Nancy N. Miller
NORFOLK -- Nancy Lyle Newcomer Miller, 85, died Sept. 24, 1998.
The daughter of the late Harry and Margrett Newcomer, she was born in Hot Springs, Va., on Jan. 28, 1913.
Mrs. Miller is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Veir, and son-in-law, Charles, of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Samantha Hulatt of Norfolk and Robert Veir of Virginia Beach.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sentara Hospice, Koger Executive Center, No. 8, Norfolk, Va. 23502. A private service will be held at a later date. Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.
Jack E. Sims
NORFOLK -- Jack Edward Sims, 68, of the 8200 block of Jolima Ave., went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 25, 1998.
A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Mr. Sims retired from the U.S. Navy in 1972 and served in both the Korean Conflict and the Vietname War. He had also retired from Continental Grain Co. He was a member of Calvary Temple, Norfolk.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Wright Sims; two stepdaughters, Melody Repanshek of Portsmouth and Tamara Marin and granddaughter, Raven, of Norfolk; three brothers, Ross Sims Jr. and Don Sims of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ron Sims of Prince George, Va.; one sister, Bobbie Webb of Dandridge, Tenn; a sister-in-law, Sarah Turk, and mother-in-law, Sarah ``Perk" Wright, both of Norfolk; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Calvary Temple, 5639 Brickell Road, by the Rev. Lamar Sentell. Burial with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

NORFOLK -- ReDella Alyda Sylvia, 80, of the 1200 block of River Oaks Drive, died Sept. 23, 1998, in Norfolk.
Born in Rochester, Minn., she was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Paul B. Sylvia; two daughters, Faith Ann Pearce of Norfolk and ReNae Adele Zayas of Hillsborough, Calif.; a brother, Sherman Simonson of Sargeant, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Jimmy P. Pearce, Richard Zayas, David Zayas and Buffie Gambirazio.

Joann Farrow
PORTSMOUTH -- Joann Farrow, 50, of Marshall Ave., died Sept. 24, 1998, in her home.
She was a native of Fort Benning, Ga. She retired from the FBI, Washington, D.C., as a file clerk. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, South Portsmouth.
She is survived by her father, John A. Farrow Sr. of Chesapeake; four sisters, Verneta L. Ruffin and Vivian T. Bell, both of Portsmouth, Phyllis Conner of Radford, Va., and Natasha Farrow of Glen Allen, Va.; one brother, John A. Farrow Jr. of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her mother, Louise G. Farrow.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church South Portsmouth, by the Rev. Warren E. Amlet. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at 6 p.m. Monday. The body will be taken to the church at noon Wednesday.
Ernest A. Baines
PORTSMOUTH -- Ernest Adrian Baines, 66, of the 1100 block of Melvin Drive, died Sept. 25, 1998, in Portsmouth.
He was born in Portsmouth to the late Ernest O. Baines and the late Pauline Wilkins Baines. He had retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a rigger supervisor. Mr. Baines was a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a former scoutmaster of Troop 212 and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie W. Baines; two stepdaughters, Sharon Sears of Portsmouth and Doreen Amory of Wisconsin; three stepsons, Anthony Ward of Chesapeake, Terry Ward and David Ward Sr., both of Portsmouth; a sister, Florence L. Baines of Portsmouth; four brothers, Paul I. Baines of Arlington, Texas, R. Donnie Baines of Chesapeake, Merrill E. Baines of Suffolk and James A. Baines of Danville, Va.; seven grandchildren, Amy Ward, David Ward Jr., Shelby Sears, Kelly Sears, Amanda Rhodes, Nicholas Rhodes and Chase Ward; a great-grandson, Corey Ward; a cousin, Cornelia Goodwin; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Steve Nethery and the Rev. Jackie Allen. Burial will be in Cypress Chapel Cemetery, Suffolk. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Luther W. Freeman
PORTSMOUTH -- Luther W. Freeman, 78, of the 100 block of Allard Road, died Sept. 23, 1998, in Maryview Medical Center.
A native of Windsor, N.C., he retired as an aircraft towman after 37 years of service with the Norfolk Naval Rework Facility. He was a member and former usher at Twine Memorial Holy Temple, Portsmouth.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen G. Freeman; four daughters, Mary Gallashaw and Lavern Walker both of Portsmouth, Barbara Whitfield of Chesapeake, and Jacqueline
Jones of Dallas; two sons, Willie Freeman and Jeffery Freeman both of Portsmouth; four sisters, Dora Dozier of Portsmouth, Doris Bellamy of Norfolk, Mary Hilton of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Geraldine Scott of Atlanta, Ga.; five brothers, Randle Freeman of Portsmouth, Henry Freeman of Windsor, N.C., Hill Parker of Gates County, N.C., John Parker of Norfolk, and Wayland Parker of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, in-laws, and friends. He was predeceased by a son, Luther D. Freeman.
A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Twine Memorial Holy Temple, Portsmouth, by Elder Michael Porter. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon Monday. The body will be taken to the church at noon Tuesday.

