November 3, 1897 - Last night at 6 o'clock MISS LILLIAN MAY SHANE, aged 14 years, daughter of the late Richard R. SHANE and Mrs. Ida B. Berryman, died at the residence of her grandfather, Mr. William Stroud on Fayette Street, Brighton. The remains will be shipped to Surry county tomorrow for interment. Miss May was a birght and attractive young lady, and in her death a shining light has been extinguished in the paths she was wont to trod. Thus in the springtime of life, when nature extended every promise, she was compelled to obey the call of the Master who hath said, "Suffer little children to come unto me, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." November 4, 1897 - FUNERAL: The remains of the late Miss Lillian May Shane were shipped on the steamer Pocahontas this moring for Bacon Castle, Surry county, Va. The funeral took place from Bacon Castle Baptist Church, Rev. T. B. Sheppard, pastor, this afternoon at 3 o'clock. At the conclusion of the solemn services the remains were borne to their resting place in the family burying ground. The following gentlemen were pall-bearers: Luther Green, Roland King, Thomas King and Frank King.
November 4, 1897 - The Grim Reaper - There were many sad hearts in the city [Portsmouth] today when the announcement of the death of MRS. ROSA BILISOLY, wife of Dr. L. Aug. Bilisoly, became known. The sad event occurred at the residence of her husband, No. 302 Middle street, at 3 o'clock this morning, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Bilisoly was born in the Citty of Baltimore May 2d, 1836, and had been a resident of this city for the past forty-three years. She was the daughter of William and Nancy MILLS and was 61 years and 6 months old at the time of her death. The deceased leaves four children, Mrs. James W. Brown, Jr., Mrs. James A. Borum, Miss Lucile Bilisoly and Dr. A. A. Bilisoly. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock from St. Paul's Chapel. November 5, 1897 FUNERAL: The funeral of Mrs. Rosa Bilisoly, wife of Dr. L. Aug. Bilisoly, took place from the family residence, No. 203 Middle street, this morning at 11 o'clock and was largely attended by friends and relatives of the deceased. Rev Father T.J. Brady of St. Paul's Catholic church, conducted the last sad and solemn services, at the conclusion of which the remains were borne to the hearse and conveyed to their last resting plact in Oak Grove Cemetery. The floral tributes were numerous and hadsome, one of them, from Mrs. Levy's in Norfolk, being exceedingly beautiful. The following gentlemen were the pall-bearers: William Riddick, Nash Bilisoly, Walter Bilisoly, G. Edwards, Morris Hudgins, Henry Hudgins, Frank Lindsay and Carroll Cook.
September 11, 1898 - Sunday - As a result of the carelss handling of a revolver GEORGE L. CRUSER, aged 28 years, shot himself yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock and died at St. Vincent's Hospital where he was promptly taken for treatment, at 6:30 p.m., having never regained consciousness after the bullet sruck him. Mr. Cruser, who was well-known in his neighborhoon, having lived on Church sreet extended, was in he saloon of N. B. Joynes, at the corner of Church and Calvert sreets about 3 o'clock and picked up a revolver which someone laid upon the bar couner, and from which it was supposed all the cartridges had been removed, when, in handling it, there was an explosion, and Cruser was shot in the right eye. He was instantly picked up and taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in the ambulance of that institution, where he received surgical attention, which was quite unavailing, the bulle having penetated his brain, and from which he died at 6:30 o'clock. The funeral will occur from the Christian Memorial Temple, Brambleton, at 3 o'clock p.m. today. December 13, 1898 - FUNERAL - The funeral of Mr.GEORGE L. CRUSER, the young an who accidentally shot himself Saturday afternoon, took place yesterday afternoon a 3 o'clock from the Christian Memorial Temple in he presence of a large number of friends and sorrowing relatives. The rev. J.P. Barrett conducted the servics and the remains were laid away in Elmwood.[cemetery]
