Alice V. Sanders
CHESAPEAKE -- Alice Virginia Sanders, 84, of the 600 block of Mill Landing Road, died Sept. 19, 1999.
Mrs. Sanders was born in Brookneal, Va., and was the daughter of the late Samuel Richard and Gracie Lee Hamlette Saunders. She was the widow of Grover C. Sanders Jr. and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Chesapeake and the Mary Williford Circle of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Harshaw of Charleston, S.C., and Susan Mobley of Chesapeake; a son, Grover C. Sanders III of Highland Springs, Va.; a sister, Arlene Roark of Chesapeake; two brothers, S.R. Saunders of Brookneal and Harry Elmo Saunders of Byers, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Oman Funeral Home Chapel, Great Bridge, with Dr. H.R. ``Chip" Roberson officiating. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.
Artellia T. Saulter
CHESAPEAKE -- Artellia T. Saulter, 89, of the 2800 block of Breeze Ave., died Sept. 19, 1999, in Sentara Nursing Center, Chesapeake.
Born in Holland, Va., she was the widow of Willie Saulter. She was a member of Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and a former member of New Hope Baptist Church, Chesapeake.
Survivors include three daughters, Sarah S. Anderson and Eunice S. Jenkins, both of Chesapeake, Bertha S. Pace of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a son, Willie T. Saulter of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Calvary Evangelical Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Pastor Allen R. McFarland. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at noon Thursday. The family will be at the home of her daughter, 2821 Romaron St., Chesapeake, and will assemble there for the procession.
Walter S. Whittington II
CHESAPEAKE -- Walter Spinhower Whittington II, 71, of Route 1, Box 19R, Winton, N.C., and formerly of Chesapeake and Suffolk, entered into eternal rest at 7:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at his residence.
Mr. Whittington was born on Feb. 17, 1928, in West Virginia. He is the son of Ruby Parson Whittington of Winston-Salem, N.C., and the late Walter S. Whittington Sr. He was predeceased by two brothers, Rex and Ray Whittington, who had lived in Winston-Salem. He retired after 26 years with Consolidated Freight of Virginia Beach. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served for nine years in the South Pacific. He was a longstanding member of the Long Branch Gun Club of Colerain, N.C., and attended the Portsmouth Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce E. Whittington; three sons, Walter S. Whittington III of Suffolk, Lonnie D. Warren Jr. of Colerain, N.C., and Charles L. Warren of Chesapeake; three daughters, Janice F. Robertson of Plymouth, N.C., Donna K. Rhoades of Chesapeake and Linda F. White of Ahoskie, N.C.; four brothers, Bruce, Glenn and Roy Whittington, all of Winston-Salem, and Troy Whittington of Louisa, Va.; three sisters, Burnice Walker, Mildred VanHoy and JoAnn Wyatt, all of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and good friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. Pastor Homer Peterson will officiate. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Williams of Chesapeake, was called home among the angels to be with the Lord Sept. 17, 1999.
Survivors include a brother, Alex
Williams of Chesapeake; maternal grandparents, Ellen and Harry Ellis and Marger Ward, all of Courtland; great-grandmother, Fannie Buckner of Courtland; paternal grandparents, Helen Dillard and Danny Godwin, both of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, John N. Ward Jr., formerly of Courtland.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Southampton Memorial Park, Franklin, with the Rev. Wayne Walton officiating. The family will receive friends this eveningat the residence, 3224 Meadows Way, Apt. 304, Chesapeake. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge.
Doris P. Wright
CHESAPEAKE -- Doris Paige Wright of the 400 block of D St. died Sept. 17, 1999. Born in Capron, Va., she was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, the J.W. Matthews Usher Board and United Order of Tents Elmi Elizabeth Chapter No. 364. Survivors include her husband, Henry Wright Sr. of Norfolk; four daughters, Sadie Paige Turner of Chesapeake, Bernice Harris of Virginia Beach, Ellen Griffin of Hampton and Marie L. Bulls of Baltimore; a son, Henry Wright Jr. of Norfolk; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Norfolk, by Dr. I. Joseph Williams. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.
Edward B. Cannon
NORFOLK -- Edward B. ``Lil Bro" Cannon, 60, of the 2800 block of Liberia Drive, died Sept. 18, 1999.
Mr. Cannon was born in Norfolk to the late George and Margaret Cannon. He was educated in Norfolk Public Schools and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret Hunter of Norfolk; brothers, William Cannon of Norfolk and Robert L. Chadwick Sr. of Chesapeake; three nieces; and one nephew.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Riddick Funeral Service by the Rev. H. Bernard Branch. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Hampton. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at 1620 Elm Ave., Chesapeake, and 2817 Liberia Drive, Norfolk, where they will assemble for the procession.

John L. Garrison
NORFOLK -- John Logan Garrison of the 1000 block of Hannah St. died Sept. 20, 1999, at Harbour Pointe Nursing Center. Born in Norfolk, he was disabled and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his parents, Susie Harris and the Rev. I.W. Garrison. He is survived by his sister, Marie Foster, and brother, Everett Garrison, both of Norfolk.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. William L. Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The remains will be ready for viewing at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. The family will assemble at noon at 7700 Armfield Ave., Apt. 339, for the procession.
Joseph L. Harvatin
NORFOLK -- Joseph ``Harvey" L. Harvatin, 60, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at a local hospital.
Born in Forest City, Pa., he had retired as an assistant calendar operator for Pantasote Co. after 32 years.
Survivors include his wife, Frances E. Harvatin; a daughter and her husband, Denise and Willy DiLoreto of Norfolk; two sons, Steven Harvatin and Danny Harvatin, both of New Jersey; two sisters, Elaine Matoushek and Marianne Ferrero and her husband, Joe; two brothers and their wives, David and Marge Harvatin, Bobby and Lil Harvatin; and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 5 p.m. Thursday at Hollomon-
Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by Gilbert Taylor. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ned Lankford
NORFOLK -- Ned Lankford, 69, of the 1800 block of St. Denis Ave., died Sept. 20, 1999. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Pretlow & Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. The family will meet at 12:30 p.m. the day of the service at the funeral home.
Henry Potts
NORFOLK -- Henry Potts, 81, of the 100 block of Hough Ave., died Sept. 17, 1999. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church Berkley.
He is survived by a daughter, Diane
Johnson of Norfolk; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and many friends including a very special friend, Catherine Nixon of Chesapeake.
A funeral will be held at noon Friday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Berkley by Dr. Charles Hart. Burial will be private. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the church at 11:30 a.m. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Friday. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley, is handling arrangements.
