Mary L. Benton

SUFFOLK -- Mary Louise Benton, 67, of the 2800 block of N. Shore Drive, died Sept. 7, 1998.

A native of Suffolk, she was the widow of Luther Marvin Benton.

Survivors include two daughters, E. Marie Felton and Edith L. Benton; one step-daughter, Patricia Benton; one step-son, Larry Benton; one step-granddaughter, Sherry Benton; and her mother, Louise Purkhiser.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, by the Rev. Thomas Reynolds. Burial will be in Liberty Springs Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service. Following the service, they will be at the home of Mrs. C. Oliver Bradshaw, 912 Carolina Road, Suffolk. SUFFOLK -- Eula Evans, 98, of the 100 block of S. Capital St., died Sept. 5, 1998. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Applewhite Funeral Home.

Theodore R. Slade

SUFFOLK -- Theodore Roosevelt Slade, 93, of the 800 block of White Marsh Road, died Sept. 6, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Applewhite Funeral Home.

Edward E. Turner

MELFA -- Edward Emack Turner, 84, died July 27, 1998. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Onancock. Williams-Onancock Funeral Home is in charge.

Beulah R. Lightfoot

HERTFORD -- Beulah Lee Riddick Lightfoot, 85, of Route 2, died Sept. 6, 1998. A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bay Branch AME Zion Church, Belvidere, N.C. Stallings Funeral Home is in charge.

Donald M. Long

EDENTON -- Donald M. Long, 86, of the 300 block of Woodland Drive, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, in Brian Center Nursing Home in Hertford.

A native of Kendallville, Ind., Mr. Long was a son of the late John and Gertrude Alabaugh Long and the husband of Agnes Leila Bueche Long. Mr. Long was retired from the Inwood Store and a member of the St. Anne Catholic Church.

Surviving, other than his wife, is his daughter and her husband, Mary Jo and Ralph Clapper of Edenton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in the St. Anne Catholic Church Hall by Father Gene Grabowski. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Anne Catholic Church Building Fund, 207 N. Broad St., Edenton, N.C. 27932. The family will be gathering at the home of Mary Jo and Ralph Clapper, 430 Pineview Drive in Edenton. The Evans Funeral Home, Edenton, is serving the Long Family.

John B. Purvis

BETHEL -- John Benjamin Purvis, 77, of the 14500 block of N.C. Hwy. 11, died Sept. 7, 1998. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Biggs Funeral Chapel, Robersonville.

Harry G. Spencer Sr.

ENGELHARD -- Harry Griffin Spencer Sr., 74, died Sept. 3, 1998. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Spencer Family Cemetery. Rowsom Funeral Home, Columbia, is in charge.

Goldie P. Taft

ELIZABETH CITY -- Goldie Pinner Taft, 88, of the 900 block of First St., died Sept. 8, 1998. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Old Hollywood Cemetery. Twiford Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Isaac Salsbury

MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Isaac Salsbury, 74, a Norfolk native, died Sept. 7, 1998. Services were held Sept. 8 at Congregation B'nai Israel, Toms River, N.J. Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean, N.J., was in charge.

Marion A. Carr

CHESAPEAKE -- Marion A. Carr died Sept. 14, 1998.

Survivors include her husband, Will R. Carr of Chesapeake; one daughter, Yvonne Carr Franklin; one son-in-law, John S. Franklin; a special friend, Rose Marshall, all of Virginia Beach; an aunt, Dorothy Majors of Chesapeake; mother-in-law, Lola Foley of Bowling Green, Ky.

A private memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc.

Helen C. Heflin

CHESAPEAKE -- Helen Carol Heflin died in a Clarksburg, W.Va., hospital on Sept. 12, 1998. Before her health deterioration, she was a loving mother, dedicated ballroom dancer and an avid golfer. She traveled extensively during her lifetime in the United States, Europe and the Far East.

Survivors include her second husband, Colonel Bruce A. Heflin, U.S. Marine Corps Retired; her sons, Robert Dunn of Woodinville, Wash., Kenneth Dunn of Hillsborough, N.C., and Alan Dunn of Long Beach, Calif; a daughter, Beverly ``B.J." Dunn of Thurmont, Md.; stepson, Bruce Heflin II of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Susan Clark of Alexandria, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

A chapel service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. Entombment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 360 South Port Circle, Suite 104, Virginia Beach, Va. 23452.

Harry Lacy

CHESAPEAKE -- Harry Lacy of the 2800 block of Sunrise Ave., died Sept. 10, 1998. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Good News Mission Church of God in Christ, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home is in charge.

Dewey H. Burchett Sr.

PORTSMOUTH -- Dewey Hershel Burchett Sr., 75, of the 100 block of Gee St., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998.

