Walter A. Poole
CHESAPEAKE -- Walter A. Poole, 77, died Sept. 16, 1998, in Chesapeake General Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
A native of Statesville, N.C., he was a veteran of World War II and retired from the federal government.
Mr. Poole is survived two daughters, Dottie Vann of Chesapeake and Elaine Marrion of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren, Wendy Vann and John Vann, both of Chesapeake.
A graveside service will be conducted in Statesville, N.C. Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association or Simonsdale Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth.
Frances J. Somers
CHESAPEAKE -- Frances J. Somers, 72, passed away Sept. 15, 1998, in a local hospital.
Born in Baltimore, Md., she was a retired secretary, a loving mother, grandmother and an avid Redskins fan.
She is survived by her son, Lt. Cmdr. Scott Somers, USN, and his wife, Patti; and a granddaughter, Megan.

Jesse T. Waters
CHESAPEAKE -- Jesse T. Waters, 82, of the 2300 block of Chesapeake Ave., died Sept. 16, 1998, in Chesapeake.
Born in Pinetown, N.C., he was a forklift operator at Ford Motor Co. for 28 years. Mr. Waters was a member of Woodmen of The World and United Auto Worker Local No. 919. He attended South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church in Chesapeake. Mr. Waters was an Army veteran of World War II. He was an avid farmer who loved his second home in Pinetown which he continued to personally care for until his illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Eula Browney Waters.
Survivors include one daughter, Maureen Gail Ozman and her husband, Bill, of Chesapeake; one son, Gary T. Waters and his wife, Linda, of Chesapeake; three sisters, Isabell Springer and Mary Sullivan, both of Washington, N.C., and Lela Riley of Norfolk; one brother, Henry Waters of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren, Stephanie Herrera and her husband, Ed, of Chesapeake, Lisa Yost and her husband, Sean, of Portsmouth, Christopher Waters of Chesapeake, Jaime Borum of Norfolk, Jennifer Waters of Florida and Benjamin Borum Jr. of Chesapeake; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica Winchester of Chesapeake, Joseph Yost and Joshua Yost, both of Portsmouth.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Amos Eby. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, and at the residence at all other times.
Denise M. Young
CHESAPEAKE -- Denise ``Neicy" Young, 37, left her earthly body to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
She was a native of Baltimore, Md. She moved to Chesapeake in September 1996 and joined Divine Baptist Church where she was a faithful member.
She is survived by her husband, Irvin ``Skipp" Young of Los Angeles; one daughter, Tanisha Michelle of Chesapeake; her mother, Dorthea Brent; a brother, Derrick Merritt and his wife, Sherrod; grandparents, Vernon and Eleanor Gaugh, all of Baltimore; a devoted brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Gloria
Brown of Chesapeake; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and dear friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Divine Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Kelvin McDonald. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon Friday. The family will be at the home of Mr. James and Gloria Brown, 423 Las Gaviotas Blvd., Chesapeake, and will assemble there for the procession to the church. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
James B. Ballew Jr.
NORFOLK -- James Bryant Ballew Jr., 40, passed away Sept. 11, 1998, in his residence. Mr. Ballew was a native of Norfolk and was employed with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Survivors include his father, Jim Ballew Sr.; his stepmother, Nancy Ballew; four cousins; one niece and an aunt.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Rosewood Memorial Park. Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, is handling arrangements.
Charles M. Cacace
NORFOLK -- Charles M. Cacace, 94, of the 7211 Granby St., and a former resident of 156 W. Belvedere Road, died Sept. 15, 1998, in his home. He was the former owner and operator of the Marine Stevedore Company.
