Ralph Shifflett of Richmond, Va. died October 28, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Bernice P. Shifflett; brother, Jack Shifflett; sister, Margaret Berkhead both of Earlysville, Va. Mr. Shifflett was an auto mechanic in the local Richmond area for many years. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Graveside services will be held Monday 11 a.m. Westhampton Memorial Park.

SIMMONS

David Scott Simmons, age 26, of Midlothian died Thursday, October 28, 1999. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Janice S. Simmons of Midlothian; his father, Lester C. Simmons Jr. of Highland Springs; one sister, Christy Simmons of Highland Springs; grandmother, Mrs. Lola K. Dixon of Highland Springs; grandfather, Lester C. Simmons Sr. of Deltaville; a devoted family member, Tammy Parrish. His remains rest at K.L. Jordan Funeral Chapel, 5008 Nine Mile Rd., where the family will receive friends Saturday, 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of David S. Simmons, the Animal Humane Society, 1600 Chamberlayne Ave., Richmond, Va. 23222.

Mr. Thomas O. "Tommy" Simmons, 76, of Jarratt, died Saturday, October 30, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Thelma R. Simmons; daughter, Sandra S. Rae of Jarratt; two sons, Kenneth L. Simmons of Richmond and James T. "Jimmy" Simmons of Jarratt; four grandchildren, Wayne Lee Rae Jr., Anne Marie Simmons, Dennis Edward Simmons, and Kristen Nichole Simmons; his stepmother, Vera Bell Simmons of Emporia; four sisters, Alice S. Pope of Boykins, Joyce S. Comer of Richmond, Jean S. Bass of Jarratt, and Louise S. Tomlinson of Emporia; and one brother, Bobby B. Simmons of Courtland. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Owen Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held graveside 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 2, at High Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad or Jarratt Volunteer Fire Department.

Elva G. (Billie) Smith, 76, of Mechanicsville, widow of Raymond Lee Smith, died Saturday, October 30, 1999. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara S. Perrin, Sandra L. Loving and Linda S. Frye; one son, Raymond L. (Ray) Smith; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Barbara Shaub, Clarice Clark, Audrey Smith and Betty Bales; four brothers, Everette Talley, Herbert Talley, Calvin Talley and Larry Talley. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 1. Interment in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ashcake Rescue Squad.

TYLER

Frances Dunn Tyler, 85, of Emporia, widow of S.B. Tyler, died Saturday, October 30, 1999. She is survived by a stepson, Ben Tyler Jr.; three brothers, Horace Dunn of Emporia, Claude Dunn of Franklin an d Howard Dunn of Burlington, N.C.; one sister, Ruby Williams of Emporia; and two step-granddaughters. The family will receive friends Monday, November 1, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Owen Funeral Home, Jarratt, Va., where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Interment will be 3 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.

WALIN

Margaret A. Walin, age 77, of Richmond, widow of Frank Joseph Walin died Wednesday, October 27, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Walin of Richmond. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. Interment private. Memorial contributions may be made to Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad. Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, assisting family with arrangements.

WARNER

Robert (Bob) John Warner passed away October 27, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; children, Kimberly Stradone, Jason Stradone, Ronald Stradone; and grandchildren, Edward and Jesse McKinney; sisters, Mary Jane White of Pinehurst, N.C., and Susan Connole of Seattle, Wash. Memorial service will be held Thursday, November 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthias Episcopal Church on Huguenot Rd. In lieu of flowers, remembrances requested to American Heart Association or Hunters for the Hungry.

