EMMA G. SPRADLIN
Emma Gunter Spradlin of Stuart, died Saturday, March 23, 2013.
She was born in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late H.W. Gunter Sr. and Kathleen Gregory Gunter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Spradlin.
Surviving are one daughter, Lisa Ann Slate of Oklahoma; two sons, Gregory Lewis Spradlin of Kansas and John Walter Spradlin of North Carolina; one brother, H.W. Gunter Jr. of Stuart; and three granddaughters.
The funeral service was held Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church in Stuart with the Rev. Mike Hundley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Norris, Wayne Doss, Larry Vernon, Jay Norris, Sonny Farmer and Rodney Stowe.
Arrangements were by Norris Funeral Services in Stuart.
MARY H. CARTER
Mary Elizabeth "Lib"
Brown Hill Carter, age 83, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Friday, June 7, 2013, at the Woltz Hospice Home.
She was born in Patrick County on July 15, 1929 and was a daughter of the late Merlin Sparger and Phoebe Bondurant Brown. She was also preceded in death by a son, Mike Hill; her first husband, Warren Hill, her second husband, Carl Carter; a sister, Dorothy Scales Baum and a brother, Joe Bill Brown.
Surviving are one son, Tim Hill of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter-in-law; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Skyline Memory Gardens by Eric Sawyers and followed by a "Celebration of Life" and a potluck dinner at Fellowship Church in Ararat.

ROBERT CARTER
Robert "Pete" "Jingles" Carter, 78, of Bassett, died Sunday, June 9, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on March 25, 1935, in Patrick Springs and was a son of the late Troy Clifton and Eldean Martin Carter.
Surviving are his wife of almost 52 years, Betty G.
Carter of the home; one son, Randy
Carter of Bassett; two grandchildren; and one sister, Irma Ruth Nicholson of W.Va.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Bill Moss officiating. Burial will follow in Providence United Methodist Church cemetery.
LILA M. CRUISE
Lila M. Cruise, age 95, formerly of Meadows of Dan, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Floyd County and was a daughter of the late Dexter Tolbert and Edna Moles Tolbert Sutphin. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Towe; her second husband, Ike Cruise; five sisters, Custis Clifton, Mary Sowers, Eva Sowers, Hava Hill and Ruby West; and three brothers, Freel Sutphin, Edward Sutphin, and Garvin Sutphin.
She had worked as a cook at Mabry's Mill.
Surviving are one sister, Frances Thompson; and two brothers, Wendell Sutphin and
Brown Sutphin, all of Willis; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Friday at Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy, N.C., with Pastor Gary Combs officiating.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
RANDY R. FOSTER
Randy Russell Foster, 61, of Stuart, died Monday June 10, 2013, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born on July 28, 1951 in West Virginia and was a son of the late Doris Darnell
Foster and Grady Foster. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Foster.
He worked at Spring Industry in Martinsville in the maintenance department.
Surviving are his wife, Julie Faye
Foster of the home; three daughters, Jennifer Evans and Sandy Warner, both of Ohio, and Shawyna Basham of Floyd; one son, Jerry Swinehart of Stuart; two sisters, Nanette Morrison of Stuart, Vanessa Manuel of Eden, N.C.; one grandson; four granddaughters; and many nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Norris Funeral Services in Stuart with Pastor Mark Wright officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the home.

DOROTHY T. GRAVLEY
Dorothy Helen Thomas Gravley, age 84, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Thursday morning June 6, 2013, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born March 18, 1929 in Surry County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Calvin and Annie Mae Sprinkle Thomas. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Roger Thomas.
She was retired from Boyles Shoe Store and was a longtime member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband Theodore Clinton Gravley of the home; one daughter, LuAnne Hill of Claudville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joy Mae Shore of Winston-Salem and Frances Bunker of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; and one brother, Wade Thomas of Raleigh, N.C.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church with services conducted by the Rev. Dennis "Bud" Cameron. Burial was in the church cemetery.

