WILLIAM S. MARTIN
William Stuart "Winkey" Martin, 68, of Claudville, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends on April 30, 2012.
He was born in Patrick County on February 11, 1944 to the late Everette P. and Nannie King Martin. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Alice Hill Martin; and a brother, Everett Lee Martin.
He worked at J.P. Stevens for most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietname War and earned two Bronze Service Stars, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and sharpshooter and marksman medals.
He was a dedicated member and deacon at Slate Mountain Baptist Church in Mount Airy, NC.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Garry
Brown of Stuart; one son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Cher Martin of Stuart; four grandchildren, Tucker and Parker
Brown and Bailey and Madison Martin; one brother, Dennis Martin of Mount Airy; one brother and sister-in-law, Felix and Carole Martin of Lawrenceville, Ga., a sister-in-law, June Martin of Ararat; and a special friend, Kathleen Frye of Westfield, N.C.
A memorial service will be held today (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. at Slate Mountain Baptist Church.

DOROTHY W. MAXEY
Dorothy Ilene Webb Maxey, 71, of Collinsville, died Sunday, April 29, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Floyd County on June 7, 1940, and was a daughter of the late Jessie Thomas Webb and Gladys Young
Brown Webb. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Everett Maxey; a son, Everett Dale Maxey; a sister, Inez Hylton; and a brother, William Webb.
She retired from G.S. Industries.
Surviving are three daughters, Rhonda Holley and Janet Morgan, both of Figsboro, and Janice Taylor of Ridgeway; four sisters, Belle Hylton of Meadows of Dan, and Vivian Hylton, Martha Radford and Wilma Jean Thomas, all of Floyd; one brother, Arvin Webb of Floyd; and four grandchildren.
The funeral was held Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville. Burial was private.
CECIL COCK
Cecil Cock, 98, of Meadows of Dan, died on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at his home.
He was born August 10, 1914 to the late Joel Cock and Ruth Martin Cock.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Pauline Willis Cock; nephews and nieces Glen and Liz Cock, Odell and Wilma DeHart, Leon and Zella Cock, Irene Smith, Shelby and Miles Harris and Betsy Caito. He is also survived by several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was a rural mail carrier for 50 years and he loved to farm. He and his wife, Pauline, traveled extensively with nieces and nephews. He was a member of Bluemont Presbyterian Church where he was an elder for many years.
The Rev. Stewart Childress conducted the funeral service at Bluemont Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Burial was in the Bluemont Cemetery.

Myrtle Mae
Johnson Crump, age 78, of Pilot Mountain, N.C., died Friday, September 28, 2012, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born March 25, 1934 in Surry County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Jack Anderson
Johnson and Elizabeth Venable Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Stella Fletcher; brothers, Roy and Robert
Johnson and two infant brothers.
She retired from Spencer's of Mount Airy. After retiring she ran Nannie's Daycare. She was a member of First Church of The Brethren in Mount Airy, N.C., and was active in the VFW Post # 9436 Ladies' Auxiliary as long as health permitted.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, James Richard Crump Sr., of the home; one daughter, Doris Bowman of Ararat; sons, Dickie Crump and Jack Crump, both of Pilot Mountain; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Anderson of Mount Airy; one brother, Aubrey "Sam"
Johnson of King, N.C.; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family received friends on Sunday at Howell-Nelson Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

HERMAN B. HALL SR.
Herman Bernard Hall Sr., age 69, of Mount Airy, N.C., died on Friday evening, September 28, 2012, in Mount Airy.
He was born on September 22, 1943 to the late Sam and Annie Lee Goins Hall. He was also preceded in death by a son, Herman Bernard Hall Jr.; and brothers-in-law Meggs Hooke and Roy Lowe.
Surviving are his wife, Sharla Ann Penson Hall of the home; his children, Tina (Nate) Swaim of Dobson, N.C., Dorothy Ann Hall of Louisiana, Samuel G. Hall of the home, Christopher Hall of Mount Airy, Russell Ray Hall of Spencer, Herbert W. Hall of Collinsville, William Dale Hall of Martinsville, Terry Lee Hall of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sisters Cornelia Hubbard of Meadows of Dan, Jane Hooker of Germanton, N.C., Virginia Lawless of Patrick Springs.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

