BRYANT
Dorothy Belvin Bryant, age 74, departed this life on Tuesday, May 8, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Bryant; one daughter, Patricia Ann Bryant of Richmond; one brother, Thomas Edward Belvin and sister-in-law, May of Williamsburg; and six nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Westhampton Baptist Church. A reception immediately to follow in the church fellowship hall. The family will not be receiving flowers. As Mrs. Bryant was a lifelong animal lover, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Henrico Humane Society, P.O. Box 28014, Richmond, Va. 23228; or to the Westhampton Baptist Church, 6112 Three Chopt Road, Richmond, Va. 23226.

CALL
Joseph B. Call Jr., 83, of Richmond, died May 8, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Allen Call; children, Jay B. Call III, Ethan Allen Call, Stephanie C. Childrey, Tommy S. Call, Babette C. Whitney, Nan C. Wilson, Billy Call, Patricia C. Golden, Linda C. Trumble and Lydia Call; 22 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. During WWII as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Mr. Call was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for wounds received and for heroic achievement in action in the face of imminent danger while serving with the 411th Regiment of the 103rd Infantry Division near Strasbourg, France, in 1944. He was founder of J.B. Call Jr. & Co. Inc., a local real estate sales and appraisal firm formed in 1953. He pioneered the restoration and renovation of Fan District homes in the 1950s and was the former director of the Richmond Association of Realtors. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, the Country Club of Virginia, James R. Goodloe Hunt Club, the Sons of the Revolution and captain of the crew of the Virginia Boat Club. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Hollywood Cemetery.

CARR
Vernell Ayscue Carr, 87, of Doswell, the widow of Wallace Carr, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001. She is survived by a brother, Sandros J. "Sandy" Ayscue; three sisters, Edith Fry, Erma Nold and Joyce Gwathney; also Larry Carr and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday in Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Beaverdam, Va., with burial in the churchyard, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Memorial gifts may be made to the Doswell Volunteer Rescue Squad. Reid Funeral Home, Ashland, assisting the family.

CARTER
Robert Terrell Carter, age 81, of Richmond, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at home. He was the owner of Pitchfords Dry Cleaners, from which he retired after 30 years of service. He was a member and former vestryman of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He served in WWII as a captain in the Signal Corps. He was a member of the Sons of American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and was a past commodore of the Virginia Power Boat Association. Survivors include his wife, Rebekah West Carter; one daughter, Patricia Carter Wilson; one son, Gregory Warren Carter; one sister, Eleanor Rodgers; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 11, at 11 a.m. in the parlor of Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity or the Virginia Home in memory of Virginia West.

CHAPPELL
Rachel Martin Chappell, 79, of Beaverdam, formerly of Glen Allen, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001. She is survived by her husband, John F. Chappell, a sister, Pauline Gibson of Tappahannock. Mrs. Chappell was a charter member of Goodwill Baptist Church and a retired employee of the State of Virginia, with 40 years of service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Missions Fund of Immanuel Baptist Church.

CRUMP
John Allen Crump of 1805 N. 29th St. died May 8, 2001. A funeral service will be held 12 noon Friday, May 11, 2001 at Crawley Funeral Home Chapel, 3810 Meadowbridge Road. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.

DeVOE
Ellen Apperson DeVoe, widow of Garner A. DeVoe, died May 8, 2001, in Oxford, Miss. She is survived by two sons, Garner H. DeVoe of Oxford, Miss., and James A. DeVoe of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She graduated from St. Margaret's School and Martha Washington College. Mrs. DeVoe was an active part of the Ginter Park Community for over 80 years and served St. Thomas Episcopal Church loyally during her life. A graveside service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 3602 Hawthorne Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23222.

