JAXSON A. KEENE

Jaxson Alexander Keene, seven months old, of Collinsville, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

He was born in Eden, N.C., on August 18, 2011, to Eva Barbour of Collinsville. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Terri Lynn Keene.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his paternal grandfather, Joseph Keene of Collinsville; maternal great-grandparents, Kenneth and Cecilia Conrad of Sanville; and one brother, Cowrey Teagan of Stuart.

The funeral service was held Monday at Day Star Ministries with Pastor Sammy Cardwell officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Ashtabula, Oh.

Pallbearers were his two cousins; Raelynn and Christian Bruner.

Arrangements were by Collins Funeral Home of Bassett.

JAMES C. MINISH JR.

James Clyde "J.C." Minish Jr., age 81, of Meadows of Dan, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

He was born on May 21, 1930 in Winston-Salem, N.C., to the late James Clyde Minish Sr. and Lodemie Woodruff Minish. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Minish.

He had served in the U.S. Navy, and retired from J.P. Stevens as an industrial engineer.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Jamie and Sharon Minish of Collinsville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Beth Sauls of Charlotte, N.C., and Patricia and Thomas James of Hickory, N.C.; a longtime faithful and devoted companion, Betsy Hughes of Stuart; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; the mother of his children, Carolyn Eleen Minish of Charlotte; and one sister, Bettye Goins of Winston-Salem.

A celebration of life was held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Tommy Shepherd officiating. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Patrick County Chapter, P.O. Box 1301, Stuart, Va. 24171.

WALTER C. PAYNE

Walter Clarence Payne, age 73, of Ferrum, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

He was born in Danville on May 16, 1938 and was a son of the late Worth Clarence and Martha Junia Cain Payne. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, William Lon Payne and Kenneth Augusta Payne; and a special uncle, Benjamin Lee Cain.

He was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Suffolk, served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years, had been the owner/operator of Deer Run Campground for 23 years. He was a member of the VFW in Hillsville.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Julie V. Carroll Payne of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Lee Sr. and Alice H. Payne of Suffolk and Timothy Scott and Renea S. Payne of Woolwine; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Lynn and Barry Lynn Gay of Suffolk; five grandchildren, Barry Lynn Gay Jr., Jamie Leigh Payne, Walter Lee Payne Jr., Austin Scott Payne and Laura Ashley Payne; one great-granddaughter, Kearstin McKenna Gay; and two brothers, Ervin Wayne Payne of Slidell, La., and Archie Edward Payne of Danville.

Funeral services were held Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Entombment was held Monday at Meadow Brook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, Va. 23435 with the Rev. Ronnie Wiggins officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Smith River Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 122, Woolwine, Va. 24185.

KELSIE B. PIERSON

Kelsie Gray Bonnett Pierson, age 86, of Stuart, died Thursday, April 5, 2012.

She was born on May 12, 1925 in Clarksburg, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Roscoe "Buckshot" Bonnett and Martha Mick "Bom Bom" Bonnett. She was also preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

She was a member of Hope Baptist Church in Frametown, W.Va.

Surviving are her husband, George Burton Pierson of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Robert Reynolds of Stuart; two grandchildren, Seth and Logan Reynolds of Stuart; a special niece, Margaret Wolfe of Clarksburg; and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday at Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Allen Donaldson and Rich Demastus officiating. Burial was in the Middle Run Baptist Church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Baptist Church, HC61 Box 22, Frametown, W.Va. 26623 or to Grace Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1108, Stuart, Va. 24171.

The family was served locally by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

CARL B. WITT

Carl Bernard Witt, 80, of Fieldale, died Saturday April 7, 2012, at his residence.

He was born in Patrick County on May 20, 1931 and was a son of the late Madgie Earls Witt and Charlie Price Witt. He was also preceded in death by six brothers; Stafford Witt, Paul Witt, James Witt ,Bill Witt, Ken Witt and Bug Witt; and a sister, Violet Stout.

