Mary B. Robinson

PORTSMOUTH -- Mary Francies Bolling Robinson, 76, of the 600 block of Phillips Ave., died Sept. 3, 1999.

Born in Portsmouth, she was a deaconess and a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Temple, where she was a member of the Senior Choir, Female Usher Board, the Widows Club and was associated with several prayer bands. She was also a member of United Order of Tents and Grand United Order of Seven Wise Men.

The widow of Deacon William Robinson, she is survived by two brothers, John C. Bolling and Eugene A. Bolling; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Cemetery by the Rev. George Henry. The family will assemble at Fisher Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Frances G. Elwood

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Frances Gray Elwood, 95, of the 1700 block of Chase Pointe Circle, died Sept. 8, 1999, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Elwood was a native of Export, Pa. She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Dr. Myron R. Elwood, and a daughter, Margery E. Kelly of Chatsworth, Calif.

Survivors include two daughters, Dolores E. Sloan and her husband, Edward, and Eunice E. Alexander and her husband, William P., all of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Manuel L. Faustino

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Manuel L. Faustino died Aug. 20, 1999, while visiting his brother in Jersey City, N.J.

He was the husband of Catherine Kilbane; father of James Benedict, James Bryan, John Robert and John Paul; and stepfather of Jessica Ledzion; brother of Daniel, Ricardo and Adela Barlan.

He was an air conditioning and heating mechanic with Smith & Keene Co., Chesapeake, and also worked as a part-time cashier at Farm Fresh in Virginia Beach. He was a member of the Church of the Ascension, Virginia Beach, where a memorial Mass will will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Please omit flowers.

A visitation was held at Greenville Memorial Home, Jersey City. Burial was in the Philippines.

Samuel C. Gould

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Samuel .Clemons Gould, 97, died Sept. 7, 1999, in Beth Sholom Nursing Home.

Mr. Gould was born in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 18, 1901, to the late Harry Gould and the late Yetta Amster Gould. He was also predeceased by his wife, Ella Goldman Gould. He was the former owner of Gould's Luggage Shop in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Survivors include his daughter, Diane Gould Muhlendorf and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Muhlendorf, of Virginia Beach; and two grandsons, Kevin Brian Muhlendorf of Washington, D.C., and Jonathan Samuel Muhlendorf of Norfolk.

A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Beth Sholom Nursing Home of Eastern Virginia, 6401 Auburn Drive, Virginia Beach VA 23464, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

Clinton L. Joyner Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Clinton Lee Joyner Jr. of the 5400 block of Cleeve Abbey died Aug. 19, 1999. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Avenue Chapel.

Mary W. Kane

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary Wellhouse Kane, 92, died Sept. 7, 1999, after a long illness.

Mrs. Kane was born in Richmond, and was the daughter of the late Lena Marie Palmer Wellhouse and Leo Joseph Wellhouse Sr. She was the widow of John F. Spain and Edwin B. Kane. She was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.

Survivors include her niece, Katherine W. White, and her nephew, Leo. J. Wellhouse; three great-nieces, Brittany N. Wellhouse, Elizabeth P. White and Bridget M. White; and her two great-nephews, Palmer J. Wellhouse and Christopher P. White, all of Richmond.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at noon Friday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Richmond. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Richmond. A Christian wake service will be said today at 7 p.m. in the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to Star of the Sea Catholic School Scholarship Fund or to St. Gregory's Catholic School Scholarship Fund.

Anna L. Kaster

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Anna L. .Kaster, 83, passed away Sept. 7, 1999.

She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Mrs. Kaster was predeceased by her husband, Joseph G. Kaster. She is survived by her daughters, Charlotte Kelleher of Virginia Beach and Elaine Coluccio of Belmont, N.C.; son James G. Kaster and wife, Madonna, of Clarksville, Ind.; sisters, Lorena, Mary, Elsie, Sister Adelaide and Agnita; brothers, George and Al; grandchildren Tracy, Joseph, Phillip, Ryan, Amy, Mike and Reid; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church by the Rev. Msgr. Thomas J. Caroluzza, celebrant. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.

Thaddeus Wilson Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- On Sept. 7, 1999, the Lord called Thaddeus Wilson Jr. home to rest. He resided at the 5500 block of Indian River Road. He was a retired truck driver and was the son of the late Thaddeus Wilson Sr. and Nancy Leola Wilson.

He is survived by six daughters, Rosa Morales of San Jose, Calif., Shirley Hope of Virginia Beach, Celestine Wilson, Patricia Jackson, Nancy Freeman and Renee Burke, and one son, Thaddeus Wilson IV, all of Norfolk; five sisters, Dorothy Jones, Vernice Bagby, Leola Lawton and Shirley Stancil, all of of Virginia Beach, and Inez Tucker of New Jersey; three brothers, Clarence Wilson, Maurice Wilson and Robert Wilson of Virginia Beach; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a very special friend, Mrs. Helen Vinson; and a host of nieces and nephews, who adored him.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at New Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. G.G. Campbell Jr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Perry Jane D. Lambert

SUFFOLK -- Perry Jane Davis Lambert, 81, of the 100 block of Maple St., departed this life Sept. 6, 1999, at her residence.

She was a native of Harnet County, N.C., and the daughter of the late Archie Cameron and Pearl Judd-Cameron. She was the wife of the late Bruce Lambert. Mrs. Lambert was the owner of the Horseshoe Cafe, located on East Washington Street. She was a member of East End Baptist Church, Suffolk.

