McGUIRE
Mr. Thomas (Buddy) McGuire, 75, of Midlothian, died May 15, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Mary Arline Wray McGuire; his daughter, Pamela McGuire Womack and her husband, Ronald Lee; two grandchildren, Christine C. Downs Copa and her husband Mark, and Hillary Tripp Womack; several nieces and nephews. Mr. McGuire was a WWII paratrooper and a retired control equipment supervisor at E.I. Dupont and an avid golfer. He was a member of the James River Woodcarvers Association and the Chesterfield Historical Society. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chester Baptist Church where he was a member and former deacon. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Chester Baptist Church New Building Fund, 4317 W. School St., P.O. Box 356, Chesterfield, Va. 23831. Bliley Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel in charge of arrangements.

MITCHELL
Viola Norwood Mitchell died May 17, 1997, the widow of Willie Pershing Mitchell and a member of Zion Baptist Church. She is survived by one brother, J. Wardell Norwood of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; four nephews, Graham Norwood, Richmond, Michael Norwood, Charlie Norwood and Randy Norwood, all of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; several grand-nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Echols Funeral Home, Emporia, with burial in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Zion Baptist Church.

MURPHY
Mrs. Margaret Murphy, 80, of Midlothian, died May 15, 1997. She is survived by her son and daughter-in- law, Kenneth E. and Gail K. Sudol; her brother, William Groves of Dayton, Ohio; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bliley Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dale Memorial Park.

PRESTON
A service of witness to the resurrection was held for Miss Ellinor G. Preston at her family cemetery in Seven Mile Ford, Virginia, on March 15, 1997. Miss Preston, who died on March 13th after a long illness, had made Richmond her home since 1934. The daughter of Rev. Cochran Preston, a Presbyterian minister, and Mrs. Virginia G. Preston, she graduated from Randolph- Macon Woman's College and received an additional degree in Library Science from the University of North Carolina. She taught at the high school and college level, was a librarian at four Richmond schools, became Supervisor of the WPA State Wide Library Project, and ended her formal career by serving as Supervisor of Libraries for the Richmond School system for 23 years. Ellinor Preston was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as the State Executive Secretary of the Virginia Iota State Organization for many years. She was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and president of the Quota Club of Richmond, the Virginia Library Association, and the School Libraries Section, Virginia Education Association, and a member of many other educational and professional organizations. She was the author of nine published articles and four unpublished works used in the Richmond Public Schools. Miss Preston is survived by her brother, Dr. John M. Preston of Columbia, S.C.; by three nephews, John M. Preston of Knoxville, Tenn., Charles D. Preston of Augusta, Ga., and Les D. Preston of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and by six great-nieces and nephews; and by one great-great-niece. The famiy requests that any memorials be sent to The Headquarters Fund, Virginia Iota State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma, 1605 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227.

ROBINSON
Departed this life May 17, 1997, Mrs. Florence Ophelia Robinson of Hadensville, Va. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland. Funeral notice later.

ROYSTER
William Elliott Royster of Victoria, Virginia, died Friday, May 16, 1997. He was the widower of Annie Hubbard Royster and is survived by three daughters, Gwendolyn Garnett, Mary Lambert, and Susan Dewey, all of the Richmond area; three sisters, Josephine Barnes, Sadie Terry, and Sybil Zava; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Christopher Dewey. Mr. Royster was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II, and a re tired farmer. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday (today). Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Lakeview Cemetery, Victoria, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Johns Foundation at Johnston-Willis Hospital, Richmond.

SIMMS
Hattie Spurlock Simms entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 14, 1997. She is survived by her devoted husband, Conrad Simms Sr.; two devoted daughters, Sheila S. Thomas and Charlene Simms; devoted son, Conrad Simms Jr.; two sisters, devoted Marie McMillan and Sylvia Gaines; three brothers, Ellerson, John and Theodore Spurlock; four grandchildren, Eugene Thomas Jr., Gabrielle, Alexis and Chandler Simms; son-in-law, Eugene Thomas Sr.; daughter-in-law, Esther Hyatt- Simms; uncle, John Armstrong; four aunts, among them, Mrs. Minnie Howlett; one brother-in-law; five sisters-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends, among them devoted, Sarah Fenner. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 19, 1997 at 12 Noon at Union Baptist Church, 1813 Everette Street, Rev. Robert C. Davis, Pastor officiating. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Remains will rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., until Monday 10:30 a.m., after which will rest in the above-named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church Monday 11:30 a.m.

