Battista Anthony "Turk" Turcol
Battista Anthony Turcol, 78, passed away at his home in North Hills Thursday, December 11, 2008, after a long illness. At his bedside were his wife of 56 years, Rose Marie, and family members.
Battista, known to friends and family as "Turk," was born in Wilmington in 1930 and grew up on Union Street in Little Italy. He served as an altar boy at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church and went on to attend Salesianum High School, graduating in 1949 but remaining a dedicated follower of the school's football team and attendee of his Sallies class reunions. Battista, the proud father of eight children, owned and operated Holly Oak Liquors and Ye Olde Brandywine Tavern in Holly Oak for 35 years. He was known for his friendly manner, freshly-pressed shirts and ties and the numerous bus excursions he sponsored for his customers to Phillies games at Connie Mack Stadium. Battista temporarily closed the store in 1960 so it could be used as a campaign headquarters for John F. Kennedy. Battista continued working even while battling Multiple Sclerosis, becoming a daily profile-in-courage to his family and customers who marveled at his determination and refusal to give in to the crippling disease. M.S. finally forced his retirement in 1988. Battista loved the Jersey Shore, driving his wife and children numerous times each summer to Atlantic City and Ocean City. He was a fixture at St. Anthony's annual Italian Festival, so devoted that Battista and his daughter, Betty, would begin planning for the event weeks in advance. Battista, accompanied by one of his children, made it a point to attend every night. Battista remained as active as he could even after suffering a debilitating stroke 10 years ago. He enjoyed rides to the Shore with his children and going out to local restaurants. He maintained an avid interest in state and national politics.
Battista is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rose Marie; 1 son, Thomas, of Wilmington; and 7 daughters: Judy, Marie Luzzo, and Betty, all of Wilmington; Anne Block, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; Barbara Witterholt, of West Chester, PA; Linda, of Wlimington; and Rose McNulty, of Wilmington; and his sister, Linda Turcol, of Newark. Also surviving are his sons-in-law, Wayne Luzzo of Wilmington; Kenneth Witterholt of West Chester; Brian Block of Egg Harbor Township; and John McNulty of Wilmington; and 8 grandchildren: Nicholas and Jennifer Turcol; John McNulty III; Joseph Luzzo; Robert, Christina and Matthew Witterholt; and Ryan and Brianna Block. Battista is pre-deceased by his parents, Battista and Jenny Turcol; and 4 brothers: Charles, John, Joseph and Louis.
Battista's life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 11 am at St. Helena's Roman Catholic Church, on Philadelphia Pike in Bellefonte, where friends and family may call from 10-11 am prior to the Mass. Battista will be buried at the Cathedral cemetery in Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, Rose Marie Turcol is requesting that donations be made to the Delaware Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2 Mill Road, Suite #106, Wilmington, DE 19806.
