Wurnwood Barrow

CHESAPEAKE -- Wurnwood ``Bill" Barrow, 74, of the 1700 block of Spar St., died Aug. 29, 1999, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News.

Mr. Barrow is survived by his wife, Daisy Barrow; a daughter, Patsy Sykes, both of Newport News; two sons, Jefferson Barrow and Douglas Barrow, both of Chesapeake; a brother, Calvin Barrow; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Piney Grove Disciple Church, Columbia, N.C. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc.

Ernest S. Estes

CHESAPEAKE -- Ernest Saunders Estes, 46, of the 1000 block of Rowland Ave., died Sept. 2, 1999, in Chesapeake after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Norfolk, he was a retired self-employed brick layer and a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Trixie Brooks Estes; two daughters, Janel Estes Moore and her husband, Michael, and Denee Estes; two sons, Michael Estes and Jamas Estes; a sister, Sandra Harbor; four brothers, Phil Estes Sr. and his family, Bobby Swanner, Mike Swanner and Jeff Swanner; and a granddaughter, Brianna Moore, all of Chesapeake.

A funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by Dr. Dennis Culbreth. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service and the residence at all other times. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vision 2000 Fund of South Norfolk Baptist Church, 1101 Chesapeake Ave., Chesapeake, VA 23324.

Perlie M. Holliday

CHESAPEAKE -- Perlie M. .``Pappy" Holliday, 75, a longtime resident of Chesapeake, died Sept. 1, 1999.

Born in Jamesville, N.C., Mr. Holliday was a retired tack welder from Ford Motor Co. He was Pentecostal by faith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary C. Holliday; four daughters, Gloria M. Osborne and her husband, Douglas, Barbara H. Wickrowski and her husband, Paul, Diane Bryant and her husband, Ronnie, all of Chesapeake, and Robin G. Watts and her husband, Richard, of Knotts Island, N.C.; a son, Jerry W. Holliday and his wife, Ronda, of Suffolk; two brothers, Freddy Holliday and Marvin Holliday, both of North Carolina; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Spencer Pope

CHESAPEAKE -- Spencer Pope, 87, of the 4100 block of Williamson St., entered into eternal rest Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999. He was born in Tilley, N.C., and was employed at the Naval Shipyard for 33 years until his retirement in 1975.

He was a member of Cathedral of Faith Church of God in Christ and he held membership in the Buck's Hunting Club since 1979.

He was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Martha Lee Pope. He is survived by two daughters, Tanya R. Pope of Chesapeake and Penney King Vaughan of Norfolk; one son, Lewiston M. Pope of New York; grandchildren, Martha L. Hoffler of Norfolk, Larry D. McNeil of California, Christian, Montrell and Jasmine Vaughan, all of Norfolk; a great-granddaughter, Rosalyn Colyer of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a host of great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cathedral of Faith Church of God in Christ. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at 4131 Williamson St.

Willie Wilson

CHESAPEAKE -- Willie Wilson, 81, of the 1100 block of Longridge Road, died Aug. 31, 1999, at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Born in Norfolk County, he was a retired wharf builder from Norfolk Naval Base and an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Wilson was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Chesapeake, where he was a member of the Deacon Board. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge Providence No. 189 and Green Leaf Male Chorus.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Wilson; a daughter, Kathy Wilson Filhiol of Chesapeake; a sister, Julia D. Burke of Chesapeake; three brothers, Abraham Wilson of Virginia Beach, Joseph Dey of Chesapeake and Otha Dey of Plainfield, N.J.; and many other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Robert Happer. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home is in charge.

Audrey B. Clark

NORFOLK -- Audrey B. Clark, 70, of the 400 block of W. 27th St., died Aug. 31, 1999. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gideon's Riverside Fellowship Church. The family will assemble at 401 Poplar Hall Circle, Norfolk, at 10 a.m. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.

Charles C. Paige

NORFOLK -- Charles C. ``Chuck" Paige of the 2400 block of Myrtle Ave. was called home to be with his Lord Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999. He was a native of Norfolk and the son of the late William H. and Emma Cuffee Paige.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street. Mr. Paige was employed as a dormitory director at Norfolk State University and had worked as an administrator for the city of Norfolk in the Model Cities Program and Human Services Department for 17 years. Additionally, he had worked in the aeronautics industry during the development of the Apollo space program.

He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and West Virginia State College. He was a devoted member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Derwick L. Paige and his wife, Teraya, and Renwick A. Paige and his wife, Wendy; two sisters, Ruth P. Garris and Shirley P. Evans; and four grandchildren, Chris, Jordan, Renwick II and Tristan. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, 418 E. Bute St., by Dr. Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Riddick Funeral Service. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will be placed in the church at 9:15 a.m. Saturday. The procession will leave 2731 Beachmont Ave. at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Katherine Randall

PORTSMOUTH -- Katherine .Randall of the 100 block of Webster Ave. died Aug. 30, 1999. She was the widow of William Randall Jr. and a member of Philadelphia Church of God In Christ.

