Esther M. Robinson
NORFOLK -- Esther Mae ``Big Ma" Robinson of the 3300 block of Kimball Terrace passed away Sept. 17, 1999, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Born in Clarkton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Margaret L. ``Mag" Robinson and the late Charlie W. Robinson. She was a retired custodian and a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Pastor's Aide and Floral Club. She was also a member of Tidewater Park Garden Club, Rose Social and Savings Club, Grandy Park Senior Citizens Club, Larkspur Garden Club, Grandy Park, Salvation Army Home League, Federation Civil League Youth Garden Club of Grandy Park and United Order of Tents Elmi Elizabeth No. 364.
Survivors include five daughters, Bernadette McLean, Hattie Washington and Audrey Taylor, all of Norfolk, Betty Jacobs of Wheaton, Md., and Bertha
Jones of Portsmouth; a sister, Helen
Johnson of Hampton; a brother, William Robinson of Maryland; 35 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. I. Joseph Williams. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 3368 Kimball Terrace. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.
Terry W. Sawyer
NORFOLK -- Terry W. Sawyer, 57, of the 8000 block of Merritt St., died Sept. 20, 1999, in Petersburg, Va.
Born in Elizabeth City, N.C., he was an electronics technician for the city of Chesapeake, public school system. He was a member of Brentwood Baptist Church where he was chairman of the deacons and a Sunday school teacher. He was also past master of Ocean View Lodge No. 335, A.F.&A.M. and a member of Virginia Research Royal Arch Chapter 1753, Knights Templer, Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter 1, and Grice Commandry No. 16, Charles C. Rawls, AMD, Norfolk Scottish Rite. Mr. Sawyer was a U.S. Army veteran with nine years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Faye Sawyer; three sons, David Wayne Sawyer, Darrell J. Sawyer and Donald Ray Sawyer, all of Norfolk; two brothers, Aubrey Lutrell ``Lou" Sawyer of Virginia Beach and Willard Lynn Sawyer of Colonial Heights, Va.; and three grandchildren, Hillary Lucia Sawyer, Jay Dalton Sawyer and Ashlee Nicole Sawyer.
A funeral with Masonic rites will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hollomon-
Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by Joe Newman. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Brentwood Baptist Church General Fund.
Alice Oast Morse
PORTSMOUTH -- Alice Tabb Oast Morse, 79, of Hatton Point Lane, the widow of Wills Wray Morse Jr., died Sept. 21, 1999.
Mrs. Morse, a native of Portsmouth and the daughter of the late Judge William H. Oast and Martha King Oast, was retired as chairman of the Foreign Language Department at Woodrow Wilson High School after 20 years of service. She was a graduate of Randolph Macon Woman's College and received her master's degree from the University of Virginia. She was a member of Monumental Methodist Church; was a volunteer at the Churchland Branch of the Portsmouth Public Library for 25 years; and was a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.
Survivors include her three brothers, the Honorable William H. Oast Jr. and his wife, Martha Ann Mercer Oast, Townsend Oast and his wife, Ann
Powell Oast, and John King Oast all, of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Revs. Raymond H. Edmonds and R. Beverly Watkins.

Marie B. Whitehead
PORTSMOUTH -- Marie B. .Whitehead, 85, of the 3000 block of Portland St., died Sept. 18, 1999, in Maryview Medical Center.
Born in Southampton County, Va., she was the widow of Jessie L. Whitehead. She was a member of Grove Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and Martha Chapter No. 10, Order of the Eastern Star. She had retired as a school bus driver from the Portsmouth Public School System.
Survivors include her brother, Willie E. Beale Sr. of Franklin; and a host of nieces, including Nell Faulk and Marjorie Smith, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be noon today in Grove Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Melvin O. Marriner. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery, Franklin. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home began at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 11 a.m. today for the procession. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. today.
Patricia A. DaLuz
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Patricia A. DaLuz died Sept. 8, 1999, in her residence in Virginia Beach. Mrs. DaLuz was born Oct. 31, 1946, in Providence, R.I.
Survivors include her husband, Robert B. DaLuz; two sons, Robert and Lawrance, and a daughter, Penny DaLuz, all of Virginia Beach; her mother, Catherine Hepler of Providence, R.I.; three brothers, Virgle M. Hepler of Providence, James V. Hepler and John T. Hepler, both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Catherine M. Bennett, also of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews out of state. She will be missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the church or to the American Cancer Society. Colonial Crematorium provided information.
Vicki Sue Gero
VIRGINIA BEACH -- It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Vicki Sue Gero on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999. She was the beloved wife of Frank Gero, and daughter of Donna McRae and the late Frank McRae. She is survived by her sons, David Brooks and Kevin Gero; her daughter, Melinda Brooks; four grandchildren; and her brothers, Ronald, William and Roger McRae.
Vicki was born in Marysville, Kan., where upon graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School, she entered the U.S. Navy, where she served her country for three years. In addition to being a loving mother for her three children, she was a career woman for 25 years. As a civil servant, Vicki was instrumental in the development and testing of the Integrated Automated Travel System.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Eastern Shore Chapel, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Helen W. Griffith
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Helen W. Griffith died Sept. 19, 1999, at Sentara Nursing Center on Newtown Road.
Mrs. Griffith was born on Jan. 7, 1908, in Berkley, Calif. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles L. Griffith, who retired from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander after 30 years of service.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy G. Wolfred; grandson Charles Wolfred and his sons, John and Charlie; grandson John Wolfred, his wife, Cheryl, and their sons, Benjamin and Jordan; and granddaughter Brenda Waterfield, her husband, Chip, and their daughter, Jackie. Mrs. Griffith had a long life of service to others and will be sorely missed by family and friends.
Mrs. Griffith was a loyal member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church for 40 years, where she taught the third-grade Sunday school class for 30 years.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Charles R. Staples Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Charles .Raymond Staples Jr., 63, of the 1400 block of Dory Drive, died Sept. 20, 1999, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
A native of Portsmouth, he had been employed as the transportation supervisor for Virginia Beach public schools.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Ann Tretola Staples of Portsmouth; a daughter, Angelina Anne Shifflett, and two sons, Michael Raymond Staples and Phillip Richard Staples, all of Mechanicsville, Va.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Joseph Slowik. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a favorite charity.
