Louis B. Fine
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Louis B. Fine, a resident of The Oceans Condominium in Virginia Beach, died Sept. 2, 1998.
Mr. Fine was born in the Berkeley section of Norfolk Oct. 3, 1904. He was the son of Mamie and Morris Fine and graduated from Maury High School, Class of 1920. He received his L.L.B. degree from Georgetown University in 1925 and was admitted to practice law in the state of Virginia in 1924. While at Georgetown University, he was a member of the Georgetown Law Journal and later served as president of the Georgetown Alumni Association. He was also a life member of the Georgetown Board of Regents. He was the recipient of an honorary doctor of laws from Georgetown University and received the John Carroll Award, the highest distinguished alumni award.
He was a founder of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and was its president and recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. He was also a founder of the American Trial Lawyers Association. For many years, he was its parliamentarian and, later, secretary. He was a former director of the The First Coastal Bank and was a substitute judge in the civil court for the city of Norfolk for many years. He was the founding partner of the law firm of Fine, Fine, Legum and Fine and practiced law in Virginia for 71 years. He was a founder and chairman of the board of the Runnymede Corp. He was a former president of The Civitan Club of Norfolk and former president of the United Jewish Family Service of Norfolk and general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Berkeley Lodge, AF&AM. He was a member of the board of visitors of Old Dominion University, a teacher of constitutional law at Norfolk College of Law, and a commissioner in chancery in the city of Norfolk and Chesapeake. He was also a member of various legal associations and commissions.
Mr. Fine is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Minnie Snyder Fine; two sons, Morris and his wife, Jan, and Andrew and his wife, Barbara; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Fine, Kathryn Fine, Matthew Fine, Robert Fine, Elizabeth Fine and Michael Fine; and three great-grandchildren, all of whom affectionately called him ``Daddy Louis."
Burial services will be private. A memorial service will be held at Ohef Sholom Temple, Stockley Gardens and Raleigh Ave., 4 p.m. today. A reception will follow at Kaufman Hall. The family will receive at the reception and not at the residence of the deceased. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Virginia Beach Foundation, P.O. Doris W. Foster
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Doris Waldrup Foster, 64, of the 1800 block of Colonial Arms Circle and longtime resident of the Tidewater area died Sept. 2, 1998.

Foster was born Jan. 11, 1934, in Talladega, Ala., to the late James Cecil Waldrup and the late Grace Ida Matson Waldrup.

Foster is survived by a daughter, Patti Fralix and son-in-law, Mike, of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Evelyn W. Peay of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Donald Ray Waldrup and Michael Eugene Waldrup of Talladega, Ala.; two grandchildren, Tara Leigh Pennington of Atlanta, Ga., and Chatham Sullivan Fralix of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews including Paula Rebecca Monahan of Raleigh, Barry Elliot Peay of Virginia Beach, Mason Andrew Peay of Christians, Va., and Mark Wood of Florida, who were like her children. She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Bernice Wood and a brother, James Edward Waldrup.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Twiford Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake. Michael Davis will officiate. Soloist Pam Richardson will provide the music. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, is handling arrangements.
Charles D. Haverty
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Charles Dorsey Haverty, 71, died Sept. 2, 1998, in a local hospital.
Born in Princess Anne County, Va., he was a charter member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Mr. Haverty was a U.S. Navy Seabee for 10 years during which time he served in World War II on Tinian Island and during the Korean War in Thule, Greenland. He served 21 years in the National Guard 29th Division and 111th Field Artillery where he received the Bronze Star. He also retired from the Hampton Roads Horticultural Research Station after 40 years of service.
Mr. Haverty was a model boat craftsman and miniature carousel builder. His models have been on display in numerous east coast museums including the local Mariner's Museum and the 24th Street Coast Guard Station. They have also been featured in numerous magazines.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette S. Haverty; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Kaye and Brad Schomburg of Chesapeake; two sisters, Beatrice Woodhouse of Norfolk and Nelly Perry of Georgia; and three brothers, John R. Haverty of Hawaii, Robert P. Haverty of North Carolina and James N. Haverty of Virginia.

