SYKES
Doris Howerton Sykes of Midlothian, Va., passed away peacefully at her home October 2, 1999. She was born January 11, 1925 in Hillsborough, N.C., a daughter of the late Mather S. and Lillian W. Howerton. Doris was preceded in death by sisters, Lillian Tyson of Hillsborough, N.C., and Carol Basile of Hopewell, Va. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, William A. Sykes of Midlothian, Va.; two sons, William A. Sykes Jr. and wife, Cathy of High Point, N.C., and Roth Z. Sykes and wife, Wendy of Bon Air, Va.; three daughters, Suzanne S. Merritt of the home, Amy Gilkerson and husband, Greg of Mt. Crawford, Va., and Beth Williams and husband, Robert of Mechanicsville, Va. Doris has eight grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Other survivors are brothers, James Thomas and Richard Howerton of Durham, N.C., Fred Howerton of Raleigh, N.C., and Steve Howerton of Eden Prairie, Minn.; sisters, Myrna Nicol and Nancy Dixon of Durham, N.C., Linda Kellis of Cary, N.C., and their spouses; a devoted sister-in-law, Elleanor Pope and husband, Rainey of Burlington, N.C.; brother-in-law, Zaner L. Sykes of Mebane, N.C.; brother-in-law, Grover P. Sykes and wife, Georgia of Atlanta, Ga.; and brother-in-law, Jeffrey Basile of Hopewell, Va. Doris resided in Mebane, N.C. for 18 years, a portion of that time employed as a secretary of the Mebane United Methodist Church. Following her husband’s career, she also resided in Cumberland, Md., Newport News and Roanoke, Va. She was an active member of her church wherever she lived. More recently, she was a member of Bon Air United Methodist Church, where she was a past president of the United Methodist Women, a circle leader, past president of the Blanchette Brown Sunday School class and past member of the administrative board. She was formerly active in the Windsor Forest Community Association and the Garden Club. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, October 4, 1999, and where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, by the Rev. Douglas Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia, Va. Helen Wilkinson Tucker of Richmond, died Saturday, October 2, 1999. She is survived by her husband, John Randolph Tucker Jr.; two sons, John Randolph Tucker III and Carter Harrison Tucker and his wife, Margaret Brooks Tucker; two grandchildren, Carter Harrison Tucker Jr. and Margaret Randolph Tucker. Mrs. Camille Jackson Dabney Wickham, age 90, of Richmond, Va., widow of Nathaniel John Wickham Jr., went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 1, 1999. She is survived by three sons, Nathaniel John Wickham III and his wife, Diana Wood Wickham of Richmond, Roger Franklin Wickham of Richmond and Landon Hunter Wickham and his wife, Celia Scott Wickham of New York City; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives and friends. Doris Marshall Williamson, 88, of Richmond, widow of James C. Williamson Sr., died October 3, 1999. She is survived by three sons, James C. Williamson Jr. of North Carolina, Robert E. Williamson Sr. (Frances) of Chester, and Philip W. Williamson (Sylvia) of Midlothian; and daughter-in-law, Jean S. Williamson of Richmond; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. Mrs. Williamson was a long time member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, former member of Southside Baptist Church and active in the Oak Grove Senior Citizens. Her remains rest at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. WOOD
Clarence H. Wood Jr., 79, of Chesterfield, died October 3, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Archie H. Wood; daughter, Virginia Sublette Davis of Varina; sons, Lynn B. Wood of Cary, N.C. and C. Henry Wood III of Chesterfield; sisters, Virginia Hite and Eva Ellis, both of Petersburg, Peggy Anderson of Charlotte, N.C.; brothers, Hilton Wood of Oxford, N.C. and Thomas "Pete" Wood of Halifax, Va.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Wood was a tech sergeant with the 351st Bombardment Squadron, 100th Bombardment Group in the 8th Army Air Force, where he flew over the European Theater during WWII. On his 28th combat mission, his plane was brought down and he spent the last year of the war as a POW. While serving his county, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart. A graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the Bermuda Memorial Park. Morrissett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
ANDERSON