December 10, 1898 - The many friends of Mr. JOHN E. WEST, a well-known and highly respected citizen of Portsmouth, were deeply grieved to learn of his death, which occurred yesterday morning at 11 o'clock at his home, No. 225 Fourth Street. Mr. West had reached the advanced age of 71 years and during his long residence in this city enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all with whom he came into contact. He was a Christian gentleman and performed life's duties in a manner that characterized him as a conscienious and God-fearing man. For many years Mr. West was a member of Wright Memorial M. E. Church, occupying, until he time of his death, the position of rustee, which office he had formerly filled in old Second Street M.E. Church. Mr. West was a contractor by occupaion and many of the best buildings, public and private, in the city were ereced under his supervision. He leaves a widow, a sister of Mr. W. B. Thomas and Mrs. L. P. Slater, to mourn their loss. The funeral services will take place at Wright Memorial M. E. Church, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Funeral - 12/13/1898 Tuesday - Sunday afternoon Wright Memorial M.E. Church was filled with sorrowing friends and relatives to pay the last sad tribute of respect to the memory of one of Portsmouth's well-known citizens, Mr. JOHN E. WEST, who had reached the ripe age of 71 years. Mr. West was a well known contractor, reliable in all his dealings, respected by all classes. The funeral services being held in an edifice erected under his supervision, were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Blankenship, and the Rev. W. H. Edwards, of Centenary M.E. Church, Norfolk, former pastor of Central. The tex was Romans, 8th Chapter, 28th verse: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God." At the conclusion of the solemn services the remains were interred in Oak Grove Cemetery, the following gentlemen acting as pall-bearers: Active: C. A. McLean, John J. King, A.P. Cuthrell, L. L. Martin, F. Roans, C.N. Moody, E. P. Adams, A. E. Cherry. Honorary: George T. Townsend, Edward Powell, A. C. Bushnell, E. Cross, John T. King, W. F. White, William Elliot, K. R. Griffin. Then was laid to rest all hat was mortal of a kind husband loving broher and generous friend.
December 11, 1898 - Died: ROSS - At No. 73 High stret, at 7:20 a.m. on December 9th MARGARET EMILY [ROSS], the youngst daughter of John R. and Julia F. Ross. Her remains were interred the same day in Elmwood cemetery. An Affecting Incident: Margaret Emily, the youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs.John R. Ross, died and her remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery the sam day. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Father Wilson, of the Sacred Heart. An effecting incident occurred at the grave. Before covering with he earth, the lid of the coffin was removed so as to enable the relatives and friends to look at her for the last time. A little neice of hers, about the same age, pressed forward, called lustily upon the deceased by endearing names and begged the grave-diggers not to throw dirt on her.
December 11, 1898 - Died: TEBAULT -- Suddenly, at the residence of her sister, in Suffolk, Va., at 4:30 o'clock yesterday morning, of heart failure, Mrs. SELINA S. TEBAULT, widow of the late Benjamin F. Tebault, in the 63d year of her age. The funeral will take place Monday, December 12th, at 12 p.m. from her late residence on Olney Road, Ghent. ----- The funeral of Mrs. Selina Tebault, of Norfolk, who died yesterday morning at the home of her sister, Mrs. Jennie Briggs, will occur tomorrow at 12 o'clock noon from the residence of her son-in-law, Mayor C. Brooks Johnston, Olney road, Ghent. Mrs. Tebault was the widow of Mr. Benjamin F. Tebault and was highly esteemed in all the relations of life. Her children are Mr. Richard E. Tebault and Mrs. C. Brooks Johnston, and they, with Mayor Johnston, went to Suffolk yesterday morning on learning of their mother's death, which occurred at 5:30 a.m., that day, after a very brief and sudden illness. Her remains were brought to Norfolk yesterday and taken to the residence of Mayor Johnson.
December 13, 1898 - Late yesterday afternoon a colored man named HARVEY PURVIS came in fom his home, in Princess Anne County, with a load for market. He put his cart in Mr. Ryland Malbon's shed, on Charlotte Steet. Last night about 8 o'clock he was taken sick and was sent across the street, where he died about an hour later. Cornor Newton was notified and will hold an inquest this morning. the ody was sent to the police station to be kep in the morgue, but as there had been wo small-pox patients in here very recently, the police determined not to put the body there. I remained in front of the sation an hour or so, and was finally turned over o Underaker Wilson.
December 13, 1898 - Mrs. EMMA F. WILKINS, relict of he late Nahan Wilkins, died at her home, No 127 Gibbs Avenue, yesterday moning at 2:30 o'clock, aged 63 years. Her funeral will take place from the above residence this afternoon at 3 o'clock.
