NORFOLK -- Loretta Gayle Hardesty, 46, of the 9300 block of Beachview St., died Sept. 17, 1998, at her residence.
She was born in Norfolk and was a Protestant.
Survivors include her husband, David I. Hardesty; two sons, David A. Hardesty of Norfolk and Casey E. Hardesty of Franklin, Tenn.; her mother, Gladys P. Miles of Virginia Beach; a brother, Jesse R. Southall of Virginia Beach; a stepbrother, Robert Pledger of Louisville, Ky.; two grandchildren, Brandon A. Hardesty and Ashley M. Roberts; and stepmother, Hazel D. Twitty of Lakehurst, N.J.

Donald E. Jackson
NORFOLK -- Donald E. ``Red" Jackson, 60, died Sept. 19, 1998.
Mr. Jackson was born in Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Army and was past president of the Gowrie Park Civic League. Mr. Jackson was a longtime employee of The Virginian-Pilot.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Jackson; a daughter, three sons, his father, three sisters, one brother, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Services for Mr. Jackson will be private. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Thomas D. Jones
NORFOLK -- Thomas D. Jones, 86, of the 1100 block of Bland St., died Sept. 15, 1998.
He was a member of First Baptist Church Logan Park, Norfolk, the Male Usher Board, and a faithful member of the church's Four Score Club. He was retired and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his daughter, Valerie Jackson; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in First Baptist Church Logan Park, Norfolk by the Rev. Price. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at 1104 Bland St., No. A, Norfolk, on Monday at 11 a.m. for the funeral procession to the church. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Ave., is in charge.
Ruby V. Mann
NORFOLK -- Ruby Virginia Mann of the 700 block of
Johnson Ave. passed to eternal life Sept. 17, 1998, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Rev. Theodore and Lottie Williamson, a native of Norfolk, and a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She was a member of Wesley Union AME Zion Church where she served as organist and directoress for 59 years. Many of her piano students became professional musicians and she received many awards for her outstanding services.
She was a member of the Tidewater Music Teachers Forum, former music director for Shiloh Baptist Day Care, organist for St. Mark United Church of Christ for 10 years and St. Thomas AME Zion Church, as well as for many vocal groups.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Ruby Mann Pool and husband, Edward Pool, of Virginia Beach; a son, Clarence T. Mann and wife, Debra Mann of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Clarence T. Mann Jr. of Raleigh and Crystal Pool-Clarke of Dumfries, Va.; great-grandchildren, Krysta Pool and Andre Clarke II; four step-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Banks and husband, Russel Banks, of Washington, D.C.; brothers, Robert Williamson and wife, Gloria Williamson, of Delran, N.J., and James Williamson of Richmond; brother-in-law, William Ambrose of Norfolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Christian wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wesley Union AME Zion Church, 708

William T. Saunders
NORFOLK -- William T. Saunders passed away Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at his residence.
He was born in Deep Creek. He was employed by Asphalt Roads & Materials Co. Inc. until his illness struck.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Q. Saunders; son, John Quinerly and his fiancee; grandson, Nyhre Quinerly; a brother, Edward Saunders; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Saunders, Mrs. Johnnie Q. Branch, Vanetta Quinerly; a brother-in-law, George R. Quinerly; a very special friend, Frank Pierce; an uncle, Willie Stevens; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wilson L. Saunders
NORFOLK -- Wilson L. Saunders, 75, died Sept. 17, 1998, at Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Born in Norfolk, he worked for the U.S. Civil Service and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Powellsville Baptist Church in Ahoskie, N.C., Masonic Lodge No. 335, VFW Post 3160, and 29th Division Association No. 37.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie B. Saunders; two daughters, Terrie Saunders and Sheila Stone, both of Norfolk; a son, Thomas L. Saunders of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara Laber of Norfolk and Yvonne Saunders of Chesapeake.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Fred Braswell. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Suresh H. Advani
PORTSMOUTH -- Suresh H. Advani, 53, of the 700 block of Dunedin Road, died Sept. 18, 1998, in Portsmouth.
Born in Hyderabad-Sindh, India, he was a quality control engineer for Raytheon Corp. He was vice-president of Sikh Temple and a committee member of A.I.H.R.
Survivors include his mother, Rukmani Advani; sister-in-law, Mona Advani; niece, Anjali Advani; and nephew, Sunil Advani. He was preceded in death by his father, Hashmatrai Advani, and brother, Sunder Advani.

Vivian C. Jones
PORTSMOUTH -- Vivian Culpepper Jones, 76, of the 200 block of Leonard Road, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at her residence.
She was a native of Portsmouth and a retired bookkeeper for Allied Mills. Mrs.
Jones was a member of Alliance Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Lankford Jones; a daughter, Karen L. Heitkemper of Madison County, Va.; a sister, Norma Jean Benson of Portsmouth; and two grandchildren, Todd P. Rohrer and Brian P. Rohrer.

Georgia B. Smith
PORTSMOUTH -- Georgia B. Smith, 78, of the 800 block of Madison St., died Sept. 17, 1998, at Maryview Medical Center.
Born in Windsor, N.C., she was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, Portsmouth.
Survivors include her husband, William T.
Smith Sr.; a daughter, Phyllis Ann Wallace of Portsmouth; four sons, Leon Sprueill, McKinley Sprueill, William Sprueill and Otto Sprueill, all of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Olive Branch Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. J.B. Sharp. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will begin at noon Monday at Corprew Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Florence W. Stolz
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Florence W. Stolz, 100, died peacefully Sept. 17, 1998.
She was a very strong, joyful, faithful servant of the Lord. Florence was born and resided in Pennsylvania until 1980, then residing here until her death.
She leaves behind her daughter, Mary Norma Zadai; one sister, Grace Nurley; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The family will miss her deeply, yet rejoices with her as she enters into her well-deserved rest. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
Lawrence S. Gray
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lawrence ``Larry" Sherman Gray, 68, died Sept. 17, 1998, at his home.
Born in Hawesville, Ky., he was a retired electrical/acoustics engineer from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service and a retired electrical engineer from NaveSeaSystems, Norfolk, after 20 years of service. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
Larry joined the Navy in 1948. Serving for 20 years, he attended Electronics Technician ``A", Ground Control Approach and various Anti-Submarine Warfare Equipment schools. He attended Purdue University and graduated summa cum laude in 1962. As an electrical engineer, Larry joined VS-26 ASW Squadron in Norfolk aboard the USS Randolph (1963-64). He was commissioned in January 1965 and transferred to VF-102 and served on the USS America until returning in 1967. Following retirement, Larry joined Naval Sea Combat Systems Engineering, Norfolk, until May 1985. After retiring from civil service, he established GESCO and was a self-employed private contractor. For the past four years, Larry was secretary of the Ground Control Approach Association.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Lois S. Gray; two daughters, Rachel Rosenthal and her husband, Richard, of Norfolk, and Martha Musacchio and her husband, Mark, of Chesapeake; three sons, Eric W. Gray and his wife, Isabel, of Lee, N.H., C. Leonard Gray and his wife, Kathy, of Virginia Beach and James L. Gray and his wife, Linda, of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Nellie Powers of Hawesville, Ky., Henrietta Terres of Bemidji, Minn., Dorothy Beard of Evansville, Ind., and Betty Patterson of Oskaloosa, Kan.; one brother, Joseph ``Bud" Franklin Gray of Hawesville, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, Sean, Becki and Audrey Gray, Kurt and Robin Gray, Daniel and Justin Gray, Sarah Rosenthal, Jamie McLaulin and Natalie Walker; a son-in-law, Eric Walker of Virginia Beach.