He retired from Fieldcrest Mills as a weaver after 45 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee Clifton Witt of the home; one daughter, Bonnylee S. Witt of Fieldale; one son, Ricky Carl Witt of High Point, N.C.; two sisters, Virginia Wolf and Jean Thomas, both of Bassett; one brother, Ronnie Witt of Critz.; one granddaughter, Candice Lee Otey of Charlotte, N.C.; and two daughters-in-law.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel in Martinsville by Minister John Patrick Clifton. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

DONALD R. CORN

Donald Ray Corn, age 71, of Ararat, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Surry County, N.C., on May 30, 1940, to James Henry and Thelma Lucille York Corn. In addition to his parents, Mr. Corn was preceded in death by his first wife, Annie Mae Hall Corn; sisters, Linda Jones, Shirley Jones and Henrietta Mosley and a brother, Rev. Junior Corn.

He served our country in the United States Air Force and was retired from Spencer's Inc. and Food Lion.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen Luckado Corn of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Scott Marion of Ararat; a son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Engle Corn, also of Ararat; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Michael and Charlotte Luckado of Ararat; grandchildren, Ryan Marion and Elizabeth Corn; and stepgrandchildren, Gracie and Elizabeth Luckado.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2012, at Believers Baptist Church by the Revs. Dewayne Sands and Steven Corn. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Believers Baptist Church Youth Fund at 288 Homeplace Rd., Ararat, VA 24053.

JOEY A. GAMMONS

Joey Allen Gammons, age 47, of Axton, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

He was born in Martinsville on December 19, 1964, and was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Edward Gammons.

He attended Trinity Baptist Church and was an automobile body frame specialist. He was well known as a local and regional musician and entertainer.

Surviving are his mother, Betty "Evelean" Lawson Gammons of Martinsville; his fiancée, Teresa Edwards of Axton; one sister, Lisa Gammons Rogers and her husband Howard of Lawsonville, N.C.; and a niece and nephew, Meagan and Dillon Rogers.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Tommy Nichols officiating. Burial was private.

Pallbearers were Tony Lawson, Dillon Rogers, Tracy Childress, Andy Lawson, Mitch Hull and Howard Rogers.

Memorial donations may be made to the Joey Gammons Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 307, Stuart, Va. 24171.

EDITH C. HYLTON

Edith Ruth Conner Hylton, age 84, of Meadows of Dan, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.

She was born in Patrick County on January 22, 1928 and was a daughter of the late John Thomas Conner and Pearlie Rakes Conner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Clifford Hylton; and a grandson, Jason Ellis Biggs.

She attended Vesta Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Annabel Howell of Stuart and Linda Biggs of Critz; one son, George Hylton Jr. of Ararat; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Vesta Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Jonathan Goins officiating. Burial was in the Boyd-Lewis cemetery.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

ILA W. KIDD

Ila Fern Weddle Kidd, 82, of Martinsville, died Monday, April 23, 2012, at Blue Ridge Manor in Martinsville.

She was born in Floyd County on April 26, 1929, and was a daughter of the late Newton Weddle and Treva Boone Weddle. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Weddle, Evelyn Guilliams and Margaret Largen; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

She had worked in the packing department at Pannill Knitting Co. and in the cleaning department at Central Storage. She was a member of Cascade Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, James Otis Kidd of Martinsville; two daughters, Jane Hall of Stuart and Lucy Luongo of Wisconsin; one son, Barry Kidd of Martinsville; four brothers, Joe Weddle and Paul Weddle, both of Cascade, Ray Weddle of Floyd and Rudy Weddle of South Carolina; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Friday at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville by the Rev. Haywood Alcorn. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

Pallbearers were Ricky Hall, Bryan Hall, Tyler Hall, Gary Weddle, Johnny Weddle, Alan Hancock, Kevin Parker, Dale Moore, David Reynolds and Dennis Johnston.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 3907, Martinsville, Va. 24115.

CLAUDE E. MARTIN

Claude Everett Martin, 84, of Evergreen Drive, Spencer, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

He was born in Critz on December 25, 1927, and was a son of the late Charlie Martin and Mattie Kendrick Martin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Martin; a stepdaughter, Robin Harris; a stepson, Mike Ramey; a sister, Grace Martin; two brothers, Clarence and William Martin; a niece and a nephew.

He served with the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II; retired from Hamco Apparel as shipping room supervisor with more than 30 years of service; and was a member of and usher at Critz Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Eddins of Spencer; one son, Timothy Martin of Spencer; one sister, Ethel Coleman of Spencer; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Friday at Critz Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Hackler officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Horsepasture Rescue Squad, 18287 A.L. Philpott Highway, Ridgeway, Va. 24148.

Arrangements were by Community Funeral Service in Ridgeway.
