MOON
Cary Nelson Moon Jr., son of the late Cary Nelson Moon and Florence Few Moon, died Monday, May 19, 1997. He was born in Scottsville, Va. at Shirland Farm and was educated in the county schools. Dr. Moon is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Dear Moon and by his children, Mary M. Holladay and Douglas S. Holladay of Atlanta, Ga., Ridie M. Otey and David Otey of Williamsburg, Cary N. Moon III and Leigh G. Moon of Charlottesville, Richard D. Moon and Elizabeth Y. Moon of Mooresville, N.C., James B. Moon and Sharon M. Moon of Richmond, and Page W. Moon and Elizabeth C. Moon of Alexandria; and by ten grandchildren. Dr. Moon was a graduate of the University of Virginia College of Arts and Sciences and of the Medical School. He served as a lieutenant in the US Navy during World War II. Dr. Moon practiced medicine as an ear, nose and throat specialist in Charlottesville for over 40 years. Dr. Moon was active in many professional organizations. He served as President of the Albemarle County Medical Society, of the Virginia Society of Opthamology and Otolaryngology, and of the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otolaryngological Society. He was Secretary of the American Otological Society and Vice-President and Chairman of the Southern Section of the Triological Society. Dr. Moon was a clinical professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Virginia Medical School and at one time chaired the Medical Alumni Advisory Committee. Dr. Moon served as Chairman of the Medical Staff of the Martha Jefferson Hospital and President of its Board of Trustees. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 21 at the Christ Church Glendower at 11 a.m. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the Deafness Research Foundation, 55 East 34th Street, New York, N.Y. 10016 or to the Martha Jefferson Hospital Building Fund. Willard "Bob" Raymond Nolan Sr., 90 of Richmond, died May 16, 1997. Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of Albert C. Nolan and Carlotta Hodnett Nolan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Shipp Nolan. He retired in 1970 from the American Tobacco Co. after 42 years of service and was a life member of Westover Baptist Church. Surviving are his sons, Richard R. Nolan of Allentown, Pa. and Willard R. Nolan Jr. of Richmond; and granddaughter, Kimberly A. Nolan of Allentown, Pa. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd. where the family will receive friends Tuesday 7 to 9 p.m. and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 1997 with the Rev. Robert J. Riach, 75, of Minneapolis, formerly of Falls Church. SAVEDGE
Mabel Seward Savedge of Suffolk died May 19, 1997. A native of Surry County, she was a daughter of the late George and Lelia Seward and the widow of Henry Scott Savedge. Mrs. Savedge was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, a devoted Sunday School teacher until her death and a member of the Annette Hall Missionary Circle. She completed studies at State Teachers College in Farmville and taught school in Hope well until her marriage in 1930. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Ann S. and Robert L. Herring of Suffolk; a son and his wife, Henry S. Jr. and Anne G. Savedge of Richmond; five grandchildren, J. Scott and H. Kent Savedge, Leigh Ann H. Creson, Sarah Evelyn Savedge and Jill H. Queen. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, N. Main Street, by the Rev. Charles W. Thompson with burial at Moore's Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Elberon. Joyce Wade Steele, 46, of Colonial Heights died Saturday, May 17, 1997 at her residence. She was born in Lawrence, Kansas and was an employee of Estes Express for 23 years. She was a member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chesterfield Chapter 139, Richmond. She is survived by her husband James D. Steele Jr.; six children, Joseph Michael Wilson of Hanover, Sherri W. Eubank of Chesterfield, Amy Marie Wilson of Petersburg, Shawn Elizabeth Day and Tamara E. Steele, both of Chesterfield and James D. Steele III of Dinwiddie; seven grandchildren; parents, Jack F. and Helen H. Wade; sister, Louise Wade and brother, Jack F. Wade Jr., all of Richmond. Joseph A. Sweeney, 77, of Richmond, died Monday, May 19, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Betty D. Sweeney; his daughter and son-in-law, Susan Sweeney and Charles K. Watts; and his son and daughter-in- law, Joseph Patrick and Polly F. Sweeney; three granddaughters, Jennifer Grace Sweeney, Elizabeth Downing Sweeney and Victoria Caroline Sweeney; seven brothers and sisters, Wilson Sweeney, Barbara S. Hicks, Robert F. Sweeney, Donald E. Sweeney, Joyce S. Campbell, Albert R. Sweeney and Edward L. Sweeney. Mr. Sweeney was a retired lumber yard foreman with Miller Manufacturing. THOMAS
