NORFOLK -- Barbara E. Swinson, 77, of the 5900 block of Jerry Road, passed away Sept. 19, 1999.

Robert C. Cardwell Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Robert Council ``Bob" Cardwell Jr. entered into rest on Sept. 18, 1999, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
He was born in Leaksville, N.C., and was a Virginia Beach resident for 35 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1970 as a chief petty officer with more than 20 years of service. He was a member of Great Neck Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. He was preceded in death by a son, Destry R. Cardwell, and a sister, Marie Edwards.
He is survived by his wife, Susan B. Cardwell; three sons, Robert F. Cardwell, Gary L. Cardwell and W. Jerral Cardwell; a daughter, Nancy Lindley; two sisters, Jeanette Hart and Katie Johnson; a brother, Lee Terry; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Altmeyer Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bill Kincaid. Burial will follow privately in Altoona, Pa., at a later date. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established in the name of Bob Cardwell Jr. at Great Neck Baptist Church, 1020 General Jackson Drive, Virginia Beach, Va.
Alice M. Coleman
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Alice M. Coleman, 77, of the 3900 block of Lantana Place, departed this life in the early morning hours on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in Sentara Leigh Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Waverly, Va., and was employed at Plaza Bakery, rendering 33 years of service. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Norfolk. She was predeceased by a son, Henry D. Kirby, and a daughter, Mahalia D. Munden. She is survived by a daughter, Mary D. Cuffee of Chesapeake; a sister, Priscuilla Crawford; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, all of the Tidewater area.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday in Bethlehem Baptist Church by the Rev. H. Bernard Branch, pastor. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park. The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family welcomes friends at her daughter's home, 1017 River Birch Court, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Graves Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Charles F. Edmonds
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Charles Frederick "Fred" Edmonds, 85, died Sept. 18, 1999, following a long illness.
Fred Edmonds graduated from Maury High School and attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, now Old Dominion University. He was the only athlete to have lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track during the first 52 years of ODU. Fred was inducted into the ODU Hall of Fame in 1982. Leaving school during the Depression, he accepted a position with Texaco and retired after a 40-year career.
He was a member of Powhatan Starke Masonic Lodge No. 124 in Petersburg, Scottish Rite Bodies and Khedive Temple in Norfolk.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gertrude P. Edmonds; his devoted children, Alice Jane Edmonds and her husband, Neil Karn, Charles Frederick Edmonds Jr. and his wife, Lisa, and Jacqueline Edmonds Widgeon and her husband, Larry; grandchildren, Christian Seay, Dawn Seay, Manfred von Ehrenfried III, Frederick Kevin von Ehrenfried and Heidi Jane Schexnayder; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Newton A. Edmonds and Kenneth D. Edmonds and two sisters, Elizabeth Edmonds and Stella May Ferebee.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollomon-
Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by the Rev. Will Lowrance. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, where his mother, Mary Alice, father, Alonzo, and sibling rest in peace. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Geraldine A. Howard
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Geraldine Alice Howard, 78, of Virginia Beach and formerly of the 100 block of Halstead Drive in Moyock, N.C., died Sept. 18, 1999, in Chesapeake.
She was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, and was the widow of Walter B. Howard, who died Aug. 4, 1999. She was a member of Christian Church Uniting of Virginia Beach and the Ladies Encounter Group of the church.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Senatore of Virginia Beach; a son, Gary B. Howard of Windsor, Va.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces, Sharon Allen of Portsmouth and Virginia Ligon of Chesapeake; and a sister-in-law, Isabelle Barrett of Thunder Bay.

Nancy A. McCullough
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Nancy Ann McCullough, 47, entered into rest on Sept. 18, 1999, at her residence.
She was a homemaker and a professional volunteer. She was the current president of the Tidewater Down Syndrome Association, a longtime member of the Virginia Beach Special Olympics, and was a member of the Charlestown Woods Civic League. She was an area resident since 1971, and was a member of Atlantic Shores Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Gamble and Helen Marie Gamble.
She is survived by her husband, Larry L. McCullough; a son, Ian Paul McCullough of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Lorisa Marie McCullough of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Christine Cioccia and Jane Gamble, both of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Mark Gamble of Norfolk and Charles Gamble of Beltsville, Md.; and a special relative who raised the family, Aunt Ruthie ``Gram" Darwish Moore of Glendale, W.Va.
A funeral will be conducted by Pastor Jim Wofcale in Atlantic Shores Baptist Church, on the corner of Kempsville Road and Centerville Turnpike, at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow in Colonial Grove Cemetery in Virginia Beach. Pallbearers will be Dale McCullough, Ralph McCullough, Tim McCullough, Charles Gamble, Anthony Cioccia and Rex Bayman. The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach.

