Corine Butler Holt of Richmond, widow of Charles C. Holt Jr., died Friday, January 29, 1999. She is survived by her son, Charles C. Holt III of Richmond; two sisters, Nora Pat and Irene Heck, both of Monroe, Mich.; and one niece, Twonette Hawkins of West Chester, Pa. Mrs. Holt was a member of Patterson Avenue Baptist Church and Ruth Chapter No. 8, O.E.S. Melba L. Jones, 83, of Richmond, widow of Claude E. Margaret Randolph Marshall, 91, of Richmond, widow of J. Paige Marshall, died Friday, January 29, 1999. She is survived by her son, Henry S. Dunbar III, daughter-in-law, Doris Thompson Dunbar, and granddaughter, Margaret Randolph Dunbar, all of Richmond; and brother, Cary Gacqueline Randolph of Martinsville. Mrs. Marshall was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 1, in Hollywood Cemetery. Mrs. Dolly Dunnington Orgain, 79, retired executive secretary of Dunnington Beach Tobacco Company, Farmville, Va., died January 28, 1999. The widow of the late Francis Lee Orgain. She is survived by her son, Frances Lee Orgain, Jr. of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Jennie Orgain Every of Germantown, Tenn., Ashley Dunnington Orgain, and Francis Lee Orgain, III of Chesapeake; and a great granddaughter, Cora Lee Every. Henry W. Proffitt of Highland Springs, died Friday, January 29, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor J. Proffitt; two sons, Henry C. Proffitt, and L. Kent Proffitt, both of Highland Springs; three brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where funeral services will be held Monday, 12:30 p.m. Interment Washington Memorial Park. SMITH
Jacquelyn (Cartwright) Smith, 60, of Norfolk, Va., died Wednesday, January 27, 1999, at De Paul Hospital following a valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Dr. B.L. Smith; one brother, Stephen T. Cartwright of Richmond, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was a Tidewater native and a 1956 graduate of Great Bridge High School. A registered nurse, she worked at the Medical College of Virginia in the early '60's. Since returning to Norfolk in 1964, she actively devoted energy and leadership to many area charitable groups. Mrs. Smith was a former board member and vice president of the Friends of De Paul, president of the Norfolk Civic Ballet and the Norfolk Symphony Association Auxiliary. While with the Symphony Association, she chaired the Symphony Ball which had as honored guests, John Warner and Elizabeth Taylor. Warner, at that time, was a candidate for the United States Senate. Mrs. Smith was a president of the Norfolk Senior Center. Her most favored activity in recent years was working with the Navy League. Serving as current board member and national director for the Navy League was a great source of pleasure. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 1999, at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, located at 1146 Rodgers St., in Chesapeake. Interment will be private. Mary Josephine Stahl Southall, age 79, died Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Richmond, Va. and had lived in Savannah, Ga. for two years. She was a graduate of Richmond Professional Institute and worked for many years with the Virginia Historical Society. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth W. Southall Jr. of Savannah; son and daughter-in-law, Frank & Mary Southall of Goochland; daughter, Marilyn Southall of Savannah; nine grandchildren. Everette S. (Junie) Baldwin Jr., 79, of Chesterfield, died April 15, 1999, after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Violet H. Baldwin; two sons, Ronald W. and wife, Gwynne Baldwin and David H. Baldwin of New Orleans; a daughter, Betty Griffith of Folly Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Eric and Jason Baldwin, Leslie Drown, and Jeri Lynn Moore; three brothers, Robert, Bernard and Claude Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin was a WWII Navy veteran, a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local #10, Woodland Heights Lodge 345 and Richmond Scottish Rites. He was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he loved greeting the people on Sunday mornings with a warm welcome. Mr. Baldwin taught school at the Richmond Technical Center for 15 years. His remains rest at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. Horst Jacob (Jack) Boettcher, 79, died April 14, 1999. Born in Berlin, Germany, he was the son of Teresa Spier and Hugo Boettcher. He came to the United States in 1938. In Richmond, he was the owner of the New York Delicatessen. He was predeceased by his wife Edith Lerner Boettcher. He is survived by his wife, Dina Stern Boettcher; his son, Kenneth Boettcher; his daughter, Terry Seminara; his daughter-in- law, Jan Boettcher; his son-in-law, Rick Seminara; his half sister, Lilo Schwartz; nieces, Eve Mcgovern, and Thea Schwartz; three grandchildren, Lauren Boettcher, Ian Boettcher, and Eric Seminara; and his sister-in-law, Greta Lerner Lipton. Mr. Boettcher was a member of Beth Ahabah Congregation, Jefferson Lakeside Country Club, and Westwood Tennis Club. Funeral Services will be Sun day at 2 p.m. at Beth Ahabah Synagogue, 1111 W. Franklin Street, with burial at Hebrew Cemetery. His wife and family will receive friends at 200 Overlook Road. Howard Hart Bohannon, 79, widower of Emma Bohannon, died April 15, 1999, at his residence in Red Oak, Va. He is survived by two daughters, Mary B. Newton of Chase City and Lillie B. Allgood of Powhatan; two sons, Howard Bohannon of Richmond and Jerry Bohannon of Alton; one brother, Tom Bohannon of Chase City; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Pauline Parham Clarke, 76, of Richmond, died April 14, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl (Snookie) Clarke and her son, David (Pepsi) Clarke. She is survived by a daughter, Judy Bruce; a son, Kenneth Clarke; two sisters, Gaynelle Brown and her husband, Elmer, Dona Thompson and her husband, Gaylord (Skip); three grandchildren, Michele Lamphere, Torie and Jodi Clarke; a daughter-in-law, Pam; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Clarke retired from Life of Virginia after 25 years of service, and she was a member of Hardy Central Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Jean Van Duyne Conant, age 76, of Burkeville, died Friday, April 16, 1999. She is survived by her husband, James Earl Conant; one daughter, Pamela Jean Conant of Burkeville; two sons, James V.H. Conant of Midlothian and John B. (Thumper) Conant of Burkeville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Conant was a member of the Burkeville Baptist Church and was retired from the Restaurant and Grocery Business.