Col. Robert L. Thomas, USA Ret., 78, of Williamsburg died Friday May 16, 1997 at his home. Born in Oxford, Pa., Col. Thomas, a graduate of the University of Nebraska, entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and served in WWII in campaigns in Africa, Italy and France; he later served in Indochina and Vietnam. A highly decorated officer, he was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal, the Legion of Honor and the Vietnam Service Medal. After his military retirement, he worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation as a field engineer. He was honored as a Kentucky Colonel and was a member of St. Bede's Catholic Church and the Retired Officer's Association. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Christianne Legras Thomas; five sons, Robert A. Thomas of St. Louis, Mo., William G. Thomas of Richmond, Va., Marc A. Thomas of Ladysmith, Va., Pierre R. Thomas of Bellingham, Wash. and Paul R. Thomas of Manassas, Va.; a brother, John Thomas of Oxford, Pa.; two sisters, Margaret Wolfe of Westchester, Pa. and Ann Tice of Oxford, Pa.; and nine grandchildren. Phillip Carlton "Tarzan" Vaughan, 67, of Chester, died Monday, May 19, 1997 at his residence. A native of Colonial Heights, he was the son of the late Joseph Lewis and Inez Simmons Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan was retired after forty years as a highway design engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Southside. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; daughter, Wanda Vaughan Harris of Chester; grandsons, Phillip C. Harris of Colonial Heights, David L. Harris of Chester; brothers, John L. Vaughan of Chesapeake, William E. Vaughan of Colonial Heights; sister, Lois V. Brown of Colonial Heights, numerous nieces and nephews. Joseph E. Walton Sr., 69, of Richmond, passed away May 19, 1997. He was a retired employee of R.F.&P. Railroad and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mildred Landes Walton; mother-in-law, Laura Armstrong of Richmond; two children, Joseph E. Walton Jr. and his wife, Sue Walton of Mechanicsville, and Carolyn Irby and her husband Lee S. Wilmo Adkins, 80 years, of Charles City, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 1, 1999. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his loving wife, Ruth; three daughters, Mattie Turner, Fran Baker, Rita Douglas and her husband, Joe; two sons, Ralph Adkins and his wife, Muriel and Farley Adkins; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; three sisters; and five brothers. Richard W. Boisseau, age 82, of Lancaster, died Sunday, January 31, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lee Higgins Boisseau; a son, Richard W. Boisseau, III of Lancaster, Va.; three daughters, Barbara B. Peace, Macon, Ga., Gayle B. Summa, Richmond, Va. and Martha B. Mattheisen, Williamsburg, Va.; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Boisseau was born in Petersburg, Va. and attended Petersburg High School. He was active in sports and inducted into the All State Southern High School Football League. He attended Washington & Lee University and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of Washington & Lee. After graduation, he served on the Board of the American Automobile Association of Virginia, the former Bank of Virginia and the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges. Mr. Boisseau retired as the Director of the Appomattox Basin Industrial De velopment Corporation. Lillie Headley Boyle, 83, of Farnham, died January 31, 1999. Surviving are a son, R. Mervin Boyle Jr. and wife Nancy L.; a daughter, Nancy B. Jones, grandchildren Donna B. Sarah Calvert Bruce, age 19, died Sunday, January 31, 1999, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, after a long and gallant battle with leukemia. Sarah was born in Richmond, and lived with her family in Midlothian. She graduated last June from Midlothian High School, where she was active in the Drama Club. Sarah was also a puppeteer, helping to present performances at many libraries in the area. Sarah is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas Bruce; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bruce Jr. of Williamsburg; her sister, Meredith Bruce; and brother, Alex Bruce. She is also survived by aunts and uncles, Linda and Noah Palmer of Williamsburg, Patty and Thomas Holland of Virginia Beach; and cousins, Noah, Jack and Elizabeth Palmer, and Tommy and Brian Holland. Sarah would have entered Mary Washington College last fall had her illness not reoccurred. Her dream was to be a child psychologist working with children who had long term illnesses. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Dale Memorial Park.
