Ethel Whanger Long, 88, of Richmond, widow of Arthur Drummond Long Sr., died Monday, October 4, 1999. She is survived by her son, Arthur D. Long Jr. of Richmond; daughter, Sharon Long Harper of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Timothy, Edwin and Rebecca Long and Catherine and Robert Harper. Mrs. Long was a beauty shop operator for 60 years. She was a member of Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church, the Hermitage Garden Club and Areme Chapter No. 17, O.E.S. Martha Dorsey Murdoch, 86, died Sunday, October 3, 1999 at her home in Brandermill Woods Retirement Center, Midlothian, Va. She retired from full time service as homemaker and office manager for the Murdoch Sales Agency. Her skill in china painting, ceramics, needlepoint, and sewing adorned her home and those of her family and friends. She was active in several Episcopal churches during her lifetime. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Richard Burgess Murdoch, who died one year ago at Brandermill Woods Retirement Center. The firstborn of Nathan G. Dorsey Sr. of Viva Brown Dorsey of Mount Airy, Md. Martha was also preceded in death by her brother, 1st Lt. Nathan G. Dorsey Jr. of wounds on Okinawa; and her sister, Blanche Butler of Mount Airy, Md. Martha Murdoch is survived by her son, Richard Dorsey Murdoch, Chaplain (LTC), U.S. Army Retired, who resides with his wife, Jane in Williamsburg, Va.; and her daughter, Ann Murdoch Herrelko, who resides with her husband, Frank in Richmond, Va. Her grandchildren are Laura Murdoch Esquire of Yorktown, Va. and Andrew Howard Murdoch of Oklahoma City, Okla. Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 6 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Mount Airy, Md. Mrs. Mary Devlin Palmerlee, 84, widow of Col. Ret. U.S.A. Thomas Richardson Palmerlee of Petersburg, Va., passed away Monday, October 4, 1999 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She was a native of Washington, D.C. and was the daughter of the late Andrew L. and Mary Murphy Devlin. Mrs. Palmerlee was a retired civil service employee from Fort Lee, Va. She was an active communicant at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Petersburg and was very active in the Senior Citizen’s group. Mrs. Palmerlee is survived by one son, Thomas Andrew Palmerlee; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Palmerlee of Prince George County. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew and Edmund Devlin; and two sisters, Annette and Elizabeth Devlin. A Christian Wake will be held at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Robert M. Spencer, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. Mrs. Palmerlee’s family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morris & Son Funeral Home. Thomas E. Raney, age 64, of Virginia Beach, Va., died October 4, 1999 at a local hospital. Born in Richmond, Va., he was a retired block operator for Amtrak Railroad with 32 years of service. He was a member of T.C.U. Union #1402. Survivors include his wife, Doreen Taylor Rainey of Va. Beach; daughter, Wendy Hayes and her husband, Allan of Westminster, Colo.; son, Thomas E. Rainey III of Vanceboro, Maine; aunt, Ophelia Benton of Richmond, Va.; and several cousins. A funeral service will be held at a later time. Burial will be in Ewing Cemetery, Trenton, N.J. Robert (Jimmy) Porter Simpkins, born November 7, 1912, died October 5, 1999. He is survived by four nephews; O. Warren Long, Garland Long, Major W. Dement and Robert W. Dement; a niece, June Dement Frick and a very dear friend, Hazel W. Johnson. Mr. Simpkins was originally from Cold Harbor and lived in Lakeside. Gladys Smith Tatum, age 85, of Richmond, widow of C. Maury Tatum, died Monday, October 4, 1999. She is survived by her sister, Paula S. Mackey; niece, Ruth M. Martin and her husband, Dr. E. Davis Martin Jr.; nephew, Paul T. Mackey; two great-nephews, Richard D. Martin and Matthew D. Martin; one great-niece, Michele M. Murmer, all of Richmond. Mrs. Tatum was a graduate of Westhampton College, where she was a loyal and active member of the Alumnae Association, having served as secretary to the Class of 1935 for many years. She was retired from the City of Richmond. Mrs. Tatum was a devoted and lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where she served as a Deacon. She was a longtime member and supporter of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and a member of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Baptist Historical Society. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Toney Sr. and his wife, Arlene; seven grandchildren, Marie Thompson, Garland Toney Jr., Suzanne Mills, Karen Gragnani, Shelly Blanks, Jennifer Hudgins and Douglas Hudgins; along with 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Blankenship and Margaret Thurston; and a host of nieces and nephews. WILSON
Ashby Stephen Wilson of Hampton died on October 4, 1999 in Richmond, Virginia, at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Scott Wilson; his son, Ashby S. Wilson Jr. of Richmond; his daughter, Jane Wilson Hardy of Baltimore; his brother, John E. Wilson of Richmond; his sister, Virginia Halliday of Williamsburg; and four grandchildren, Ashby Stephen Wilson III and Elizabeth Tinsley Wilson of Richmond and George Edward Hardy IV and Katherine Coriell Hardy of Baltimore. Mr. Wilson was a graduate of Virginia military Institute, served with the 111th Field Artillery of the 29th Division during World War II and retired as a Colonel from the United States Army. A life-long resident of Hampton, Mr. Wilson retired from the Piping Design Department of the Newport News Shipyard in 1975. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hampton, the VMI Keydets Club, the Hampton Historical Society, and was a contract bridge Life Master. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 8, 1999 at Parklawn Memorial Park by the Rev. John B. Morris. Following the interment will be a reception for friends and family at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church of Hampton.