VIVIAN L. HELMS
Vivian Light Helms, 87, of Stuart, died at her home on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
She was born in Patrick County on October 24, 1925 to the late Clifford Eugene Light and Vergie Clifton Light. Her husband, John D. Helms and a sister, Donice Jean Light Conner, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Jo Helms Cline and husband, Dean of Ridgeway; one son and daughter-in-law, John David Helms and wife, Nancy of Stuart; one granddaughter, Laura Bowles and husband Tom Laub of Martinsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Ellen Light of Stuart; one brother-in-law, Aubrey Conner of Christiansburg; one niece and two nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Entombment was in the Bassett Family Cemetery Mausoleum in Bassett.

INA C. HENSLEY
Ina Cochram Hensley, age 87, of Meadows of Dan, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Laurel Meadows Nursing Home in Laurel Fork.
She was born in North Carolina on August 19, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Henry and Rose
Brown Cochram. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Garner Hensley Sr.; a daughter, Sandra Russell; two sisters; and two brothers.
Surviving are two sons, Garner Hensley Jr. of Hillsville and Tim Hensley of Virginia Beach; four daughters, Linda McMann of California, Priscilla Lanphere and Mandy Russell, both of Meadows of Dan, and Crystal Norrick of Richmond; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Vera Moretz of Eden, N.C., and Evelyn Howell of South Carolina.
All services were private.
Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.
JESSIE L. KOGER
Jessie Lee Koger, 84, of Bassett, died Thursday, June 6, 2013, at his residence.
He was born in Henry County on May 28, 1929, to the late Charlie and Lilla Martin Koger and was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Crowder.
He served in the U.S. Army and worked at Bassett Mirror and then in logging.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Sadie Harbour Koger of the home; three sons, Leon "PT" Koger of Henry, Wayne "Chub" Koger of Bassett and Gary "Porky" Koger of Patrick Springs; one grandson; two great-grandsons and two stepgrandsons, one step great-granddaughter; a special nephew and other family members.
The funeral service was held Saturday at Bassett Funeral Service with Pastor John Wingfield officiating. Burial was in the Liberty Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
HERMAN O. LOGAN SR.
Herman Otis Logan Sr., age 87, of Hillsville, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at his home.
He was born May 26. 1926, in Athens, Ga., and was the only child of Audie Benjamin and Martha Virginia Peterson Logan. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Loraine Henry Logan.
He was a World War II veteran, a graduate of Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., and spent over 50 years in the life insurance business. He was an accomplished pianist and served as an avocational choir director in churches where he lived in Georgia, New Jersey and Colorado.
Surviving are three sons, William B. Logan Sr. and Herman O. Logan Jr., both of Hillsville, and John W. Logan of Gypsum, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Following a graveside service, he was buried next to his wife in the family cemetery he established at his home in Patrick County. Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Service in Mount Airy, N.C.
FRANCIS P. McGIRK
Francis Patrick McGirk, age 60, of Clearwater, Fla., passed away May 22, 2013 in Clearwater.
He was born on Nov. 3, 1952 in Altoona, Pa., to the late Francis and Ruby Hughes McGirk. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, William McGirk; seven uncles; and seven aunts.
He had worked as a auto mechanic for numerous Chevrolet dealers in the Washington, D.C. area.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Virginia McGirk; two nephews, Chip and Sean McGirk; two aunts, Shirley Hughes and Arlene Shelor; three uncles, Tommy Shelor, Herman Kellam and Bernard Terry; cousins, Deborah Durant, Noel Terry Jr., Theodore Ore Jr., Sharon Purcell, Mary Alice Plasters, Terry Shelor, James, Carey, Wanda, Evans, Sydney, and Jane Hughes, Ruby May Puckett, Joy Hart, Jeanette Gore, Brenda Crawford, Carol Keskin, Leon Howard, and Darnell Cockram.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Donnie Conner officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
