Pittman, Mabel Virginia
Mabel Virginia Pittman, 78, of Petersburg, died Thursday July 26, 2001, at Walnut Hill Convalescent Center, Petersburg. A native of Botetourt County, she was the daughter of the late George and Gladis Caudill Leonard. She was a member of South Jefferson Street Church of Christ, Petersburg, and worked with the Southern Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Pittman.
Mrs. Pittman was survived by three daughters, Carolyn Lee Pittman, Joan Merle Pittman, both of Petersburg, and Mary Louise Dezotell and husband Kelly of Federal Way, Wa.; two sisters, Mary E. Mross, Vivian Womack and husband Jerry, all of Blue Ridge, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 2, 2001, in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, with Brother Patrick H. Sherman officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, Va. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 1, 2001, at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to District 19, Ellis Square Project.
Glass, Fern Aletha
Fern A. Glass, 91, of Colonial Heights, died on Saturday, July 28, 2001, in Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. A native of Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Myrtle Tuttle Burroughs, and the widow of Paul J. Glass. Mrs. Glass was a retired operator with Bell Atlantic. She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and choir, Colonial Heights Senior Citizens, and a former member of the Southernaires singing group and the Recycled Teenagers singing and dancing group.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn G. Crafton of Chester; two sons, Robert H. Glass of Colonial Heights, and David B. Glass of Matoaca; a sister, Arthelda Haggard of Charlotte, N.C.; ten grandchildren, Bruce S. Mann, Karen M. Sheffield, Timothy L. Glass, Tona G. Sink, Bonnie G. Falls, Robin G. Hall, Diana J. Glass, David B. Glass, Jr., Deanna G. Williams, Jason L. Glass; fifteen great-grandchildren, Kandace Mann, Brittany Mann, Corey Sheffield, Brian Sink, Joshua Glass, Christina Glass, Daniel Falls, Matthew Falls, Benjamin Hall, Sarah Hall, Samuel Hall, Dennis Williams, Philip Glass, Andrew Glass, and Maggie Glass. Mrs. Glass was predeceased by a brother, Stephen C. Burroughs.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 31, 2001, in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Interment will follow in Blandford cemetery, Petersburg. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.
McGinnis, Mela Price
Mela Price McGinnis, 94, of Chesterfield County, died on Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. Born in Burke County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Julius W. and Zula Turner Price, and the widow of Bennie McGinnis, who died in 1987. Mrs. McGinnis moved with her family to the Chase City area of Virginia when she was seven years old, and she has resided in Chesterfield the past fifty years. Mrs. McGinnis and her husband operated McGinnis Grocery in Ettrick for many years.
Mrs. McGinnis was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Verlie, John, Sarah, Chance, Tifford, Janie, and Bill. Survivors include two sisters, Vivian P. Gholson of Chase City and Myrtle P. Thompson of Chesterfield; and three brothers, Jason Price of Pelham, N.C., Jack Price of Chesterfield, and J. W. Price, Jr., of Chase City. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. McGinnis was a longtime member of Gill Grove Baptist Church, 10726 River Road, Chesterfield, where funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 1st, 2001. Reverend John Brothers will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church two hours prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Gill Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family may be contacted at the residence of her nephew, Jerry Dwayne Price, at 526-4262. Perdue, Roberta Powell
Roberta Powell Perdue, RNC, OGNP, 54 of Chesterfield County, Died on Monday, July 30, 2001 in Johnston Willis hospital, Richmond, VA. She was born in Louisa County,VA.and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield.. She received her bachelor’s degree at VCU Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing and was certified as a nurse practitioner at MCV hospital in 1977. While working at Virginia Physicians for Women, and formerly Richmond OB-GYN, Roberta was well known in the medical profession, as a teacher and a healer.
She is survived by her husband James Douglas Perdue., two daughters Robin Paige Perdue and Lauren Elizabeth Perdue. Her parents The Rev. and Mrs. R. Roland Powell of Sutherland, VA. Two sisters and brothers-in-law Patricia Powell Johnson and husband James of Sutherland, Rebecca Powell Sparrow and husband Steve, of Rockville Maryland. Two nieces Allison Leigh and Holly Lynn Johnson. Also survived by her mother in-law Elizabeth Schenck Perdue of Matoaca.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 3, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. in Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. H. Andrew Rist and the Rev. Bernard Whitlow officiating. Burial to follow in Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield. Family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Laffoon, Lucy
Lucy Bradley Laffoon, 97, formerly of Matoaca, died Thursday, August 2, 2001 in the Petersburg Home for Ladies. Born in Ettrick, she was daughter of the late William Burton Bradley and Katie Estelle Brockwell Bradley and was widow of Roy J. Laffoon. She with her husband once owned and operated Roy’s Grocery in Ettrick. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Ettrick, the Friendship Club of Ettrick and American Legion Auxilary Post 136.
She is survived by three nieces, Katie B. Gill of Williamsburg, Helen B. Hardy and Jane S. Wamsley both of Colonial Heights; a nephew, Dr. Shirley E. Clarke of Lanexa; and a sister-in-law, Gertrude Bradley of Colonial Heights.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 4, 2001 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. The Rev. James Davenport will officiate. Picardat, Philip Gibbs
Philip Gibbs Picardat, 78, of Colonial Heights, died Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Hopewell Convalescent Center. He was the son of the late John Alvin and Jessie Bass Picardat. His wife Zulma S. Picardat preceded him in death. Mr. Picardat was retired from the Roses of Picardy Motel in Colonial Heights. He was a former member of the Country Club of Petersburg and the Corvair Club of Virginia. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John Pierre Picardat and Anne E. Bloomsburg of Richmond.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 4, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Burial will be private.
Ingram, Catherine Bailey
Catherine Bailey Ingram, 68, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday August 2, 2001. Born in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Leonidas Edgar and Gladys Lee Bailey. Mrs. Ingram was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Williams and Doris Blankinship, four brothers, Alton Bailey, Douglas Bailey, Gene Bailey and William Bailey. A Beloved wife and mother, she is survived by her husband of fifty years, George Thomas Ingram Sr.; one daughter Victoria Ingram Hubert and husband Robert of Macon Georgia. Sons George (Buster) Ingram Jr. and wife Kay, Robert Ingram and wife Rickie, all of Petersburg, Johnnie Ingram and wife Terry, Kevin Ingram and wife Debbie, Kenny Ingram and wife Jo, all of Chester, Ronnie Ingram and wife Liz of Colonial Heights. Three sisters Barbara Ozmore, Lois Nunnally both of Petersburg and Beulah Wells of Prince George. She also leaves behind fourteen pricious grandchildren and three great- grandchildren to cherish her memory. A funeral service will be held on Monday August 6, 2001 at 1:30 PM in the chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights with the Rev Marshall O. Bonds officiating. Carter, Robert Paul
Robert Paul Carter, 29 of Colonial Heights, VA. Died on Monday, July 30, 2001 at his residence. Robert was born in Fort Richardson, Alaska. Robert was with the Muscular Dystrophy Association Poster Child.
He is survived by his mother Gwen Carter of Colonial Heights, a brother and sister in-law William and Monika Carter of Colonial Heights. His father and stepmother R. Paul and Ruth Ann Carter of Cortland, Ohio.