YATES

Doris B. (Dot) Yates, 69, of Richmond, died Thursday, October 28, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Ryland E. (Skinnie) Yates Sr.; children, Linda Y. Hardy and her husband, Tom, Diane Y. Saxon and her husband, Mark, Dickie Yates and his wife, Marie, and Andy Yates; six grandchildren, Tommy and Mandy Hardy, Nikki Saxon, A. J. and Cody Yates, Abby Yates; sister, Joyce Montgomery; brother, Mel Burton. Her remains rest at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends, Saturday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, October 31. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ABERNATHY

Benjamin Cleo Abernathy, age 75, of McKenney, Va., died November 27, 1998. He is survived by a daughter, Ann A. Winn of McKenney; two sons, Benjamin C. Abernathy Jr. of Wilsons and Allen Abernathy of McKenney; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Cut Bank Baptist Church Cemetery, McKenney. ALLEN

William "Bill" Allen, 51, of Glen Allen, Va., left us to be with his heavenly father on November 26, 1998. He is survived by his loving family, daughter, Michelle Bowden; devoted mother, Mary "Susie" Allen; two grandsons, William and Mycheus Bowden; one brother, Walter "CR" Allen; four sisters; and five brothers- in-law, Margaret and Earnest Harris, Edna and Howard James, Connie and Howard Carrington, Wilnette and Harold Robertson and Herbert Harris; one sister-in-law, Virginia King; nine nieces; six nephews; six great-nephews; a host of other relatives and friends, two devoted, Helen Thomas and Lester Gordon. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, Washington Hwy., (U.S. 1N) Ashland. Funeral service will be held Monday, November 30, 1998 at 1:15 p.m. at the Abner Baptist Church, Glen Allen. Rev. Warren J. Lewis, Pastor officiating. Remains will lie in state one hour prior to service. Interment Roselawn Memory Gardens. Family and friends assemble at the church at 1 p.m. McCarthy, Director.

ALVIS

Died November 28, 1998, Mason Alvis, 72, of Montpelier. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Alvis; his daughters, Eunice Lipscomb, Linda Wickham and Betty Brannan; three sisters, three brothers; numerous nieces and nephews, including, Coleman Baughan of Montpelier. The family will receive friends Sunday 3 to 8 p.m. in the Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Funeral services 2 p.m. Monday in Shiloh United Methodist Church. Interment church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 17420 Shiloh Road, Montpelier, 23192 or West Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 276, Mont pelier 23192.

ARMSTRONG

Alvin Franklin Armstrong, age 76, of King & Queen Court House, died November 27, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Edna Elizabeth Armstrong; three daughters, Marie A. Jenkins, Barbara Buckner, and Patricia A. Bowman; three sisters, Mary Alma Huckstep, Virginia Brooks and Elizabeth Shafer; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the B. W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, where visitation will be Monday 7 to 9 p.m. and where services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery.

ARNOLD

Margaret J. Arnold, 94, of Richmond, died November 27, 1998. She was the widow of Harry L. Arnold and is survived by her sons, James W. White and Howard L. Arnold, both of Richmond; stepchildren, Helen Barham of Winchester and Harry L. Arnold of Berryville; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Mrs. Arnold was a member of Christ Methodist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday and where services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

BEST

Cletus Charles (CB) Best, 83, of Chesterfield County, died Friday, November 27, 1998 at Southside Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. He was a native of Crestline, Ohio, but had spent most of his life in this area. In recent years he had resided with his daughter and son-in-law at their home in Sutherland. He was the son of the late William and Mary Kurtzman Best, a member of Wood's United Methodist Church, the Perkinson-Dyson Bible Class and the United Methodist Men of the Church. He was a retired Civil Service employee with 30 years of service at Fort Lee, a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and the widower of Aurelia Perkinson Best. Mr. Best is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara (Babs) and Jerry Johnson of Sutherland; grandson, Jeremy Johnson of Albany, Ga.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Johnson of Richmond, and Jessica Johnson of Sutherland; one sister, Ester B. Horning of Crestline, Ohio. Also surviving are his faithful sisters-in-law, Bernice P. Schenck, Shirley P. Cimburke, Bettie P. Shelton, Jean P. Joyner and Mary P. Chalkley, all of Chesterfield County. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. in Wood's United Methodist Church, 7200 Hickory Rd., with Rev. David C. Morefield, Rev. Gene C. Tatum and Rev. Darwood Rowan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night, November 30, 1998 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Flowers are welcome, but the family prefers memorial donations to Wood's United Methodist Church, 8301 Hickory Rd., Petersburg, Va. 23803.

