MANN
Gayle S. Mann Jr. passed away at his home May 20, 1997. He was born in Baltimore, Md., on October 21, 1918. He followed in his father's footsteps by working in heavy construction, starting as an apprentice boy to the master mechanic, while still a teenager. He became a master diesel mechanic in his 20's. Some of the jobs he worked during this phase of his life included the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Thomas Circle Underpass, Andrews Field, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He served his country as a mining engineer in the Brazilian Amazon in 1942 and 1943, and in the South Pacific as a civilian advisor to the military, building roads and airfields, until the war ended. He married Barbara L. Gaines in 1946, and shortly thereafter moved to Richmond. With his wife at his side, he started his own construction company in 1947. He owned and operated four businesses over the years including his current business, "CSC Equipment & Supply". He built a number of prominent Richmond landmarks, including the fountains at Richmond Memorial Hospital, the Blue Cross Building, and St. Mary's Hospital, until he sold the construction company in the early 1990's. This year marks his 50th anniversary as a Richmond businessman. Mr. Mann was a member of the Westhampton Masonic Lodge. His hobbies included gardening, woodworking and antique clock restoration. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara; and by his parents and his oldest sister, Fay Mann MacIntosh. He is survived by hundreds of friends and colleagues; by a brother, Daniel Mann, and a sister, Marjorie Mann Flaherty, both residing in Maryland; by two daughters, Barbara Fay Mann of Richmond and Mary-Jacque Mann Ferguson and her husband, Wayne F. Ferguson, of Ashland, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Mann's family requests that donations be made, in his name, to the Childhood Language Center of Richmond Inc., 4202 Hermitage Road, Richmond, Va. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Funeral notice later.
RUIZ
Edwin Ruiz, 73, of Richmond, Va., departed this life May 14, 1997 in his native town of Boquete' Panama. He is survived by his daughter, Robin Gray of Chesterfield, Va.; his son, Dr. David Ruiz of Budd Lake, N.J.; his grandchildren, Michael and Crystal Gray, also from Chesterfield; several brothers; sisters; nieces; nephews; and cousins in Panama and the U.S.A. Mr. Ruiz, a graduate of the University of Richmond, was retired from the Virginia State Health Department. He was a member of the Lion's Club and attended Bon Air Baptist Church. Mr. Ruiz received recognition for his work as a language translator for the Richmond Circuit Court System. He is also recognized for his help in establishing the first church for the Central American Mission in Boquete'. He was laid to rest May 15 in his beloved hometown of Boquete', Panama. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
RYAN
Robert Emmett Ryan, 76, of Richmond, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Mr. Ryan was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Sydnor Hydrodynamics, Inc. He is survived by his wife, Anna Stump Ryan; his son, Robert E. Ryan Jr.; his daughter, Constance Ryan Cole and son-in-law, John C. Cole; his grandson, Charles Ryan Cole; one brother, Leslie L. Ryan of Port Charlotte, Fla.; three sisters, Sister Mildred Ryan of Mobile, Ala., Gertrude R. Caudle of Richmond and Kathleen R. Connelly of Durham, N.C. A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad.
SANFORD
Gladys M. Shiflett Sanford, 68, of Sutherland, Va., formerly of Highland Springs, widow of Vernon W. Sanford, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997. She is survived by a daughter, Geneva Toms of Sutherland; two sons, Ver non L. and Gallie R. Sanford of Highland Springs; a brother, Wilmer Lee Shiflett of Clifton Forge; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Remains rest at Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Mrs. Gertrude Chiles Saunders "Gerty Chiles," retired school teacher of Richmond departed this life May 19, 1997. She is survived by her devoted cousin, Mrs. Mildred W. Henderson and her husband, James Henderson Sr.; a host of other cousins and friends. Her remains rest at the W.S. SAVEDGE
Mabel Seward Savedge, of Suffolk, died May 19, 1997. A native of Surry Co., she was a daughter of the late George and Lelia Seward and the widow of Henry Scott Savedge. Mrs. Savedge was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, a devoted Sunday school teacher until her death, and a member of the Annette Hall Missionary Circle. She completed studies at State Teachers College in Farmville, and taught school in Hope well until her marriage in 1930. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Ann S. and Robert L. Herring of Suffolk; a son and his wife, Henry S. Jr. and Anne G. Savedge of Richmond; five grandchildren, J. Scott and H. Kent Savedge, Leigh Ann H. Creson, Sarah Evelyn Savedge and Jill H. Queen. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, N. Main St. by the Rev. Charles W. Thompson, with burial at Moore's Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Elberon. Doris May Weaver, age 90, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at The Hermitage. She was the widow of C. Warren Weaver and was preceded in death by her husband, Landon Cutler May, and a son L. Cutler May Jr. Mrs. Weaver is survived by a sister, Mrs. Emma Chalkley; nieces, nephews and their children; a stepson, James A. Weaver, and his family. She was a past member of the Tuckahoe Women's Club and a member of Reveille United Methodist Church. Mrs. Bettie Jackson Bowen of Gasburg, Va. went to be with the Lord November 30, 1998. She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Robert Bowen; a son, Mark Taylor of St. Simons Island, Ga.; three daughters, Betty Jean Kirby of Richmond, Shirley B. Gilley of Dolphin and Geraldine B. Durette of Richmond; ten grandchildren and ten great- grandchildren and a brother, Willie Thomas Jackson of Yorktown. BROGLEY
George Henry Brogley, 92, passed away November 29, 1998 at a hospital in Richmond, Va. He had lived the last five years in Henrico County, Va. The widower of Florence Shaw Brogley, he lived on Cleveland Ave. in Highland Park, N.J., 87 years. Mr. Brogley was a Highland Park Active Volunteer Fireman since 1937. He was a member of the Middlesex County Fire/Police Association, Highland Park Exempt Fireman's Association and the New Jersey Fireman's Association. Mr. Brogley was a member of the New Jersey State Council Jr. Order United American Mechanics, local Goodwill Council No. 32 and he belonged to the Sheet Metal Worker's International Association, Local No. 27. He was Plant Engineer for 41 years at Midland Ross Corporation in Highland Park, New Jersey. Mr. Brogley had no children, but he had several relatives, and many, many friends. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 5 at the Elmwood Cemetery in New Brunswick, N.J. The service will be performed by the Rev. Joan E. Fleming from Christ Church.