SLOOPE
Billy W. Sloope Sr., age 73, of Richmond, died May 14, 1997. survived by wife, Anne Cary Sloope; two sons, B. Warren Sloope Jr. and daughter-in-law Marykay Sloope; Terry W. Sloope and daughter-in-law Pamela Sloope of Cartersville, Ga.; grandson, Zachary Tyler Sloope; two brothers, Guy L. Sloope of Waynesbora, Va. and Chester Sloope of Richmond; a sister, Mrs. A. K. Everett of Sneads Ferry, N.C. Mr. Sloope was a member of Welborne United Methodist Church, a retired professor of physics at VCU and was a Veteran of World War II Army Airforce. Family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Parham Chappel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Welbourne United Methodist Church. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions can be made to Welbourne Unit ed Methodist Church or favorite charity of choice.

SMITH
Deaconess Elvira Curtis Smith, of Richmond, peacefully departed this life for her eternal resting place on Wednesday, May 14, 1997. She is survived by her partner in life, of 63 years, Deacon Aaron J. Smith Sr. Also left to mourn her loss are five sons, Deacon Aaron J. Jr., Joseph, Reverend Lawrence V., Jerry and Morgan Smith; four daughters, Mary Smith Langley, Margaret Smith, Harriet Matthews and Lora Scales; two daughters-in-law, Mary and Deaconess Celestine Smith; two sons -in-law, James Ray Langley Sr. and Monte Scales; forty-one grandchildren; one hundred plus great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Deacon Spencer Curtis; one brother-in-law, Edmon Smith; three sisters-in-law, Martha Brown, Pearle and Lucille Curtis; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. After 11 a.m. Monday remains will rest in Sharon Baptist Church, 1st and Leigh Sts., where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Reverend Paul Coles officiating. Interment St. James Baptist Church Cemetery, Coatesville, Va.

SMITH
Mrs. Lois V. Smith, of Richmond, died May 17, 1997. Memorial services will be announced. Arrangements by Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd.

STONEMAN
Eloise Sclater Stoneman, 92, died Friday, May 16, 1997 in Midlothian, Va. at Brandermill Woods Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 45 years, Louis H. Stoneman Jr. Mrs. Stone man taught for 47 years in the Fluvanna County Public Schools. She was a lifelong member of Fork Union Baptist Church where she was active in the W.M.U.; a member of the D.A.R. and the Fluvanna County Historical Society. She is survived by a sister, Mary S. Guess; a sister-in-law, Ann Sclater; two nephews and their wives, Randolph and Linda Blain and David and Kathy Blain; two nieces and their husbands, Judith Blain and Garnett Kennedy and Sarah Sclater Bremer; five great-nephews and five great-nieces. The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Sheridan Funeral Home in Kents Store, Va. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Fork Union Memorial Cemetery on Route 15.

TAYLOR
Departed this life Friday, May 16, 1997 Mrs. Corrine Taylor of Noble Ave. She is survived by her daughter, Georgia Thweatt-Johnson; two sons, Robert W. and David Taylor; four grandchildren; twelve great-grand children; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 21, 1 p.m. Interment in Riverview Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the funeral home, Wednesday, 12:30 p.m.

TAYLOR
Frances Frost Compton Taylor, 81, of Richmond, died May 17, 1997. She is survived by her children, Barbara C. Pitts of Austin, Texas, Frances C. Smith and Margaret C. Waymack, both of Richmond, and the Rev. James E. Compton of Bedford; brothers, Russell B. Frost Jr. of Newport News and William J. Frost of Richmond; sister, Irene Margaret Kindervater of Richmond; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Northside Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. A grave side service will be held 11 a.m. Mon day in Riverview Cemetery.

