JOHNNY MITCHELL SR.
Johnny "Steve" Mitchell, Sr., age 63, of Bassett, died Monday, June 3, 2013, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on December 9, 1949 and was a son of Alvin "Ab" Mitchell and Irene Virginia Holt Rigney. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie "Red" Mitchell; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Roberts Mitchell and a stepfather, William Rigney.
He is survived by two daughters, Laurie M. Young of Henry and Melody M. Hyde of Bassett; one son, Johnny Steve Mitchell, Jr. of Axton; his mother, Irene Virginia Holt Rigney of Bassett; his father Alvin "Ab" Mitchell and stepmother, Ola Mae Mitchell, both of Bassett; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastors Delmas Rorrer and Danny Wright officiating. Burial was in the Stateline Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
CHARLES E. WRIGHT
Charles Edward Wright, age 63, of Stuart, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Henry County on February 8, 1950 and was a son of the late Luther Paul and Mayola Turner Wright.
He had worked as a deputy sheriff with the Patrick County Sheriff's Department, as an assistant forest warden and as a security guard, and had been the owner/operator of Wright's Asphalt Sealers. He had been a foster parent to 56 children.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Patricia
Smith Wright of the home; two sons, Jerry Wright of Axton and James Wright of Christiansburg; two daughters, Kristy Leigh Wright of Stuart and Jenny Wright of Alabama; one foster daughter, Melissa Hopkins of Martinsville; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia Cannaday of Stuart.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart, and at other times at the home. All other services will be private.

CECIL R. WILSON
Mr. Cecil Ray Wilson, age 77 of Lawsonville, N.C., passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Stanleytown Healthcare Center in Bassett.
He was born in Patrick County on September 8, 1935 to the late Pete and Gladys Lawson Wilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lonzie Wilson.
He was a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church where he thoroughly enjoyed going. He had worked for 42 years with Wood Brothers Racing Team where he was affectionately known as "Big C" and he also worked for Fieldcrest Mills for over 40 years. He loved being "Papa" to his grandsons.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Sharon Steele Wilson of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Suzanne Wilson of Stuart; a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Dennis Shelton of Stuart; three grandsons, Justin Wilson and girlfriend, Sara Webber, Brandon Shelton and girlfriend Stephanie Clark, Brad Shelton and wife Taylor; two brothers and sisters-in-law, A.J. and Elizabeth Wilson of Mayodan, N.C., and David and Rebecca Wilson of Patrick Springs; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Patsy Wilson of Ridgeway and Margaret and Randy Bouldin of Martinsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 7, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastors Reggie Steele, Jerry Whitlow and Don Reynolds officiating. Burial was in the Peter's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawsonville.
The family received friends Thursday evening at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

SANDRA R. BELCHER
Sandra Rose Belcher, age 47, of Vesta, died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 9, 1966 and was a daughter of Edward Adam Neyman and Rose Marie Sief Neyman, both of Vesta.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Robert Dale Belcher of the home; one daughter, Crystal McClimmans of Blacksburg; two stepsons, Lawrence and Barrett Nichols, both of Floyd; two brothers, Steve Neyman of Copper Hill and Scott Neyman of Vesta.
All services were private.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
WILLIAM M. CLIFTON
William McKinley Clifton, 95, of Ingleside, Ill., died on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
He was born in Dante, Va., and was a son of the late Alga and Rosa Clifton. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Arzie Clifton, Raymon Clifton, Essie Cassell, Lill Wood, Dorothy Cassell, and Vernelle Boyd.
He moved to Chicago when he was in his 20s, later moving to Ingleside. He was a nature lover and enjoyed caring for all the neighborhood animals. He loved gardening and music, and was an avid clock collector. He was also proud to have obtained his driver's license at the age of 95.
Surviving are his children, Pam (Paul) Ellis Weisshaar and Steven Clifton; grandsons David Ellis and Rick Ellis; sister Reva Reeves; former wife Dorothy Cates; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A graveside service with military honors at the Plasters family cemetery in Vesta will begin at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday). Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is handling the graveside service arrangements.
MARY L. CRAIG
Mary Lou Craig, 92, of Pleasant View Drive, Patrick Springs, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born on June 12, 1921 in Surry County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Ila Hawks Sawyers Cassidy and Columbus Sawyers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rufus G. Craig; a daughter, Mary Frances Craig; a son, Grady R. Craig; five sisters and one brother.
She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Patrick Springs.
Surviving are her daughters, Marie Goard of Stuart, Dorothy Holt of Martinsville, Iva Beavers of Ridgeway, and Sue Godbee of Patrick Springs; sons, Arlis W. Craig of Martinsville and David G. Craig of Patrick Springs; sisters, Betty Jean
Jones of Cana and Medie Craig of Mount Airy, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Services' Stuart Chapel with the Revs. Calvin Reynolds and David Freeman officiating. Burial will be in the Hubbard family Cemetery, Patrick Springs.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the home of her daughter, Sue Godbee, 762 Taylor View Drive, Patrick Springs.
EMMA G. EDWARDS
Emma Elizabeth "Libby" Gates Edwards, 63, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C.
She was born in Surry County, N.C., on February 14, 1950 and was a daughter of the late George Washington Gates and Betty Davis Gates Jones. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Deborah Yvonne Gates; and three brothers, Robert Mcree Gates, George William Gates and Dale McCormick.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Holy Cross Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Clay Eric Edwards of the home; three daughters, Samantha Hull and Kathy Marquina, both of Mount Airy, and Gina and Jeff Burnette of Cana; one son, Roy Lee Senter Jr. of Mount Airy; one stepdaughter, Michelle Edwards of Mount Airy; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Holder of Mount Airy; one brother, Dennis Gates of Ararat; her stepfather, Rev. George Junior
Jones of Mount Airy; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Baptist Church with the Rev. Butch Holder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Holy Cross Baptist Church.