Shirley A. Jones
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Shirley A. Jones, 60, of the 1000 block of Mineola Drive, died Sept. 2, 1998, at her residence.
She was born in Brunswick County, (White Plains, Va.), and was a member of Indian River Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Faye Mayton Bleicher of Greenville, N.C., Gayle Mayton Burnett and her husband, Edward, of Virginia Beach, and Lynne Marie Mayton and her fiance, Bil Thompson, of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Jarrett Bleicher and Chelsea Bleicher, both of Greenville; and her former husband, Maxey Mayton.

George R. Korsnick
VIRGINIA BEACH -- George R. Korsnick, 54, of Virginia Beach, died Sept. 1, 1998, in Norfolk.
A native of Philipsburg, Pa, he was a Navy veteran and vice president of Research & Development Solutions Inc. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Moose Lodge No. 941 in Grassflat, Pa.
Survivors include his daughters, Susan Mosley of Virginia Beach, Katherine Barrus of North Carolina and Elizabeth Korsnick of Williamsburg; his mother, Mary Korsnick of Pennsylvania; and his fiance, Elizabeth Biddle and her daughter, Logan Gonella, both of Virginia Beach.

Raleigh T. Piland Jr.
SUFFOLK -- Raleigh Talmadge Piland Jr., 71, of the 230 block of Kenyon Road, died Sept. 2, 1998, at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.
A native of Jesup, Ga., he was the son of the late Raleigh Talmadge Piland Sr. and Belle Hires Piland. He was employed with Suffolk News Herald for 37 1/2 years and a member of Bethlehem Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred D. Piland of Suffolk; daughter, Amelia P. Hayes of Gaithersburg, Md.; son, Raleigh Talmadge Piland III of Virginia Beach; and grandchildren, Brian Hayes of Gaithersburg, Md., Joshua Piland and Rebecca Piland, both of Virginia Beach.

Eugene A. Groshong
GRAFTON -- Eugene A. ``Gene" Groshong, 78, of Grafton, died Sept. 1, 1998. Mr. Groshong was a registered architect and member of the American Institute of Architects. He retired from the firm of Forrest Coile and Associates in 1991 after 44 years of employment.
Mr. Groshong was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Sarah Groshong; his wife, Susie Groshong; and his son, Allen Groshong.
Survivors include his brother, Ross Groshong of Greensboro, N.C.; daughters, Sarah Groshong of Eastville and Carol G. Colonna of Grafton; son, Eugene A. Groshong Jr. of Alexandria; son and daughter-in-law, George and Diane Groshong of Grafton; granddaughters, Diane G. FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- Michael A. Favro, 55, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 25, 1998.

Hattie B. Hodges
EVERETT, Mass. -- Hattie B. Hodges, 94, of Parkway Manor Nursing Home, died Aug. 30, 1998, at her residence.
Born in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Bettie Walker. Mrs. Hodges was a devoted member of Third Baptist Church in Portsmouth for over 70 years. She was a retired waitress.
The widow of Osmond Hodges, she is survived by two nieces, Dorothy Gomez of Everett, Mass., and Thelma
Johnson of Bronx, N.Y.; three nephews, Carl Walker of Everett, Robert A. Steele and Melvin Steele, both of Portsmouth; a very dear friend, Nancy Wilson of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Elnora Hodges; and a brother-in-law, the Rev. Roger S. Steele of Portsmouth. She was also predeceased by sisters, Alice Wiggins and Sarah Goodman; brothers, Loney Walker and Gilbert Walker; a great aunt, Cherie Walker Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Lucy H. Steele.
A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today followed by a funeral service from 7 to 8 p.m. by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth. ORANGE, N.J. -- Harmeedah Tawfeek (Celestine), formerly of Chesapeake, died Aug. 31, 1998, after a brief illness.
She was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church, Newark, N.J., and was employed by Essex Valley Visiting Nurses Association at the time of her death. Prior to that, she worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Jersey for 20 years before retiring in 1985.
She is survived by her children, Wahkeelah Ellis of Maplewood, N.J., and Rasool Tawfeek of Washington state; her mother, Claire Fitchett of Chesapeake; sisters, Marva Langster of Portsmouth, Ilona Burgess of Capitol Heights, Md., Marchetta Hurdle of Norfolk and Carlotta Fitchett of Bladensburg, Md.; her son-in-law, Robert Ellis; and daughter-in-law, Cecilia Tawfeek; grandchildren, Sabina, Cha'nel and Briante'; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