Mr. Cacace was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk and a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Norfolk. Mr. Cacace was a member of Elks Lodge; Circus Saint and Sinners, Consolvo tent; A.O.P.A.; Knights of Columbus, Council, # 365; Chesapeake Athletic Club; and Wards Corner Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Whitehurst Cacace of Norfolk; his daughter, Marguerite C. Burton and her husband, Roy L. Burton Jr., of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Margie B. Griffith and her husband, Charles D. Griffith Jr., Roy L. Burton III and his wife, Jewell, of Virginia Beach and Charles Mitchell Burton and his wife, Damian, of Norfolk; and seven great-grandchildren, Roy Chadwick Burton, Carrie Cacace Burton, Christopher Burton Ripley, Matthew Scott Ripley, Charles Dee Griffith III, Charles Mitchell Burton Jr. and Erin Casey Burton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church by Father Brian Rafferty and the Rev. David Davenport. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends today from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at H.D. NORFOLK -- Elvin John ``E.J." Gallano, 3, passed away Sept. 16, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach.
Clarice V. Jackson
NORFOLK -- Clarice Virginia Jackson, 78, of the 5000 block of Brookville Road, slipped quietly from this earth to live with God after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998.
She was born in Norfolk on Jan. 6, 1920. She retired from Colonial Stores Inc. She was predeceased by her husband, Garland Jackson Sr.; her son, Garland Jackson Jr.; her mother, Lucille R. France; and her father, Theodore France.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by three daughters, Jean C. Miles, Sandra M. Aull and Frances D. Wallace, all of Norfolk; a son, Douglas C. Jackson of Chesapeake; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was the loving grandmother of 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in the chapel of Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Harold Cason. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Thomas A. Payette
NORFOLK -- Thomas A. Payette, 68, died Sept. 15, 1998, in a local nursing home.
He was a barber for 40 years with Willard Barber Shop and was in the Navy Reserves for seven years.
Mr. Payette is survived by one brother, Aldor J. Payette Jr. and his wife, Ruth Lucille, of Chesapeake; a nephew, Aldor J. ``Chip" Payette III of Richmond; and a niece, Lucille ``Sandy" Gutterman of Reno, Nev.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Matthews Catholic Church. Interment will be private in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.
Ann F. Powell
NORFOLK -- Ann Florence Powell, 64, of the 1300 block of Creamer Road, died Sept. 16, 1998, in DePaul Hospital.
Mrs.
Powell was born in New York City, N.Y. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk.
Survivors include her sons, Carl, Mike and Ray Morrison, a daughter, Elizabeth Thumm, and their respective spouses; eight grandchildren. She is also survived by her five sisters, Florence Clark, Patricia Thater, Cathy Harris, Gerry Kenny and Jean Young; her four brothers, Michael, Frank, Edward and Joseph Hubert; an aunt and cousin; 29 nieces and nephews; and 26 grandnieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Father Julian B. Goodman. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends can pay respects Friday from 11 a.m. until the start of the Wake service at 7 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel.

NORFOLK -- Mikal Vincent Rivera, infant son of Vincent Rivera and Natalie Yarborough, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Private services will be at a later date. Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

NORFOLK -- Richard Rudolph Theisen, 92, of the 7400 block of Major Ave., died Sept. 14, 1998, in a local hospital.
A native of Illinois, he was retired owner and operator of Mastercraft Television & Radio Repair.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Lillie Theisen; one daughter, Virginia Lea Barker of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, Richard Roy Theisen of Richmond and Russell Eugene Theisen of Huntsville, Ala.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one stepson, Orlando L. Stone of Norfolk.

Julian A. Chesson Jr.
PORTSMOUTH -- Julian A. ``Buddy" Chesson Jr., 56, of the 300 block of Tareyton Lane, died Sept. 15, 1998, at his residence.
A native of Portsmouth, he was a retired contract administrator for the Naval Air Station. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietname War and received the Vietnamese Cross for Galantry with Bronze Star.
Survivors include his mother, Lucille Cole Bour of Portsmouth; a sister, Renette Miragliotta of San Diego, Calif.; and a brother, Claude Bour, also of Portsmouth.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. George Mullinax. The family will receive friends at 4840 Colonial Lane, Portsmouth. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is in charge.