Survivors include eight daughters, Delois Askew, Bettie Graham, Angela Braswell, Barbara Randall, Miriam Randall, Niriam Randall, Junoita Perry and Shavon Randall; three sisters; one brother; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. The family will assemble at 138 Webster Ave.

A.W. Arline

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A.W. ``Woody" Arline, beloved brother of Bea, made his transition in Greenville, N.C., on Aug. 27, 1999.

He was preceded in life eternal by his parents, Meg and Woodie Arline Sr.; his brother, Dr. Jim Arline; and his Aunt ``Do" Gainfort. Formerly of Raleigh, Baltimore, and Richmond, Woody lived in Virginia Beach with his brother-in-law Chuck Weigand and nephew Ryan. He is also survived by his other nephews and nieces, Chris, Patrick, Katherine and Rebecca; and sister-in-law, Sherry Arline.

A private memorial service officiated by his sister, the Rev. Bea Arline, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. Friends are invited to join the family afterward at 2 p.m. at 1725 N. Woodhouse in Virginia Beach for a time of remembrance and celebration of his life.

Blessed be Woody. You are loved and missed.

Nelly V. Diez

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Nelly V. Diez, 52, died Sept. 2, 1999, in a local hospital.

She was born in Lima, Peru, on March 23, 1947, to the late Consuelo and Benjamin Santin. She was a retouch artist for Life Touch.

She is survived by her husband, Ernesto Diez; two daughters, Jacqueline Placchetti and her husband, Paul, and Katherine L. Diez, all of Virginia Beach; a sister, Mery Heykoop of Lodi, N.J.; and a grandson, Sean Paul Placchetti.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church by Fr. Philip Ghys O.S.B. Burial will be at sea. The family will be at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lorene Johnson

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lorene Johnson, 75, of the 600 block of Kenneth Road, Woodstock, Ga., and formerly of Virginia Beach, passed away Aug. 30, 1999, at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper, Ga. She was retired from the city of Virginia Beach public school system.

Survivors include two daughters, Luanne Grissom of Woodstock, Ga., and Jeanne Coxe of Raleigh, N.C.; four sons, Allan Johnson of Chesapeake, James V. Johnson and Michael Johnson, both of Virginia Beach, and Tim Johnson of Chesapeake; a sister, Elsie Tilden of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Keith Burkinshaw of Mitchell, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a niece, Linda Wickline of Chesapeake.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is in charge.

James W. McCoy

VIRGINIA BEACH -- James Walter McCoy, 78, of the 3500 block of Faraday Lane, died Sept. 2, 1999.

Born in Camden County, N.C., Mr. McCoy was a retired inspector from Ford Motor Co. after 45 years of service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by five sisters, Marjorie Salmon of Moyock, N.C., Thelma Lee of Virginia Beach, Louise Bowden of Chesapeake, Dorothy Cooksey of Chesapeake and Barbara Guill of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Charles McCoy of Virginia Beach, William McCoy of Cleveland, Tenn., and Herman McCoy of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews, including Scott McCoy and Janie McCoy, both of Virginia Beach.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Alton Salmon. The family will be at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Constance L. Davis

SUFFOLK -- Constance Louise .Davis, 86, died Sept. 1, 1999. A native of Isle of Wight County, she was the daughter of the late E.H. Howell and Florence K. Tennis.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Davis; a son, Ted Specht of Hampton; two grandsons, Ted Specht Jr. and James A. Specht; and one great-grandson, Daniel Specht.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Robert H. Holmes Sr.

WAVERLY -- Deacon Robert H. Holmes Sr., of the 3700 block of Martin Luther King Hwy., Surry County, died Thursday morning, Sept. 2, 1999, at Southside Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Tucker's Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg.

Phyllis W. Peffer

WAVERLY -- Phyllis Wheeler Peffer, 49, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at her home in Waverly. The wife of Lindsey Leroy Peffer, she was a native of Sussex County and the daughter of Marvin and Anne McCoy Wheeler of Disputanta.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Waverly. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Estelle B. Saunders

SPRING GROVE -- Estelle Burrell Saunders of the 4000 block of Huntington Road died Aug. 31, 1999. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Carsley. Poole's Funeral Home is in charge.

Joseph G. Cottone

HARBORTON -- Joseph George Cottone, 75, formerly of Waldwick, N.J., died Sept. 1, 1999. A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Gabriel's Arch Angel Catholic Church, Saddle River, N.J. Doughty Funeral Home, Exmore, is in charge.

Cottie P. Gibson

WILLIAMSTON -- Cottie Perry Gibson, 66, of the 5800 block of Everetts Road, died Sept. 1, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Biggs Funeral Home.