Robert T. Anderson, 77, died Saturday, October 30, 1999 in Richmond. He was born in Washington, D.C., the son of the late William Edwin and Ella Wright Anderson. He moved to Petersburg in 1958, where he and his wife, Helena B. Anderson lived until her death in 1975. Mr. Anderson was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Petersburg. He retired from AT&T after thirty-eight years of service and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, where he met his present wife, Louise Miller Anderson. After retiring, he enjoyed performing as "Homer" the clown. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Sally A. Coleman and husband, Ed of Richmond, Patricia A. Bernshausen of Surry, and William R. Anderson and wife, Meg of Powhatan; six grandchildren, Sarah and Conor Coleman, Dana, Andrew, Daniel, and David Bernshausen; and a brother, Thomas L. Anderson of Mt. Airy, Md. Funeral services at 3 p.m., Tuesday, November 2, 1999 at First Baptist Church, Petersburg. Interment at Southlawn Memorial Park. BERKELEY
Archie Campbell Berkeley, 90, a retired attorney of Richmond, died October 31, 1999. He was the son of the late Richard Ferrell Berkeley and Sallie Scott Berkeley. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1930 and from the T.C. Williams School of Law in 1933. Mr. Berkeley, a member of the Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Associations, was in the general practice of law in Richmond for over 60 years, retiring in 1996. From boyhood, Mr. Berkeley was an active Eagle Scout and a former member of the Executive Committee of Robert E. Lee Council Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Berkeley, a dedicated churchman, was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, serving for many years as warden and trustee. He was a former chairman of the Episcopal Parish Council of Richmond. Fraternally, he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma and Delta Theta Phi. In the 1980’s, he served as president of the Boatwright Society of the University of Richmond. As a member of the City Democratic Committee from 1940 to 1954, he was secretary of the Virginia Delegation to the 1948 National Democratic Convention. Mr. Berkeley is survived by his wife, the former Jeanette Haydon of Irvington; and by his children, Archie Campbell Berkeley Jr. of Richmond, Thomas Haydon Berkeley of Lynchburg, Sallie Berkeley Wendt of Richmond, and Jane Berkeley Barton of Fairfax. Also surviving him are his grandchildren, Philip Campbell Wendt, Boyd Landon Wendt, James Ross Barton Jr., Lucy Elizabeth Harding, A. Campbell Berkeley III, Catherine Carter Berkeley, Robert Matthew Dumas, James Scott Berkeley, Seth Keller Berkeley, and Alyssa Haydon Berkeley. He is also survived by four great-grandsons, Ross Berkeley Barton, John Charles Barton, Scott Salter Harding, and Samuel Berkeley Harding. Nellie J. Carlton, age 92, of Richmond, died Friday, October 29, 1999. She was the widow of William S. Miles Sr. and Roland T. Carlton, and is survived by her son, William S. Miles Jr.; three stepchildren, Marian C. Skinner, Virginia C. Chapman, and Marjorie C. Goode; two sisters, Josephine Burkett and Ellen Wilcox of Massachusetts; three brothers, Wirt A., Stuart M., and Vernon a. Jones. Mrs. Carlton was a long-time member of Aldersgates United Methodist Church. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 7 p.m. Monday. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery. CLEMENTS
Lillie B. Clements of Carson, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 1999 at Greensville Memorial Hospital, Emporia. A native of Athens, Ga., she was the daughter of the late, William Franklin and Annie Bell Elder Pittard. Mrs. Clements received a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Georgia and a Masters Degree in Education from The College of William and Mary. She was a retired educator, the Vice Chairperson of the United Methodist Family Services, and a member of Carson United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, chairperson of various committees, and choir director for thirty years. Surviving are her husband, John Halligan Clements of Carson; four children, Paul B. Clements and wife, Patricia of Chesterfield, Martha Carrington Clements of Carson, John Peter Clements and wife, Jennifer of Carson, and Kimberly Anne Clements of Midlothian; three grandchildren, John William, James Halligan and John Christopher; two brothers, Lamar Pittard and wife, Hazel and George Pittard and wife, Jean. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 2, 1 p.m. at Carson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael P. Kendall officiating. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery. Jack Conklin, 78, of Richmond, formerly of Greenwood Lake, N.Y., died October 29, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Lynagh Conklin; daughters, Gayle Brown and her husband, Jim of Richmond, Nancy Krugh and her husband, Bill of Clarion, Pa.; also three grandchildren. Lillian Clements Dean of Williamsburg, Va., died Saturday, October 30, 1999. Mrs. Dean was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Ronnie C. Demery, age 55, of Richmond, died Sunday, October 31, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Jane M. Demery; three stepchildren, Tammie Kennedy, Joshua and Jessica Willis; one grandson, Dylan Kennedy; two sons, Kevin Demery and Walter Dushibell; three sisters; one brother; and his mother, Mrs. Morrison. GRANDLE
