Harry Bright

Delaware City Firefighter and Former Councilman

Mr. Harry Bright, age 88, of Delaware City, DE, died on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Bright was a native Delawarean, born in Delaware City on October 31, 1920. A proud veteran of the US Army Air Corps, he met his beloved wife, Lorraine Moran Bright, during WWII at an airplane factory in Phoenix, AZ. Following the war and his honorable discharge, he continued to serve his country in the US Army Corps of Engineers, retiring as a derrick boat captain in 1976 after 34 years of service. Active in the Delaware City community throughout his life, Mr. Bright had been a loyal member of Delaware City Fire Company for over 70 years. He served as the president for 14 consecutive years (1949-1962)-the longest tenure in the fire company's 121-year history-and was awarded the title "President Emeritus." He was the company's chief engineer for over 10 years and had served on the board of directors. He was also a valued member of the town council during the 1960s. For his many years of dedication to the fire company and his leadership in the communty, Mr. Bright was recognized earlier this year during the Delaware City Days festivities as the town's "Outstanding Citizen." He was also to have been publicly honored by his fellow firefighters at the fire company's annual awards banquet in January. In his rare leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed all types of home improvement projects. A gifted woodworker and craftsman, as well, he created charming model lighthouses for many years. His beautifully cultivated rose garden was well-known throughout the community.

His beloved wife of 55 years, Lorraine, died in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his brother and his sister-in-law, Bernard and Marie Bright. He is survived by 2 devoted sons, Harry J. Jane Alava Manfuso Darby

A native Wilmingtonian, died in her Rockville, MD home on November 18, 2008, after a long illness.

A fascinating history precedes the Alava family. Dr. Alava was a concert pianist in the Phillipines. The piano talent found its way through several offspring over the years. The family became rooted to the Ursuline Acadamy where Dr. Alava was physician to the nuns and students. En Route to the hospital, he dropped his daughters off at the school. After graduating from Ursuline Academy and the University of Delaware, Jane became an RN and pursued this career in the DC area prior to world travel and a love of golf and skiing.
