Margaret Whitfield Cotton, 79, of Franklin, Va., died October 2, 1999 at Southampton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was a daughter of the late Samuel Eley and Clara Drake Whitfield of Southampton County and was educated at Longwood (Farmville) College. She was a member of Franklin Baptist Church and the Lottie Moon Circle of the Women’s Missionary Union, Kings Servants’ Sunday School Class, Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, The Franklin Woman’s Club, the Suffolk Chapter of the Longwood Alumni Association, Southampton County Historical Society, the Franklin Christian Woman’s Club, the Walter Cecil Rawls Museum of Arts, a charter member of the Jerusalem Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and a member of the Southampton Area Literary Council. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Robert Howard Cotton Sr.; two sons, Robert Howard Cotton Jr. and Samuel Cobb Cotton, both of Coinjock, N.C.; one daughter, Suzanne Cotton Councill of Richmond; one sister, Virginia W. Allen of Wilmington, Del.; and one brother, Joseph D. Whitfield of Suffolk; three grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Poplar Spring Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Roy DeBrand officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the American Legion, Charles R. Pauline Carpenter Hurt of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, October 3, 1999. She was a member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church and was a retired nurse with Virginia Home. George P. Mitchell, age 76, of Richmond, died Saturday, October 2, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty M. Mitchell; and his children, Patricia L. Mitchell and Gregory P. Mitchell and his wife, Marla; one granddaughter, Megan Mitchell; one sister, Jane Kellum. Mr. Mitchell retired from C&P with 30 years of service and was an Army veteran of WW II. Robert L. Morris Sr., age 89, of Drakes Branch, formerly of Norfolk, died October 3, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ida Ruth Norman Morris; two daughters, Ruth Ash of St. Louis, Mo., and Judy Williams of Arcadia, Fla.; two sons, Robert L. Morris Jr. of Suffolk, and James E. Morris II of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Eva May Morris Gregory of Norfolk and Artis Emanuelson of Virginia Beach; one brother, James E. Morris of Norfolk; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Farwell Mayer and Eva May Gilbert Morris. Mr. Morris was a retired self employed grocer associated with D.P. Pender, Bazemore, Morris Food and Ocean Park Markets. He was a member of Drakes Branch Baptist Church and a charter member and Deacon of Fox Hall Baptist Church, Norfolk. He was past president of Charlotte County Ruritan Club, Treasurer of Ocean Park Vol. Fire Dept., Coast Guard Auxiliary WW II, 60 year Mason Corinthian and Naomi Lodges and Tidewater Area 10 Pin Leagues. Evangeline I. (Linkie) Murphy, 76, of Quinton, Va., died October 2, 1999. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kathy; and great-grandson, George. She is survived by her son, Arthur Gordon Ledbetter Sr. of Quinton; daughter, Lynne Murphy Neese of Abingdon; brother, John R. Baker of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Faye, Arthur Jr. and Robert; also three great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Summer and Trey. Mrs. Murphy was retired from Aetna Insurance Co. after 38 years of service and from CNA Insurance Co. after eight years of service. After her retirement she had worked with the New Kent Literacy Council. She was a member of Providence Forge Presbyterian Church. SISSON
Lambert Langston Sisson, of Montross, Va., died on October 2, 1999 of heart failure and the complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was the beloved husband of Velma Beauchamp Sisson for 60 years; the father of Carolyn Sisson Packett; grandfather of Marion James Packett III and Curtis Lambert Packett; brother of Hannah Evelyn Sisson Bowen. Other family members included a son-in-law, Marion J. Packett; and a granddaughter-in-law, Kristy Crow Packett, wife of Marion James Packett III, all of Warsaw, Va. Lambert Sisson was born at Templeman, Va. on August 23, 1914, the seventh of eleven children born to Willie Norwood Branson Sisson and George Ashby Sisson. He was a sower and tiller of the earth from a very young age and became a very successful farmer and businessman. Lambert was devoted to his church and a life long member of Lebanon United Methodist. He served as Trustee and was Treasurer for over 23 years. He was a member of the Montross Landman and Warsaw Bauman Masonic Lodges, the Emily B. Chinn Chapter of the Eastern Star, and the Ruritan, being a member of each organization for over 50 years. He will long be remembered by his friends and family as a man graceful in person, grand of statute, and mild of temperament. He was indeed the "full grain in the ear", ready to be harvested by the Hand Divine. She is survived by two sons, Floyd Franklin Smith Sr. and Wayne Ray Smith; a brother, Waverly Merridew; a daughter-in-law, Beverley Ann Smith; five grandchildren, Tyler Dodson, Floyd Jr., Robin, Darryl, and Dean Smith; six great-grandchildren, Robby Tyler Dodson, Matthew, Christopher, John Forrest, Skylar Grant, and Hunter Reed Smith. Mrs. Smith was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Mrs. Edith Perkinson Smith, age 86, died Sunday, October 3, 1999 in Waverly, Va. She is survived by one son, Felton E. (Billy) Reeks of Petersburg, Va.; one brother, Lawrence W. (Buster) Perkinson of La Crosse, Va.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Smith was a retired school teacher of the Mecklenburg County Public School System and a member of La Crosse United Methodist Church.