Eoline P. Hewlett
PORTSMOUTH -- Eoline Porter Hewlett, 85, of the 100 block of Douglas Ave., died Sept. 26, 1998, in Suffolk.
She was born in Fayetteville, N.C., to the late Lemuel Porter and the late Minnie Monroe Porter. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.
The widow of Ellsworth Carl Hewlett, she is survived by two daughters, Linda C. Collins of Portsmouth and Patsy L. Montgomery of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Treva Pendelton of Weeksville, N.C., and Ruth Field of Stockton, Calif.; a brother, Herbert L. Porter of Durham, N.C.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, and at other times at 14 Greenbrier Road, Portsmouth.
Michelle T. Moore
PORTSMOUTH -- Michelle T. ``Peanut" Moore, 36, of the 3600 block of Elliott Ave., died Sept. 22, 1998, at the 3000 block of McLean St.
A native of Norfolk, she was a cook with 15 years of service at the Dixieland Restaurant. She was a former member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church, Virginia Beach.
She is survived by her husband, Brian L. Moore of Philadelphia, Pa., three sons, Lorenzo Clark, Jermaine Clark and Antonio Moore, all of Portsmouth; her mother, Evelyn O. Clark of Portsmouth; her father, Willie Reginald Clark of Norfolk; one sister; one brother; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends; and a special friend, Wanda Womack.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Rosa Patterson. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Clyde W. Stewart
PORTSMOUTH -- Clyde William Stewart, 87, of the 300 block of Effingham St., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at his residence.
He was a native of Richmond and retired from Naval Ordinance Systems Command as a logistics inspector. Mr. Stewart was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, Seaboard Masonic Lodge No. 56, Portsmouth Kiwanis Club and Polygan Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the Virginia Army National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Cooper Stewart; a daughter, Lucy S. White of Lynchburg, Va.; a son, Clyde W. Stewart Jr. and his wife, Twylah, of Cumberland, Md.; a godson, Edwin C. Wright of Wilmington, Del.; and four grandchildren, Scott White, Drew White, Sarah Jeanne Stewart and Rebecca Anne Stewart.
A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Raymond Edmonds. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.
Robert J. Boyd
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Robert J. Boyd, 88, of the 800 block of Biltmore Drive, passed away Sept. 25, 1998, at Bay Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Centre.
Born in Medina, N.Y., he was a retired insurance broker and a graduate of The University of Pennsylvania-Wharton School of Finance.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Arlene Boyd; a daughter, Barbara Colby Riordan and her husband, Gordon, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a son, Robert Osborne Boyd of New York City.
Burial will be at Boxwood Cemetery in Medina, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
Kenneth W. Caffey
VIRGINIA BEACH -- CDR Kenneth W. Caffey, USN, retired, 88, passed away peacefully at his home Sept. 25, 1998.
Born in Union, Mo., in 1910, he was retired from the Virginia Beach School System.
The widower of Helen P. Caffey, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia C. Evans, and a son, Kenneth W. Caffey Jr., both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Nola Ryder of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandsons, Brian Evans of Roanoke, Va., and Bruce Evans of Virginia Beach; and five great-grandchildren.

Wiley M. Holland
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Wiley Monroe Holland, 70, of Oak Terrace Drive, died Sept. 25, 1998, at his home after a long illness.
Born in Norfolk on July 15, 1928, he was one of five children of Wiley M. and Estelle Holland. He was retired after 44 years with NCR Corp. Mr. Holland also worked for the Norfolk & Western Railroad and served with the Navy after World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marian C. Holland; three sons, Barry W. Holland of Dallas, Texas, Christopher N. Holland of Norfolk and Donald A. Dinwiddie of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Judith H. Ray and Tracey H. Dinwiddie of Virginia Beach; one brother, Lewis Ray Holland, and one sister, Dorothy H. Tatarian, both of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
It was Mr. Holland's wish that no public funeral or memorial service be held. His body was donated to medical science. A private gathering for family members and close friends will be held at 5 p.m. today at the family residence.
