Thelma G. Sale, 73 of Dinwiddie passed away Friday, March 30, 2001 at her residence. She was a native of Bedford County, VA and the daughter of the late Anna M. and William H. Gordon. Mrs. Sale was raised in the Methodist Church, graduated from Huddleston High School, a resident of the Petersburg area for fifty-two years and retired from C&P Telephone Co. after thirty-four years service. She also loved her yardwork and gardening. She is survived by her husband Oscar Sale, Jr., three children, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One special granddaughter to be remembered, Stephanie R. Durham. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001 in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. The Rev. Francis K. Wimmer will officiate, burial will be in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dinwiddie Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Coon, Callie Ruth
Callie Ruth Koon, 76 of Dinwiddie County, died on Monday July 23, 2001 in Waverly Health Care. She was born in Duncan S.C. and was the daughter of the late J.J. and Lidia Edge Blackwell. Mrs. Koon was a retired operator for Allied Chemical.
She is survived by her husband George A. Koon, a son Allen Lee Koon of Chester, one daughter Judith Ann Wilburn of S.C. Four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Two brothers Melvin Blackwell of Valley Falls S.C. and Jimmie Blackwell of Clifton S.C.
A funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 am in the Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights with the Rev. Carl Weaver and Mr. Jimmy Olgers officiating. Showns, Jr., John William
John William Showns Jr. a native of Mount Jackson VA, and a resident of Disputanta, died Sunday July 22, 2001 at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond. He was the son of the late John William Sr. and Evelyn Mae Campbell Showns. Mr. Showns was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, and retired from Allied Signal with over twenty-nine years as a boiler technician, he also served in the Army for fifteen years, with two tours in Korea. Mr. Showns is survived by his wife Audrey Harding Showns, three sons Steven Showns, Gregory Showns both of Disputanta, and John W. Showns III of Okinawa Japan, daughters Rosemary Quiros of Panama, Shirley Carrico of Oklahoma and Jenette Showns of California. A special grandson Stevie Showns and eight other grandchildren. Sisters Welda Baker of Mount Jackson, and Anise Booth of Buchanan. A funeral service will be held 1:30 PM on Wednesday July 25, 2001 in the chapel of E.Alvin Small Funeral Home 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights with the Rev. Raleigh Nunnally officiating. Smelley, William Heartwell
William Heartwell “Billy” Smelley 77 of Colonial Heights, VA. died on Monday, April 2, 2001 at Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. He was a native of Chesterfield. Mr. Smelley was a US Army Veteran of World War II and was a retired Car Salesman. He worked in Petersburg for Forty-seven years for Master Chevrolet, Triangle Dodge, and Connie Hack, before going into business for himself.
Mr. Smelley is survived by his wife Mary R. Smelley, two daughters Jacquelin Smelley Hall and husband Ed of Chesapeake, VA., Kim Smelley Kalvaff and husband Sam of Fairport N.Y. Five grandchildren William and Arthur Hall, Cory, Sam and Amy Kalvaff. One great grandson Noah Hall. Two sisters Mary Trexler and Loretta Wyatt, one brother John N. Harris. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 2:00P.M. at East Matoaca cemetery with the Rev. Marshall O. Bonds officiating. Orcutt, Erma B.
Erma Brown Orcutt, 88 of Colonial Heights died on Monday. July 23, 2001. She was born April 1, 1913 in Lunenburg County, VA. to Richard Lawrence and Lula Crafton Tucker. She was the widow of Charles W. Orcutt. She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and participated in all phases of the life of the church. During her years of service she was a member of the administrative board, worship, missions, kitchen, and education committees. She was a past president of the Mary Murphy Bible Class, past president of the United Methodist Women, past president of the Joy Club and member of the senior bell choir.
She is survived by a daughter Alice Brown Nelson and her husband Rev. Ben Nelson. Of Fairfax, Va., four grandsons, Mark, Jonathan, David and Lee Nelson of Fairfax., A stepson Calvin Orcutt and wife Polly, a step-daughterJoyce Learnard and husband Ralph, a step-daughter-in-law Martha Orcutt, eleven step-grandchildren, eleven step-great grandchildren and devoted nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be Thursday, July 26, 2001 at 11am in Highland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Dennis Lipke, Rev. William Rawling and Rev. Ben Nelson officiating. Williams, Gladys S.
Gladys S. Williams, 82, of Petersburg, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She was a native of Enfield, N.C. and the daughter of the late John H. and Mamie Young Olsen. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Howard Skelton and Adrian Williams. She was a retired employee for Seward Luggage Company and was a member of The First Assembly of God Church in Petersburg.
She is survived by two sisters, Essie O. Grinstead and Margaret O. Brooks, both of Petersburg, a stepson, Alton Williams of Hopewell, three step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews

Lorey, Albert Clarence
Albert Clarence Lorey, 72, of Colonial Heights, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, in John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell. A native of Streator, Illinois, he was the son of the late Albert and Letisha Kennedy Lorey, and was predeceased by a sister, Helen Miller. Mr. Lorey was a US Army/Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of American Legion Post 284, the Eagles, and the Colonial Heights Senior Golf Association. He was a retired technician with Sammons Communications Co. He is survived by his wife, Edna C. Lorey; daughter and son-in-law, Lanis and Joe Williams of Sutherland; daughter, Shirley Lorey of Chester; son, Craig Lorey of Colonial Heights; three grandsons, Matthew and Colton Williams of Sutherland, Dustin Lorey of Chester; sister, Marie Sancken of Pontiac, Ill.; brother-in-law, Donald Miller of Ottowa, Ill.; several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 17, 2001, in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. Helen Louise Jessup Archer, 88, of Colonial Heights, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001. A native of Petersburg, she was daughter of the late Eugene Henry Jessup and Sarah Ophelia Carson Jessup and the widow of Percy B. Archer, Sr. She was a retired operator with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. and was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Gloria M. Paesani of Follansbee, WV; four sons, William B. Perkinson, Jr. of Chula Vista, CA, Charles E. Perkinson of Rolla, MO, Joseph D. Perkinson of Colonial Heights and Percy B. Archer, Jr. of Dallas, TX; a brother Haywood Jessup of Dinwiddie; two sisters, Bernice Gibbs of Poquoson, VA and Mary Koeppen of Lakewood, NJ; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jenell W. Russell, 75, of Ettrick, died Saturday, July 14, 2001 in Southside Regional Medical Center. Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Berta Skinner and widow of James E. Russell, Sr. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Colonial Heights and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Ettrick.
She is survived by a son, James E. Russell, Jr. of Colonial Heights; three daughters, Linda R. Pond of Ettrick, Patricia R. Whiting and Deborah R. Andrews both of Chesterfield; three grandsons, Chris A. Pond of Colonial Heights, Michael Pond of Chesterfield and Troy Ingraham of McKenney; a granddaughter, Mendy Jo W. Gammon of Chester; six great-grandchildren, Camila M. Pond, Kendall L. Pond, Julia M. Pond, Bradly T. Gammon, Matthew C. Gammon, Patricia C. Gammon; and sister-in-law, Frances M. Skinner of Chesterfield. Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by a brother, John Roy Skinner, and grandson, James E. “Tripp” Russell III.

Amy Lucas Jefferys, 94, of Matoaca died April 21, 2001 at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond. A native of Holyoke, Mass., she was the daughter of the late John Amos and Elizabeth F. Lucas, and the widow of Silas Arthur Jefferys.
Mrs. Jefferys is survived by a daughter, Fanny J. Stewart of Matoaca; five grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren.

Jennings, Willard Randolph
Willard Randolph Jennings, 65, of Chester, died Saturday April 14, 2001 at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond. Mr. Jennings, a native of Cripple Creek, VA, was the son of the late Marvin Robert and Ollie Mae Jonas Jennings. He was an employee of Overnite Transportation and a member of the Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church of Colonial Heights.
Mr. Jennings is survived by his wife, Merle S. Jennings; a son, Christopher Jennings and spouse Tammie of Midlothian; a daughter Shannon King and spouse Brad of Chesterfield; six grandchildren, Christopher, Brandon, Stephen, Samantha, Tyler, and Seth; a brother and sister-in-law, Luther and June Jennings; three sisters, Julie Jennings, Nadine Banton, and Linda Parrish; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Jennings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Moser, James Oscar
James “Jim” Oscar Moser, 60 of Chester,VA., died on Sunday, April 15,2001 at his residence. He was born in Alcoa,TN and was the son of the late Clarence and Bonnie Marie Allen Moser. Mr. Moser was a United States Marine Veteran, and a retired Richmond Fireman (1965-1989). He was a member of Kingsland Baptist Church in Richmond, and was past president of the Flat Rock Hunt Club, Brunswick County. Mr. Moser was preceded in death by his brother Victor Moser.
He is survived by his son, Brian Moser of Midlothian, two sisters, Sylvia Chance and husband Robert of Brooksville, FL. and Margaret Heaton and husband Leslie, of Cantonment, FL. Also survived by four nephews and one niece.
A graveside service will be Wednesday 11am in Bermuda Memorial Park, Enon with the Rev.Edward Powell officiating. The funeral procession will be leaving the E. Alvin Small funeral home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights at 10:30 am Wednesday. The family will be receiving friends, Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 7:00-8:30 P.M.
Melvin, Sr., Franklin Hewette
Franklin Hewette Melvin, Sr., 92, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 in Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. He was the son of the late William Ceily Melvin and Mary Furmadge Melvin and widower of Grace Isabel Melvin. He was born in Parkersburg, NC, attended elementary school there and high school in Roseboro and Garland, NC. He was employed by Atlantic Coast Line as a telegraph operator in 1926, worked 43 years with the railroad and retired in 1973. Active in church and civic affairs, he was a member of Centenary Methodist Church in New Bern, NC, having served as Chairman of the Official Board two years. He moved to Virginia in 1960 and became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Petersburg where he served as chairman of the Official Board for three years. He was a former member and past President of the New Bern, NC Rotary Club and a former member of the Petersburg Kiwanis Club. In North Carolina he served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce and the Salvation Army.
Mr. Melvin is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Elting of Charlotte, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Franklin H., Jr. and Bettie Melvin of Colonial Heights; three grandsons, Chad Elting of Charlotte, NC, Barry Melvin and Larry Melvin both of Colonial Heights; four great-grandchildren, Kevin, Tracey, April and Whitney Melvin and a sister-in-law, Mary W. Deppe of New Bern, NC.

Fast, Edna F.
Edna F. Fast, 93, of Colonial Heights, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. A native of Grover Hill, Ohio she was the daughter of the late, Foy and Ida Clear Fruchey. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Fast. Mrs. Fast retired from the Colonial Heights school system as a teacher with thirty-three years of service. Mrs. Fast was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, the Sunshine Club at the church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the RSVP at United Way. Mrs. Fast was a member of the Southern Airres singing group.
She is survived by a son, Lowell A. Fast of Colonial Heights; two daughters, Sharon Kemp of Quinton, VA and Marlene Jester of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Violet McClure of Grover Hill, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 27, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights with the Rev. Jerry Parker officiating.
