David Franklin Davidson
TYNER -- David Franklin Davidson, 37, died July 4, 1999. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Evans Funeral Home Chapel, Edenton.
Julian A. Hooper
ELIZABETH CITY -- Julian .Aydlett Hooper, a longtime resident and local merchant, died Tuesday night, Sept. 7, 1999, at his home in the 1800 block of Rivershore Road. He was 83 years old and had had Parkinson's disease for many years.
Mr. Hooper was born in Currituck, N.C., to the late Franklin and Nancy Baum Hooper. He moved with his family to Elizabeth City when he was a young child. After receiving a business degree from Louisburg College, which he attended on a baseball scholarship, Mr. Hooper played professional baseball during the Depression years. As a catcher, he acquired the name ``Mickey" which stuck with him for the rest of his life. He was a lifelong local merchant, having opened an office supply business in the Virginia Dare Hotel Arcade in 1937. He later diversified the business, becoming a distributor of fishing tackle and other sporting goods, as well as wholesale paper products.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Hooper was a Mason and a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church. Also, he was an avid salt water fisherman, and a member of the Albemarle Anglers' Club. Other interests included major league baseball, of which he was a loyal Atlanta Braves fan, and oil painting, which he took up after his retirement.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Hazel Mayes Hooper; three daughters, Nancy Gwyn of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jane Sprague of Blacksburg, Va., and Alice Collins of Duck, N.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his dog, Podge.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Immediately following the service, the family will return to the residence to receive friends. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, 700 North Road St., Elizabeth City NC 27909, or to the Nature Conservancy, 4011 University Drive, Suite 201, Durham, NC 27707, and be earmarked for projects in northeastern North Carolina. Willis L. Jessup
HERTFORD -- Willis Langley .Jessup, 85, of the 100 block of W. Market St., died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 7, 1999, in Suffolk.
He was a native of Winfall, N.C., and the son of the late Sidney Phillips and Cornelia Nixon Jessup. Mr. Jessup was the widower of the late Elizabeth Morris Jessup and the late Bernise White Jessup. Surviving him are his daughter, Sidney Phillips Jessup of Nags Head, N.C.; his stepson, William C. ``Bill" Glover of Winfall, N.C.; and two stepdaughters, Karen G. Nuckolls of Toone, Tenn., and Kathy G. Dail of Winston-Salem, N.C. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Jessup.
His business interests included J and N Supply Co., Jessup Farms and real estate development. His career began with the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, where he developed the peanut grading system adopted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His real estate development led him to build one of the first motels on the Outer Banks.
Being an avid collector and restorer of antique automobiles, he had entries in the Great American Road Race on three occasions. He was a member of the Rolls Royce Owner's Club, the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Classic Cars of America, among others.
As an active member of the U.S. Trotters Association, he raced world-class pacers and trotters on the East Coast circuit, claiming numerous championships.
Mr. Jessup was a member and former senior warden of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hertford and was instrumental in the 1969 restoration of the historic church.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery, Hertford, by the Rev. Jack Rivers. The family will receive friends at his residence. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Perquimans County Rescue Squad or to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, E. Church St., Elizabeth City, is in charge.
Wayne C. Miller
GRIMESLAND -- Wayne Charles Miller, 78, died Sept. 8, 1999.
A native of Port Huron, Mich., Mr. Miller was a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served in the European, Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of Operation during World War II. He then served at the Navy Department in Washington, D.C., and was on the staff at the Navy Medical School in Bethesda, Md. He later served on the USS Conway during the Korean conflict before his retirement in 1960. From 1960 to 1978, he was employed as a police officer in Rockville, Md., retiring as a lieutenant. He had made his home in Grimesland since 1989 and was a member of Arlington Boulevard Baptist Church in Greenville.
Survivors include his wife, Mavis Edwards Miller; sons, Carlton Wayne Miller of Long Beach, Miss., Edward Charles Miller of Clearwater, Fla., and Timothy Lee Miller of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Carolyn Gelb of Chesapeake; a sister, Ann Fern Hitchings of Flint, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial with military honors will be in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