DODSON
E. Griffith Dodson Jr., 87, of Roanoke, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2001. He was born in Norfolk, Va., February 11, 1914, the eldest son of E. Griffith Dodson and Harriotte Winchester Dodson. His earliest education was received in the Norfolk public schools and at the Norfolk Academy. Following his graduation from the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., he attended the University of Virginia, where he lettered in football and track and received his B.A. and LL.B. degrees in 1937. In his last year of law school, he teamed with his classmate, Harvey T. Hall Jr. of Roanoke, to win the Moot Court Competition. He was married to Mary Archer "Molly" Talcott of Richmond, Va., October 26, 1940, and three children were born of their marriage, Dr. Archer D. Heinzen of Alexandria, Va., Harriotte D. McDannald of Perry, Ga., and E. Griffith Dodson III of Coatesville, Pa. They were later blessed with six grandchildren, Mary Archer, Hunt, Stearns, Molly, Harriotte, Julie and Grif IV. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Winchester Dodson of Elizabeth City, N.C. He began his career as a lawyer in Roanoke as an associate in the firm of Cocke, Hazlegrove & Shackelford. He was one of the organizers and the first president of the Roanoke Jaycees. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve, trained at Cornell University where he was commissioned an ensign, and in the course of his service advanced to the rank of lieutenant. He served successively as gunnery officer, executive officer and commanding officer of a 110 foot subchaser from Miami to New Guinea and the Philippines. In 1947, he opened his own law office and a year later joined with Judge Richard F. Pence to organize the law firm team known as Dodson, Pence & Coulter. He was elected as a delegate from the City of Roanoke to the Virginia House of Delegates, served in the sessions of 1948, 1950 and 1952, and chose not to run for reelection. He served as the Roanoke campaign chairman for Adlai E. Stevenson and state chairman for Sen. Armistead Boothe in the latter's Democratic primary campaign for the U.S. Senate. He was president of the Roanoke Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. He served on the Vestry and as senior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church under three rectors. His civic activities included service as chairman of the Board of the Roanoke Guidance Center and Mental Health Services of the Roanoke Valley. In 1995, he was selected as Roanoke's Father of the Year in the Field of Religious Activities. Among his close lifelong friends were Dr. Randolph Garnett of Norfolk, Va., Robert Train of Macon, Ga., Sen. Armistead Boothe of Alexandria, Va., Robert H. Daniel of Royal Oak, Md., and Robert B. Claytor of Roanoke and Norfolk, all of whom predeceased him. His hobbies were gardening, an interest derived from his mother, and sailing, which he shared with his father. Over the years, he and his wife cruised many rivers and tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay in their 27 foot sailboat. Memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, at St. John's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a memorial gift may make it to St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 257, Roanoke, Va. 24002-0257. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

FOWLER
Eugene Arnold Fowler, age 74, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Lenora P. Fowler; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sara and Charles Reese, Janet and Gary Holder, all of Richmond; two grandchildren, Sandra McLaughlin of Virginia Beach, Melanie Baribeault of Georgia; one sister, Mildred Stevens of Florida. Mr. Fowler was a retired employee of the Federal Aviation Administration at the Richmond International Airport. A veteran of WWII and Korean War. The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. and where services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Henrico County Volunteer Rescue Squad.