VERA P. HARBOUR
Vera Pendleton Harbour, age 84, of Stuart, died Friday, June 28, 2013, at her home.
She was born on December 21, 1928 and was a daughter of the late Delmar Joe Pendleton and Clarris Rorrer Pendleton. She was brought up by her maternal grandparents, the late Reuben and Fannie Trent Rorrer. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, George Wesley Harbour Sr.; and a half brother, John Pendleton.
She retired from Liberty Fabrics after 38 years service; and was a longtime member of
Smith River Church of the Brethren where she was a member of the ladies' fellowship and the adult choir. She was also the church clerk for many years.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Pilson and Brenda Collins, both of Stuart; one son, George W. Harbour Jr. of Stuart; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her stepmother, Elsie Rakes Pendleton of Stuart; four half sisters, Elva Pendleton, Shirley Harris, Larmie Hylton, all of Stuart, and Judy Kidd of Amelia; and five half brothers, Jim Pendleton, Gary Pendleton, Gerald Pendleton, Danny Pendleton, and Ronald Pendleton, all of Stuart.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Danny Gilley officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

JOHNNY H. CAIN JR.
Johnny Henderson Cain Jr., 74, of Ararat, died at his home Friday, November 29, 2013. He was born in Stokes County, N.C., on May 26, 1939 and was a son of the late Johnny Henderson Cain Sr. and Edna Moorefield Cain. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Maxine "Bue" Cain Hopkins; and two brothers, Bernie and Robert Cain. He was a farmer and a member of Willis Gap Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Carlene Bowman Cain of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerry "Jay" Cain and Danny and Beth Cain, all of Ararat; six grandchildren, Jamie, Jerry, Roscoe, Shona, Nicholas and Alexus; seven great-grandchildren, Camron, Payton, Blaine, Alyssa, Montana, Logan and Trent; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Daphne and J.W. Holcomb of King, N.C., and Erlene and Wilford Marshall, Effie and Noel Eaton, Shirley and Clark Boyd all of Ararat; one brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Glenda Cain of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, N.C., with the Rev. Curt Ashley and Darren Slate officiating. Burial was in Willis Gap Baptist Church cemetery.
PHYLLIS V. CLEMENT
Phyllis Vipperman Clement, 77, of Ararat, passed away at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C., on Saturday, November 30, 2013. She was born February 16, 1936 in Stokes County, N.C., to the late Arlis Wendell and Pauline Cook Vipperman. She attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga., and loved her work as a home health care aide. She was a member of Mount Ararat Pentecostal Holiness Church, but called Bethel Presbyterian Church her home church for many years. She was a loving, virtuous woman, always putting the welfare of others before her own as long as her health permitted.
Left to cherish her precious memory are her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Barry and Tammy Clement of Mount Airy, N.C.; a granddaughter, Beth Clement Meadows and her husband Benji of Mount Airy; a brand new great-granddaughter, Emma Kate Meadows; two sisters and brother-in-law, Judy and Rayford Gammons and Ruth Carol Vipperman; and two brothers and sister-in-law, Kelly and Becky Vipperman and Teddy Vipperman.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy by the Revs. Mark George and Buford Jessup. JEFFREY A. GOARD
Jeffrey Alan Goard, age 66, of Patrick Springs, died Friday, November 29 at his home. He was born in Patrick County on July 7, 1947 and was a son of the late Earvin G. Goard and Freda Rutter Goard Davies. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Bernard Davies. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietname War and had worked in the maintenance department at International Paper.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Terry Goard of the home; one son, Steven Goard of Patrick Springs; one grandchild; three stepchildren; five stepgrandchildren; a half sister, Janice Goard Keatley of Patrick Springs; and a stepbrother, Alexander Toufas of Ridgeway.
A memorial service will be held today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastors Mark Wright and Mark Terry officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
VELVA B. GUNTER
Velva Baliles Gunter, 91, formerly of Ridgeway, died Sunday, December 1, 2013, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C. She was born in Patrick County on June 10, 1922 and was a daughter of the late Daniel W. and Etta Vaughn Baliles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Gunter; a sister, Vada B. Branscome; and two brothers, Clarence W. Baliles and Henry Claude Baliles. She graduated from Blue Ridge Mission School and attended Radford College. She had once worked at DuPont and Smart and Thrifty Dress Shop. She was a long-time member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn Hodges of Eden, N.C.; and one brother, Daniel Leon Baliles of Stoneville, N.C.
The funeral service will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Starling Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. David Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