RICHMOND -- Elvin Alfonza ``E.A." Wright, 82, died Sept. 8, 1999, in a local hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Selma; a daughter, Eloise W. and her husband, Warren H. Walters; a son, Elvin A. Wright Jr. and his wife, Joanne; two grandsons, David C. Walters and his wife, Angela, and Stuart A. Walters and his wife, Michelle; two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Megan Walters; two brothers, Robert L. Wright of Raleigh, N.C., and Eugene Wright of Millville, W.Va.; two sisters, Ruby Wolfe of Staunton, Va., and Judy Leake of Ranson, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Wright was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Battlefield Post 9808, Belmont Travelers Senior Club and Greenwood United Methodist Church.
His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home, Staples Mill Chapel. A graveside service will be held at noon Friday at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Road, Hanover, Va. Glenn R. Watson
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Glenn R. Watson, 76, died Sept. 3, 1999.
Born in Spencer, N.C., he moved to Florida in 1984 from Virginia Beach. He retired in 1984 as a chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy after more than 20 years active duty. He served during World War II and Korea. He lived in Virginia Beach for more than 25 years, where he retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Clarksville, Tenn.; a 32nd degree Mason Scottish Rite; a noble at Egypt Shrine Temple, Tampa, Fla.; and the High-Twelve Club in St. Petersburg.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Harriet B.; brother Robert F. of Naples, Fla.; sister Rachel Leinweber of Bradenton, Fla.; and a nephew, Dr. Stephen F. Hancy of Pensacola, Fla.

CHESAPEAKE -- Ella Mae M. Chilton of Chesapeake died Sept. 14, 1999, at her residence.
She was born in Adkins, Va., and was the widow of John M. Chilton. She was a member of Cradock United Methodist Church, Cradock Women's Club and Cradock Music Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara V. Stenstrom of Asheville, N.C.; two sons, Thomas M. Chilton of Virginia Beach and John W. Chilton of Portsmouth; granddaughters, Catherine E. Carson of Slidell, La., Jennifer LaVangie of Farmville, Va., and Bridgette Stenstrom of Asheville; grandsons, William T. Chilton of Atlantic City, N.J., John W. Chilton Jr. of Denver, Colo., Brian M. Chilton of Germany, George T. Chilton of Virginia Beach; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, by the Revs. Waverly C.

CHESAPEAKE -- Lillie Belle .Nixon Parker of the 3100 block of Franklin Street passed away Sept. 12, 1999, at Chesapeake General Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Norfolk County, Mrs. Parker was a former practical nurse and a member of First Baptist Church, South Hill, Chesapeake. She was a volunteer for the Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, as well as a foster parent with more than 21 years of service. She was the first black recipient of the Indian River Ruritans' Mother of the Year Award in 1984.
She leaves to cherish her memories her 10 loving and devoted children, Patricia Turner, Elliott Parker, Treva Greene, Renee Gordon, Artenser Parker and LaSalle Parker, all of Virginia Beach, Dwight Parker, Raymonia Mitchell and Tracey Parker of Chesapeake, and Tyrone Parker of Norfolk; three sisters, Louise Collins of Norriston, Pa., Lois Nixon and Pearl Wright of New York; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, South Hill, Chesapeake, with the Rev. Michael Toliver officiating. Burial will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. NORFOLK -- Winfield K. ``Joe" Bossuot, 86, of the 400 block of Biltmore Road, died Sept. 14, 1999, at his residence.
Mr. Bossuot was born in Princess Anne County, and was a retired electrician from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 20 years of service. He was a past president of the Norfolk Chapter of AARP, and was a member of Metal Detector Club. He was Methodist.
He is survived by his wife, Callie Irene Bossuot; a daughter, Sandra Wainwright of Highland Springs, Va.; a son, Joe Bossuot of Sumter, S.C.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