James Arthur Grandle, 76, of 415 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, died Saturday afternoon, October 30, 1999, at his home. He had not been in good health for several years. Mr. Grandle was born on February 28, 1923 in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Frances Knootz Grandle Simms and William Franklin Grandle. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Julia N. (Judy) Blosser Grandle; and three sons, J. Arthur Grandle, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Robert E. Grandle, Hampton, Va.; and Christopher O. Grandle, Stuarts Draft, Va. He is also survived by two grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a niece; and six nephews. He lived and worked in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County most of his life. After graduation from Harrisonburg High School, and prior to entering the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was employed by the Mick or Mack and the Harrisonburg Telephone Company. Following discharge from the service, he worked for the Harrisonburg Telephone Company, the City Produce Exchange, and the Heatwole Hatchery. He was co-owner of Lacey Springs Farms/Westdale Hatchery until his retirement in June, 1999. Mr. Grandle was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, the Harrisonburg Lions Club and the Elks Lodge. There will be a private burial. A memorial service will be held at the Otterbein United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 2, at 8 p.m. The Rev. Glenn Langston and Rev. Don Fridinger will lead the worship service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to either Otterbein United Methodist Church or the RMH Hospice Unit. The family will welcome friends at the Grandle residence at any time from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
GREEN
Allen Artis Green, died Saturday, October 30, 1999 following surgery at Chippenham Hospital, Richmond, Va. He was born in 1908 in Randolph County, Ala. He served in the South Pacific during WW II as a member of the Navy’s 37th "Seabee" Battalion. At the time of his retirement in 1979, he was manager of the Baptist Hospital Laundry Services in Jacksonville, Fla. His wife, Victoria Morgan Green preceded him in death in 1989. He is survived by a sister, Flodie Haynie of Hapeville, Ga.; daughters, Myra Kight of Richmond, Eleanor Mann of Dunwoody, Ga., Betty Joyce Purcell of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a son, Billy Allen Green of Longwood, Fla.; a nephew, J.C. Haynes Jr. of Union City, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 3, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 7521 Turf Ln. Interment will take place in Jacksonville, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Philharmonics.
GREENE
Vernon Bradley Greene, 66, of Richmond, went to his rest October 31, 1999. Born in Churchland, N.C., where he will be interned in the Churchland Baptist Church Graveyard alongside his parents, Stokes W. and Leona Greene and other relatives. He is survived by his wife, Linda; and brothers, Edward F. of Wilkesboro, James N. of Moravia, N.Y., Gordon L. of Winston Salem, N.C.; and a sister, Evelyn G. Arndt of Hickory, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He came to Richmond with Lowe’s Company in 1959 and was manager of the 4502 W. Broad Street store from 1970 until his retirement in 1987. Prior to coming to Richmond, he served in the U.S. Army for two years and during his tour of duty was one of the observers of the Yacco Flats, Nev., atomic blast in August, 1957. After retiring from Lowe’s, he founded his own business, Vernon Greene, Inc. and remained active in that firm until his death. He was a former member of the Jaycees and an active member of the West Richmond Businessmans Association, the Presidents and Managers Club, the Lodge of Strict Observance #207, AF&AM, and the Hermitage Country Club. He had many interests, including, traveling and meeting and making new friends. He has stayed in touch with many of these friends who are located throughout the world. His remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 3. Hazelrigs and his wife, Mildred H. Adlene C. Johnson of Montpelier, the widow of Derwood Johnson, departed this life October 28, 1999. She was a 1942 graduate of Maggie L. Walker High School and a 1982 retiree of the Federal Reserve Bank where she was employed for over 25 years. She is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Wise, Diann Shackleford and Felecia Johnson; three grandsons, Aaron Shackleford, Marlking Peay and Lamont Berkeley; brother, Johnnie Caldwell; sister, Jessie Robinson; seven sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