FRAZIER
Jeffrey Brian Frazier, 34, of Richmond, beloved husband, son and brother, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 7, 2001. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jennifer Lynn Frazier and is survived by his wife, Aricia Frazier; a stepson, Jamie; his parents, Tom and Phyllis Frazier; a brother, John Frazier; maternal grandparents, Jack and Beatrice Eversole of Florida; and aunt and uncle, Sylvia and Jim Hammond of Florida; a cousin and his wife, Todd and Julie Hammond. Jeff was a 1990 graduate of Randolph Macon College and a very successful area business manager for Chiron Pharmaceutical Corporation. His strong spirit, beautiful soul, courage and presence will be terribly missed by all who love him; he made this world a better place to live. His family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2001 at West End Assembly of God Church, 401 Parham Road. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. GILBERT
Esther Strange Gilbert, 104, of Carson, Va., formerly of Richmond, widow of Robert (Alex) Gilbert, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in the Avis Adams Nursing Home, Emporia, Va. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William Lawrence and Barbara Gilbert of Carson, Va.; her daughter, Phyllis Thomas of Austin, Texas; daughter-in-law, Joyce G. McCoy; five grandchildren, Brenda G. Moser of Chester, Va., Larry K. Gilbert of Carson, Gerald Wayne Gilbert of Ruther Glen, Darryl and Kelvin Gilbert of Richmond; 13 great-grandchildren; and four nieces. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church and a retired employee of Miller & Rhoads Department Store. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday (today) in Forest Lawn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Village Presbyterian Church, 110 N. Departed this life May 6, 2001, Mrs. Veraline M. Green of 409 S. Stafford Ave. She is survived by two sisters, Evelyn L. Minor and Lorraine E. Johnson; three brothers, James B., Paul E. and Eugene Marks; one aunt, Eva Mabry; several nieces, nephews and cousins; four sisters-in-law, Madames Della, Naomi, Rebecca and Linda Marks; one brother-in-law, Deacon Thomas Minor; and other relatives and friends, among them members of Mary C. Stewart #128 OES and her devoted friends of 1611 4th Avenue. She retired from Nabisco. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue. Funeral Friday, 1 p.m., Sixth Baptist Church, corner of Idewood Avenue and Addison Street, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Dr. Yvonne J. Bibbs (pastor) officiating. HAYES
Phebe Elizabeth (Thresher) Hayes, 77, formerly of Plainville, Mass., died May 9, 2001, following a protracted illness. She was the widow of Robert W. Hayes Sr. Mrs. Hayes was born June 3, 1923, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of the late Clifford E. and Phebe W. (Bray) Thresher of Pawtucket, R.I. She was educated in the Pawtucket schools and was a 1944 graduate of Rhode Island State College, now the University of Rhode Island. She also attended the URI Extension Program, Providence College and Brown University. Mrs. Hayes was a home economics teacher for 32 years, the last 20 of which were at Slater Junior High School in Pawtucket, R.I. She retired in 1984. She was active in many organizations. Mrs. Hayes was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, a Past Matron of Seekonk Chapter 209, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Angle Stone Chapter 118, Order of the Eastern Star of North Attleboro, Mass., and a 50-year member of the Grand Chapter OES. She was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, a life member of Sigma Kappa sorority, and a past president of the J.E. McNeill American Legion Auxiliary of Plainville. She also was active in the Plymouth Bay Girl Scout Council and served as a Brownie Girl Scout troop leader. Mrs. Hayes was a member of the AARP Retired Teacher Division, the National Education Association, the URI Alumnae Association and the Good Sam Camping Club. She is survived by her son, CW3 Robert W. Hayes Jr., Virginia Army National Guard of Mechanicsville; her daughter, Sgt. 1st Class, Gail A. Sullivan, U.S. Army (retired) of Hinesville, Ga.; a grandson, Spc. William Sullivan, U.S. Army, stationed in Georgia; two brothers, Clifford E. Thresher Jr. of Wakefield, R.I., and Henry A. Thresher of Warwick, R.I.; several nieces and nephews. Per her instructions, cremation will be followed by interment at the family plot in the Plainville Cemetery in a private ceremony. Calling hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes. Society or the American Heart Association.

HEPLER
Mary Branch Hepler, 98, of Richmond, widow of Arthur L. Hepler, died Sunday, May 6, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Jane Hepler of Annapolis, Maryland; her son Arthur Clinton Hepler, of Pomfret, Maryland; three grandchildren, John, William, and Lianne Hepler; two nieces, Frances Darden and Jane Gray Kibler of Glen Allen. Mrs. Hepler attended Westhampton College and Smithdale-Massey Business School. She worked in the accounting department of the R F & P Railroad, and later served as Executive Director for the Hopewell Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, Hopewell, Va. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Avenue, where the family will receive friends 6-8:30 Wednesday and 9-10:30 Thursday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the First United Methodist Church of Hopewell.

HEWETT
Mr. Virgil Frazier Hewlett, salesman, age 47, of Sheffield Dr., Evans, Ga., husband of Mrs. Jean Hewlett, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at the residence. Funeral services will be held at Platt's Crawford Ave. Chapel, Augusta, Ga., on Friday, May 11, 2001 at 10 a.m., with Rev. John C. Jagoditsch Jr. officiating. Additional services will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2001 at 3 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., Glen Allen, Va. 23060. Burial will follow in Westhampton Memorial Park, Richmond, Va. Additional survivors include three sons, William Reeves Hewlett, Matthew Frazier Hewlett and Alexander Wrayton Neal Hewlett, all of Evans, Ga.; one sister, Patricia Hewlett Pryor of Goochland, Va. A native of Richmond, Va., Mr. Hewlett worked in sales with Hoover Treated Wood Products. If so desired, memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, Ga. 30909.