January 3, 1899 Mrs. FANNIE V. MILLER The obsequies of this most estimable and highly esteemed lady, whose demise occurred at her home, Two Penny Point, Princess Anne county, last Thursday, was held from Haygood Methodist M.E. church at 11 o'clock Sunday morning, and despite the condition of the weather and roads there was a large attendance. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. A.A. Jones. The floral tributes were very handsome, among them a large wreath sent by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, of which deceased was an active and zealous member. her sleeping dust was laid to rest in the church Cemetery, beside her husband. Following were the pall-bearers: Colonel Harry Hodges, Messrs. W. N. Grubb, John W. Buchanan, Joseph E. Ewell, William James and William E. Biddle.
January 3, 1899 The obsequies of MR. CHARLES A. EVANS, who died on Saturday, took place from the residence of his brother, MR. Frank P. Evans, No. 126 Wood street, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The services were conducted by the Rev. Father Doherty, of St. Mary's Catholic church. The interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. There was a very handsome display of floral offerings. Following were the pall-bearers: John T. Myers, R.H. Mapp, H. L. Eustis, John A. Butt, Stephen O' Connor, W. S. Capps, Samuel Morrow and M. Pollard.
January 3, 1899 The funeral of Mrs. EMMA C. SAVELLS, wife of MR. Seth Savells, whose death occurred last Friday, was held from St. Luke's P.E. Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. A.S. Lloyd. Interment in Elmwood Cemetery. Following were the pall bearers: Robert Etheridge, A.W. Spruill, A.L. Jones, J.C. White, John Berry and George Kegebein.
January 3, 1899 The venerable Mrs. ELIZABETH FITCHETT, who fractured her hip in a fall she sustained about a week ago, died from the effect of her injuries at the residence of MR. R.S. Holland, No. 19 Clay Street, at 1 o'clock p.m. Sunday, aged 87 years. the deceased leaves several children, all grown, and a number of grandchildren. her funeral was solemnized from Queen Street M.E. church, South at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The services were conducted by pastor, Rev. Samuel C. Hatcher, assisted by Rev. Dr. J.P. Barrett, of Christian Memorial Temple and Rev. J. B. Merritt, of the Seamen's Bethel. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. Following were the pall-bearers: Messrs: S. N. Brickhouse, James Hamburg, C.R. Dozier, James Petree, James T. Holland, T. E. Nugent and Mr. Cason.
January 3, 1899 Mrs. VIRGINIA ANN BROWN, relict of the late Captain Edward Brown, departed this life at her home on Third street, Atlantic City Ward, at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, at the ripe age of 77 years. The funeral was held from LeKies Memorial M.E. church, South, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The pastor, Rev. W.T. Williams, conducted the services assisted by Rev. E.E. Dudley, of Central Avenue-Baptist church. The remains were laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery.
January 3, 1899 MR. LUCIUS M. MERRITT died at St. Vincent's Hospital at 5 o'clock a.m. yesterday after an illness of brief duration, being sick only since last Friday. He was removed from his home to the hospital Sunday. The deceased was 40 years of age, and is survived by a widow. He was a clerk in the office of the United states Shipping company, Columbia building. The funeral will take place from the residence, No. 339 Duke street, at 3 o'clock this afternoon
January 3, 1899 The universal sorrow felt on account of the sad and tragic death of MR. WILLIAM K. FERGUSON of Atlantic City, was plainly visible at the funeral held at Colley Memorial Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, the building being filled to its utmost capacity by friends of the deceased from all parts of the city, who assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to one who in life endeared himself to all with whom he was associated. Many of his old comrades in arms during the late war were present. The services were conducted by pastor Rev. C. W. Maxwell, assisted by Rev. Dr. H.E.
Johnson of Cumberland Street M.E. church, and Rev. W. T.
Williams of LeKies Memorial.
January 4, 1899 Death of an Esteemed and Honored Citizen. WINDSOR, VA. Jan 3 -- MR. JOHN M. GAY, one of the most esteemed and honored citizens of this community, died at his home near this place last night, in the 63rd year of his age. MR. GAY had been sick just three weeks, and the end came as a result of a severe attack of pneumonia. Deceased had been three times married, leaving a widow and eight children, all of which are about grown, the youngest being seventeen and several grandchildren. MR. GAY was a very successful business man, and had by his shrewd and keen business capacity, accumulated an estate valued at about $30,000. He was kind hearted and of a generous disposition; a good neighbor, honored citizens, kind and tender father and faithful and devoted husband. He was genial in disposition, and had a host of friends. He will e sadly missed in the community. Funeral and burial tomorrow (Wednesday) evening from Antioch Christian church at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dr. Staley and Rev. H.H. Butler, both of Suffolk. Peace to his ashes.