He was a retired machinist from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Shop 31, and was a member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret R. Burchett; two sons, Dewey H. Burchett Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Larry W. Burchett of Richmond; three daughters, Barbara Byrd, Vickey Crittenden and Rosie Joyner, all of Portsmouth; one sister, Bertha Dalton of Ashland, Ky.; grandchildren, Jeffrey Burchett, Joey Byrd, David Crittenden Jr., Bobbie Byrd, Danny Burchett, Eric Crittenden, Ryan Joyner, Bethany Joyner, Lara Burchett, Henry W. Parker Jr., Cindy and Mike Parker; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; his unofficial ``adopted" children and devoted family friends, Donna Kile and Gary O'Dell.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, Pap Paw, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fairview Heights Baptist Church, Deep Creek Blvd., by Dr. Ted Barton and the Rev. Earl Sutton. Interment will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the residence with formal visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel.

Charles A. Craig

PORTSMOUTH -- Charles Augustine Craig, 91, of the 4900 block of W. Norfolk Road, died Sept. 13, 1998, at Maryview Hospital.

A native of Augusta County, Va., he was a retired newspaper foreman. He was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church, Richmond, and the widower of Mamie Sprouse Craig.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances C. Price and her husband, Ira, of Portsmouth and Nancy C. Fortune of Richmond; one sister, Helen White of Staunton, Va.; two brothers, Calvin C. Craig of Staunton and Marshall M. Craig of Verona; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Loving Funeral Home Chapel, Churchland, by the Rev. Harry Bowman. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Myrtle V. Justus

PORTSMOUTH -- Myrtle Virginia Justus, 73, of the 5800 block of Barberry Lane and a native of Hurley, Va., died Sept. 13, 1998, at Maryview Hospital.

Survivors include three sisters, Gertrude Vance and her husband, Dexter, of Portsmouth, Lillian O'Quinn and her husband, Lannis, of Akron, Ohio, and Pearl Justus of Green Cove Springs, Fla.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel by Pastor Larry O'Brien. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland.

Doris W. Smith

PORTSMOUTH -- Doris Wayland Smith, 91, of the 20 block of Lawrence Circle, died Sept. 13, 1998, at her residence.

Born in Roanoke, Va., she was a retired delinquent-tax clerk from the City of Portsmouth. She was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star Tidal Wave Lodge No. 9.

Survivors include one daughter, Nell Dickens Baker of Portsmouth; one son, Curman ``Buddy" Dickens of Franklin, Tenn.; one sister, Gladys Wayland Hoggard of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Ginny Morin Collins of Portsmouth, Frances Whisenhunt of Manassas, Va., Connie Allison of Chesapeake, Doris Land of Chesterfield, Va., James Dickens of Franklin, Tenn., Terry Speight of Houston, Texas, and Christopher Dailey of Chesapeake; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will be at 2100 Leckie St. in Portsmouth.

Charles White

PORTSMOUTH -- Charles White, 74, of the 4800 block of Deep Creek Blvd., died Sept. 13, 1998, at a Portsmouth hospital.

A native of Kentucky, he was a retired painter from Taylor Brothers and was a Baptist. Prior to World War II he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps which helped build the Skyline Drive.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth White; three daughters, Phyllis Eanes of Windsor, Va., Mary May of Ransom, Ky., and Eileen Millard of Chesapeake; one son, Charles White Jr. of Chesapeake; three brothers, Bill White and Clayton White, both of Michigan, and James White of Florida; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Tom Potter. The family will receive friends at the residence. Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is in charge.

Evelyn R. Wilkins
PORTSMOUTH -- Evelyn Roberts Wilkins, 87, recently of Kill Devil Hills, died Sept. 14, 1998 in Bretthaven Nursing Center, Nags Head, N.C. Mrs. Wilkins, a native and former resident of Portsmouth, was the widow of William Benjamin Wilkins. Survivors include a sister, Irene Roberts Rollins and her husband, Charles; a brother, James Francis Roberts and his wife, Ruby, all of Kill Devil Hills; a sister-in-law, Sarah Roberts of Portsmouth; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. James Carr. There is no scheduled visitation. Flowers are permitted. Family and friends may view the remains at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth.

Ethlyn O. Williams

PORTSMOUTH -- Ethlyn Odom Williams, 83, of the 2000 block of Colorado Ave., died Sept. 14, 1998, in a Portsmouth hospital.

She was born in Arcola, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Jesse D. and Clara T. Odom. She was the widow of George Vance Williams Sr.

Survivors include three daughters, Joyce W. McKinney of Portsmouth, Barbara W. Emert of Davidsonville, Md., Rebecca W. Peters of Portsmouth; two sons, George V. Williams Jr. of Belleville, Ill., and Larry D. Williams of Hayes, Va.; two sisters, Ruth Joyner and Matilda Swanson; two brothers, Jesse Odom Jr. and Millard Odom; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Nelson F. Fields and the Rev. Scott Rimer. Entombment will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