THOMPSON
Lois Bowman Thompson, 66, of Chester, widow of William H. Thompson, died Friday, May 16, 1997. She is survived by a son and daughter-in- law, Michael Ritchie and Katherine Thompson; a grandson, Jonathan Michael Thompson; her mother, Pearl Betts; a brother, Julian Walter Bowman. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Courthouse Rd. and Petersburg Seventh Day Adventist Churches. the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Sunset Memorial Park. Mrs. Thompson's contributions to the Lord's work will be remembered throughout the community.

TINSLEY
Mrs. Gaynelle Hermie Tinsley, 82, of Richmond, died May 16, 1997. She was the widow of William K. Tinsley and is survived by many loved ones and friends. Visitation will be Sunday 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. Funeral services will be held Monday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Officiated by her devoted pastor, Rev. Joe Carson. Interment Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Fairmont United Methodist Church.

UPCHURCH
Vernice Upchurch, 85, of Richmond, died Thursday, May 15, 1997. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Narron; one grandson, Thomas Narron; two great-grandsons, Jeff and Joe Narron. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Science of Mind Center, 5809 Lakeside Ave., Richmond, Va 23227

WADDY
Departed this life May 14, 1997 Clarence (Pear Shape) L. Waddy of 1201 Greenville Ave. He is survived by one daughter, Rita Volley; four sons, Clarence, Earl, Michael and Carlton Waddy; eight grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; among them, devoted Lillian Waddy; two daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; four sisters-in-law and other relatives and friends, among them devoted Rachael McFadden. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday. Rev. Herbert O. Pollard Sr. officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. WILLARD
W. Ray Willard, 63 of Richmond, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Kay Frances Solari Willard; a daughter and son-in -law, Michele W. and Dewey Berglund of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, June W. Allen; two brothers, William N. Willard of York, Pa. and Clyde Willard of Radford, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 5200 Grove Ave. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 5200 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226.

WOOD
Madeline Voltz Wood, age 94 of Richmond, died May 17, 1997. She was the widow of R. Joseph Wood and is survived by her daughter, Mary E. Wood; a niece, Joan C. Jennings; a nephew, Robert W. Cournow and other devoted nieces and nephews, all of Richmond. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Office, 3801 Augusta Ave. where the family will receive friends Sunday 5 to 7 p.m. and where a Christian Wake will be held Monday 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday 11 a.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary.

WRIGHT
John James Wright Jr., 71 of Richmond, died May 17, 1997. He is survived by two sons, James C. and Ernest Graham Wright; two daughters, Patricia Scott and Regeina Stockner; four sisters, Mildred Miller of Richmond, Coleen Kidd of Cumberland, and Pearl Goosby of Dillwyn and Doris Valentine of Tennessee; one brother, Everette Franklin Wright of Mechanicsville; and five grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

ANDREWS
Leslie Manson Andrews of Chester, Virginia died Saturday, February 8, 1997. Mr. Andrews was a native of Ettrick and was the son of the late Norman and Mary Archer Andrews. He was a member of Kingsland Baptist Church and was a retired millwright for Dupont. He is survived by his wife, Gladys B. Andrews; daughter, Louise A. Wilson, Chester; son, Leslie M. Andrews Jr. of Matoaca; daughter, Jean A. Allen, Petersburg; stepson, Wilson A. Berryman of Chester; stepson, Rowland R. Berryman, Chesterfield; stepdaughter, Sandra B. Marshall, Chester; stepson, V. Eugene Berryman, Chesterfield; 26 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be con ducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 1997 in the Chesterfield Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 West Hundred Road, Chester. The Rev. John Marks, Pastor of Kingsland Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Bensley Bermuda Rescue Squad.

BARSCH
Philip Barsch of Richmond departed this life on Thursday, February 6, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Marian Sheer Barsch; daughter, Barbara Saldanha of Las Vegas, Nev.; two stepdaughters, Cheryl Brinkley of Midlothian and Marilyn Ashby of Charlottesville; stepson-in-law,, Dr. Michael Ashby; four step-grandchildren, Shea and Misty Brinkley and Molly and David Ashby; sister, Elizabeth Bell of California; and niece, Barbara Gardon of New York. Mr. Barsch was a veteran of two wars and retired as a financial advisor for the Federal Highway Department. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m., Monday, February 10 at B'Nai Shalom in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