DEBRA C. OVERBY
Debra Cox Overby, 60, of Claudville, passed away Friday, September 28, 2012, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C.
She was born on November 16, 1951 in Patrick County to Ethel Rakes Cox and the late Acie G. Cox.
She was a loving wife, caring mother and grandmother, she was a very active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and had worked for over 40 years for Narroflex where she was a sales representative.
Debbie was a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was initiated into Stuart Chapter No. 25 in 1973 and immediately became a most active member. In addition to serving on a various committees and being appointed to numerous offices, she served as the Worthy Matron for her chapter and as secretary. She was recognized for her service to this Order by being appointed to various state committees.
Serving as assistant lecturer for numerous years, Debbie instructed in ritualistic work. She was furthered honored by being appointed to the state office of Grand Ruth by Worthy Grand Matron Daphene Watson during 1996-1997. When Stuart Chapter merged with Martinsville Chapter No. 66, Debbie remained active and faithful. She served again on various chapter committees and was appointed as the Star Point Adah in the Martinsville Chapter. Her love for the Order of the Eastern never diminished.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her loving husband of 40 years, Marshall Overby of Claudville, one son, Scott W. Overby of Collinsville; two grandchildren, Kailee and Caden Overby; two sisters, Tina Puckett and husband C.W. of Stuart and Sandy Palfreeman and husband Dan of Mount Airy, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Scott and Gretchen Lawson of Hillsville, Dave and Amy Reed and Katona Puckett, all of Stuart, Kenan and Kyla
Johnson and Katalin Johnson, all of Mount Airy; and a special friend, Lillian White of Virginia.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 1, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Barry Clement and Pastor Mark George officiating. The Eastern Star funeral ceremony was conducted by the Martinsville Chapter No. 66. Burial was private.

CHARLES D. STAPLES
Charles David Staples, 78, of Ridgeway, died Thursday, September 27, 2012, at his home.
He was born on April 13, 1934, in Patrick County and was a son of the late George Washington and Evelyn
Brown Staples. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Hennis Staples, in 2008, and his brother, John G. Staples.
He was a graduate of Hardin Reynolds High School and retired from Stone Container Co. with more than 35 years of service as a warehouse worker. He was a member of Ayersville Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Charles M. Staples of Ridgeway; three daughters, Teresa Hildreth of Dalton, Ga., Darlene Goodwin of Columbia, S.C., and Lynn Safley of Olin, N.C.; one sister, JoAnn Byrum of Chuckatuck.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was conducted Monday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Bird officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

HARRY W. WILSON
Harry Wayne Wilson, 71, of Ringgold, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Pittsylvania County on April 24, 1941 and was a son of the late Willie Joe Wilson and Gertrude Pruitt Wilson. He was also preceded by a son, Jeffrey Wilson; and two brothers, William J. Wilson and Lonnie Wilson.
He was a member of River of Life Church in Milton, and had worked as a store clerk.
Surviving are one son, Ricky Wilson of Sutherlin; one daughter, Tina L. Browning of Ringgold; two sisters, Nellie Barker of Axton and Mary Norman of Shallotte, N.C.; five brothers, Pete Wilson of Axton, Johnny Wilson of Martinsville, Bernard Wilson and Jack Wilson of Stuart, and Edward Wilson of Christiansburg; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Arrangements were by Barker Funeral Home in Danville.
ROBERT E. PRATT
Robert Everett Pratt, 89, of George Taylor Rd., Spencer, died Wednesday April 25, 2012, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Henry County on November 25, 1922 and was a son of the late Rosa L. Wood Pratt and John Everett Pratt. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Triplett Pratt; two sisters, Margaret P. Joyce and Ann P. Martin; and three brothers, John Edgar Pratt, Charles W. Pratt and Clyde H. Pratt.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in France and Germany where he received two Purple Hearts. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.
He worked at DuPont for over 30 years before retiring in 1989, and was a member of Old Well Christian Church. He was a charter member of the Patrick County Memorial Honor Guard.
Surviving are one son, Robert E. "Peewee" Pratt Jr. of Martinsville, two sisters, Dorothy P. Harris of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Peggy P. Hutchens of Sandy Ridge, N.C., one grandson; one stepgreat-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Saturday at Old Well Christian Church with the Rev. Zeke Zanatos officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael Mackey, Ronnie Beavers, Sam Taylor, Clyde Joyce, Zach Harris, Ricky Taylor, Barry Hutchens, Bryan Hutchens and the Spencer Ruritan Club members.

LUCILLE P. PRUITT
Lucille Pack Pruitt, age 75, of Lawsonville, N.C., died Sunday, April 29, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on September 22, 1936 to the late Harry and Mary Holt Pack. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Pruitt; a son, Gary Wayne Pruitt; and four brothers, Arthur Pack, Bill Pack, John Pack and Junior Pack.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Glenda Pruitt and Dean and Angie Pruitt, all of Lawsonville, and Randy and Rhonda Pruitt of Stuart; one daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Jeff Martin of Stuart; eight grandchildren, Jacob, Julie, Jenna and Jadyn Pruitt, Tyler Pruitt, Kalee Pruitt, Courtney and Nicholas Martin; two stepgrandchildren, Dustin and Parthenia Garlock; six sisters, Clarabell Inman, Ada Martin, Nellie Mae Pack, Betty Sue Pack, Barbara Jean Holt and Joann Holt, all of Lawsonville; two brothers, Louis Pack and Irvin Lee Pack, both of Lawsonville; a sister-in-law, Betty
Jones of Stuart; and special caregivers, Lisa Grona and Jennifer Ames.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Joe Beck and Pastor Shaun Draughn officiating. Burial will follow in Aaron's Corner Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