Gladys B. Rehnback
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Gladys Byrd Rehnback, 87, of the 200 block of Gatewood Ave., died Sept. 19, 1999, in her home.
Mrs. Rehnback was born in Scotts County, Va. She was the widow of Carl R. Rehnback. Mrs. Rehnback had owned and operated the Plantation Kitchen until her retirement in the 1960s.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda K. Danesi of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Carla E. White; a son, Gay Allan Rehnback; a sister, Maxine L. Bingham; a grandson, Thomas W. Gernheuser; and a great-grandson, Jessey R. Gernheuser, all of Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Princess Anne Memorial Park by the Rev. Rick Hocker. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road.
Gloria A. Santiago
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Dr. Gloria A. Santiago, 61, of the 4000 block of Bridgehampton Lane, died Sept. 17, 1999, in a local hospital.
Born in Manila, Philippines, she was a retired self-employed obstetrics and gynecology physician. She was a member of Ascension Catholic Church, the Philippine Medical Association of Tidewater and was a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Santiago practiced at DePaul Hospital, Sentara Bayside Hospital and Chesapeake General Hospital for the last 19 years. She was also involved in many charitable works. She was predeceased by her father, Santiago Agustin, and a daughter, Madelyne Santiago-Struse.
Survivors include her husband, .Arthur C. Santiago; mother, Felicidad C. Agustin of Virginia Beach; a sister, Ligaya Agustin of New Jersey; a brother, Oscar Agustin and his wife, Lourdes, of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Cecile Santiago-Carlos and husband, Don, and Rhoda Santiago-Anderson and husband, Ron, all of Virginia Beach; a grandchild, Jonathan Struse of Maryland; a son-in-law, Jim Struse of Maryland; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, by Fr. Jim Parke and Fr. Manalo. Entombment will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. A Christian wake was held Sunday at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
John W. Stephens
VIRGINIA BEACH -- John William Stephens, 74, died Sept. 17, 1999.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served with the USS Hancock.
He is survived by his wife, Zobeide ``Bea" Stephens; three brothers, Thomas D. Stephens, Ernest Stephens and Joseph Michael; two sisters, Mildred Hunsicker and Catherine Ritenour; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach. Services and interment will take place in Frederick, Md. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
Robert C. Hughes Sr.
DENDRON -- Dr. Robert Clifton Hughes Sr., 77, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Sussex County on Dec. 25, 1921, the son of the late Samuel Clarence Hughes and Alla Mae Ellis Hughes. A brother, S. Clarence Hughes Jr., of Waverly and a sister, Mary Ellis Compton, of Virginia Beach preceded him in death. He was a member of Wakefield United Methodist Church.
Dr. Hughes was a 1943 graduate of Virginia Tech and a 1950 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. Throughout his life, Dr. Hughes was an avid sports fan and an enthusiastic and devoted Virginia Tech alumnus. He interned at Lewis Gale Hospital, Roanoke, and began family practice of medicine in 1952 in Rocky Mount and Franklin County, Va.
He was a member of the original staff of Franklin Memorial Hospital, Franklin County. He served as president of the medical staff and was a member of the hospital board of trustees. He also served as medical examiner for the county.
After leaving family practice in 1974, he became a staff physician at the Veterans Administration Medical Center of Salem, Va., retiring from that facility in 1984. He served as part-time medical director of Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Virginia, Roanoke office, from 1984-89.
Dr. Hughes was a former member of the American Medical Association, the Virginia Medical Society and the Roanoke Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Hughes was an enthusiastic patriot and was proud to have served in the U.S. Army infantry during World War II in the European theater. Of his many decorations and ribbons, he was most proud of his Combat Infantry badge and the Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Faison Hughes; a son, Robert Clifton Hughes Jr. of Rocky Mount, Va.; a daughter, Lynne Smith, and granddaughter, Hannah Smith, of Boones Mill; a sister, Geneva Setien of Richmond; a brother, Jack Hughes of Waverly; three stepsons, J. Barry Threewitts of Harrisonburg, Robert F. Threewitts of Keezletown and Thomas R. Threewitts of Dendron; and five stepgrandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Wakefield United Methodist Church by the Rev. C. Randolph Duncan. The family will visit with friends at a reception in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service. The interment service, with military honors, will be held at 5 p.m. in Waverly Cemetery.