BRADLEY

Ethel Virginia Bradley, 96, of Richmond, died November 27, 1998. She was a retired machine operator with Whitlocks. Miss Bradley is survived by a sister, May B. Hurst; a brother, Linwood Bradley; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Her remains rest at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10) where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday 7 to 9 p.m. and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment in Maury Cemetery.

BRIGGS

Mrs. Nan Waller Briggs, 94, formerly of 100 Oak Rd., Butner, N.C., died Friday, November 27, 1998 at Carver Living Center. A native of Spotsylvania, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Kate Dew Waller. She grew up in Richmond and attended Hollins College, William and Mary and received a degree in Social Work from VCU. Mrs. Briggs attended Ginter Park Presbyterian Church in Richmond. She moved to Durham, N.C. in 1989. Surviving are one son, Dr. Andrew Gessner Briggs III of Butner; a niece, Betty Waller of Richmond; and three grandchildren, Linda, Carol and John. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va. Funeral arrangements are with Hall- Wynne Funeral Service, Durham, N.C.

CAREY

Virgie Woodruff Carey, 90, of Moseley, Va., died November 28, 1998. She is survived by nine children, Houston Garrison, Monroe Garrison, Betty Edmundson, Ann Hines, June Burges, Kay Williams, Gary Garrison, James Boyd, and Bascom Boyd; five sisters, Eura Teague, Cornelia Spease, Loreine Humbert, Nadine McCale, and Jean Swisher; 27 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and where funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Glenco Cemetery, Big Stone Gap, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Manchester Vol. Rescue Squad.

COX

Merchant Lee Cox, age 84, of Glen Allen, Va., formerly of Manakin-Sabot, Va., departed this life after a brief illness at MCV Hospital, Wednesday, November 25, 1998. He was a veteran of World War II, retired civil service employee of 37 years at McGuire VA Hospital. He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted goddaughter, Evangeline (Van) Howell-Freeman and her husband, SFC, Retired, Joseph L. Freeman and their children; cousins; and many devoted friends, among them, Mr. James Wilson Howell of Manakin and Mr. and Mrs. Eli Pleasant of Henrico Co. Family will receive friends Sunday 3 to 6 p.m. at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral service Monday, November 30, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Rt. 6, Manakin-Sabot, Va. Laura Augusta Custalow, 49, of Sandston, went home to be with Jesus November 28, 1998. She is survived by her husband, Howard D. Custalow Sr.; her parents, Walter and Virginia Edwards; a daughter, Spring Myers and her husband, Darrell; two stepsons, Howard Custalow Jr. and Richard Custalow; a brother, Tommy Edwards; a sister, Nancy Scilleppi; three grandchildren; seven step- grandchildren; and many dear brothers and sisters in the Lord. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee- Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be con ducted Tuesday, December 1, at Emmanuel Tabernacle Assembly of God, Rt. 615 (Walnut Grove Rd.) in Mechanicsville at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the Mattaponi Indian Baptist Church Cemetery. Deacon Harold Alfred Dyson Sr., of 1300 Bentbrook Dr., entered eternal life, November 27, 1998. On November 26, 1998, Jonathan Edwards Jr., PhD. Beloved husband of Cora M. Edwards (McCormick); devoted father of Laura Harris, Elaine Sharlofsky, Peter Edwards and Frederick Edwards; dear sister of Martha Arnette; and dear grandfather of John Harris. Mr. William J. "Willie" Fajna, 85, of Jarratt, died Saturday, November 28, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Pearl W. Fajna; nine sons; a daughter; three step-daughters; and a number of grandchildren; and great-grand children. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd. in Jarratt, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment Emporia Cemetery.