Walker, David Lee
David Lee Walker, 45 of Chesterfield County, Died on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 in Chippenham Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Walker was born in Petersburg, VA. and was a 1974 graduate of Matoaca high school. He was a self-employed general contractor, former soccer coach, enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was preceded in death by his father, Dwight M. Walker, his grandfather William Crawford Walker, his grandmother and Grandfather Eva and Jesse Hartle.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Herie Walker, four sons, David Lee Jr. and wife Michele, Justin Peter Walker, Cory William Walker and Ross Jared Walker all of Chesterfield. Three grandchildren, Samantha Walker, Colin Walker and Wyatt Walker. His mother Nancy Hartle Walker, mother and father in-law, Peter and Margaret Herie, grandmother Gertrude walker, two brothers, Mike Walker and wife Kitty of Roanoke, VA., Jeff Walker of Chester., three sisters, Jill W. and husband Steve Mitchel of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Jodie W. and husband Lance Pullano of Chester and Kim W. and husband Richard King of Chester. Also survived by nieces, nephews, two great nephews, numerous Aunts and Uncles.

Raymond Gordon Crumpler of Colonial Heights died Friday, July 27, 2001, in Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II with service in China. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lucas Crumpler; stepson, T. David Jordan of Powder Springs, Ga.; four step-grandchildren, Happy, Taylor, Laura, and Lisa; three sisters, Marjorie Paulson, Orchel Jeffers, and Doris Goodyear; several nieces and nephews. Margaret Edwards Smith, 76, of Colonial Heights, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond. She was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Lizzie Oakley Edwards. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, a retired civil service employee for Fort Lee,.and was the reigning Queen of Court at Lucy Corr Nursing Home
She is survived by her husband Emmett H. Smith, Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Emmett H. Jr. and Cindy L. Smith of Powhatan and two sisters, Pauline Culver of Richmond and Lottie Deuble of Dover, DE.

Dorothy S. Courly, 80, of Colonial Heights, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond. Born in Baltimore, Maryland she was the daughter of the late John I. Shotzberger and Alice McKenna Griffith, and the widow of George Courly. Mrs. Courly was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Richmond and also the Colonial Heights Garden Club.
She is survived by a son, Richard P. Scott, Lt. Col., US Army (Ret.) of Krumm, TX; a daughter Suzanne L. Pryse, Lt. Col., US Air Force (Ret.) of Richmond; three brothers, Dr. Martin Luthor Shotzberger of Elon College, NC, Edwin Shotzberger of Petersburg and Charles Shotzberger of Maine; a sister, Marie Lacy of Falls Church, VA; five grandchildren, David P. Scott of Dallas, TX, Sondra L. Scott of Irving, TX, Jennifer Hollingsworth of Powder Springs, GA, Douglas Tower of Los Angeles, CA and Holly Tower of Colonial Heights; and three great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She is Survived by her mother Carrie Gibbs of Colonial Heights; father James P. Mayton and his’ wife Shirley of Nashville, TN; two aunts, Margaret Lewis and Katherine Mayton; and two uncles, James H. Gibbs and Fletcher Mayton. A Funeral service will be held on Friday August 31, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in Ocran United Methodist Church, Sutherland. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Walsh, Raymond V.
Raymond V. Walsh, 86, of Colonial Heights died Tuesday, August 28, 2001at Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond. A native of Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret O’Brien Walsh. Mr. Walsh was a Ret. Lt. Col. In the U. S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife; Marie M. Walsh and daughter; Margaret Ann Grey.
He was survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond P. Walsh and wife Anne of Chesterfield and Michael L. Walsh and wife Mary of Atlanta, GA, three grandchildren; Kimberly Wilmer, Patrick Walsh and Kevin Walsh, and two great-grandchildren; Carrington Wilmer and Adam Wilmer.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, September 1, 2001 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Colonial Heights, VA 23834, with Father James Cowles officiating. Interment to follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. Family will receive friends Friday, August 31, 2001 from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. at E.