Mrs. Lambert was affiliated with many associations, including W.W. Holland Flower Club, Nansemond Development Association, Booster Club, NAACP and East Coast Business Women's Association. She was a member of Tidewater Fair Association, Nansemond Chapter No. 31 of Virginia, Eastern Star, Household of Ruth, Daughters of Isis, Shriner Association of Portsmouth, Council of Elk's (past lawyer daughter ruler), Golden Gates Temple No. 90 (past daughter ruler and past grand ruler), past Elk's State directress of Shrine Department and a stockholder of CFH.

Survivors include a son, John Lee Davis of Fort Washington, Md.; four grandchildren, Derek Davis of Suffolk, Brett Davis of Hampton, Andrena Davis of Arlington, Va., and Kim Joyner of Suffolk; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Flonnie C. Riddle of Orange, Va.; three brothers, Rufus Cameron of Portsmouth, Ulysses Cameron of Baltimore and Archie Cameron of Greensboro, N.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at East End Baptist Church by Dr. Mark A. Croston Sr. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Crocker Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Margaret S.W. Simmons

SUFFOLK -- Margaret Sheffield Ward Simmons, 73, of the 500 block of Lexington Avenue, passed away Sept. 7, 1999, after a short illness.

A lifelong resident of Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late O.W. and Willie McDonald Sheffield. Mrs. Simmons was a member of West End Baptist Church, where, until 1986, she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She worked more than 25 years in the Norfolk School Board office as secretary to the superintendent.

Mrs. Simmons was a 1943 graduate of Suffolk High School and attended Longwood College. An avid player, she was a member of several local clubs, including 49 years in the Suffolk Bridge Club. She was a member of the Suffolk Art League and the Nansemond Suffolk Historical Society. A charming and gracious friend to everyone she met, few knew she was one of the first to hold the title of ``Miss Suffolk," an honor she won in the mid-1940s.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde Gatewood Simmons; her sons, Douglas Alan Ward, Ronald Carter Ward and his wife, Jennie; her husband's daughters, Ida Simmons, Martha Simmons and Mary Simmons Darden; her eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at West End Baptist Church by the Rev. T. Floyd Irby Jr. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk VA 23439.

Mable J. Wright

SUFFOLK -- Mable Jeanette Wright, a native of Nansemond County, died Sept. 4, 1999. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge.

Evelyn D. Brett

BOYKINS -- Evelyn Drewry Brett, 80, a native and longtime resident of Boykins, widow of Arthur C. Brett, passed away peacefully in her home Sept. 7, 1999.

She was born on the family farm near Boykins and was the daughter of the late Harry Moss and Eunice Adna Edwards Drewry. A 1937 graduate of Boykins High School, she attended State Teacher's College in Farmville, Va. Married in 1940, the family lived in Baltimore, Murfreesboro, N.C., and Boykins before moving to New Jersey in 1954. Upon retirement in 1976, Arthur and Evelyn returned to Boykins. She was a member of Boykins Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol B. Cappello and her husband, John, of Cranford, N.J.; a son, Arthur C. Brett Jr. and his wife, Anne, of Paramus; a brother, Madison Blount Drewry of Boykins; a grandson, Scott Cappello and his wife, Tina, of Cranford, N.J.; two granddaughters, Jeannette B. Annunziato and her husband, Dave, of Mahwah, N.J., and Alicia May Cappello of Cranford; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Morris Annunziato, Alyssa Marie Annunziato, Nicholas Scott Cappello and Anthony John Cappello; a niece, Bettye Matt Pridgen of Williamsburg; and many distant family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Boykins Baptist Church by the Rev. Ben Thomas. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Boykins Baptist Church, 32057 Main St., or the Boykins Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 347, Boykins, VA 23827. Wright Funeral Home, Boykins Chapel, is in charge.

J. Braxton Holcombe

COURTLAND -- James Braxton Holcombe, 81, a lifelong resident of Southampton County, died Sept. 8, 1999, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 19, 1918, and was the son of the late Clifton James and Gabie Lankford Turner Holcombe. He was the owner of J.B. Holcombe Vegetable Plants and was retired from the shipping department of Union Camp Corp. A member of Courtland United Methodist Church, Mr. Holcombe was a former member of the official board of the church and a former president of the Men's Bible Class.

Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Bunn Holcombe; a stepson, Allen C. Story of Annandale, Va.; four sisters, Bonnie H. Battle, Doris H. Bradshaw and Willis H. Barnes, all of Franklin, and Dawn H. Wright of Smithfield; and a brother, Marvin A. Holcombe of Ephrata, Pa. He was predeceased by a brother, C.J. Holcombe Jr., and a half sister, Flora T. Simone.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Courtland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert J. Parks Jr. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. The family will receive friends at the residence and suggests that memorial donations be made to Courtland UMC, 22416 Main St., Courtland VA 23837, or to a favorite charity. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge.

Jack Pope Sr.

FRANKLIN -- Jack Pope Sr., 62, a native of Franklin, died Sept. 3, 1999, at Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital, after a short illness.

He retired as a sergeant major from the U.S. Army after 30 years of service, and was a member of Jacob Chapel United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Russell Pope Sr. and Rosa Pope, and a son, Jack Pope Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Jessica Pope of Duncansville, Texas; two sons, Christopher Pope of San Antonio, Texas, and Joshua Pope of Newnan, Ga.; two sisters, Violet Terry of Arlington, Va., and Cordella ``Dee" Hundley of Williamsburg; four brothers, Russell Pope Jr. of Baltimore, John Pope of Arlington, Robert Pope of Fredericksburg and Victor Pope of Suffolk; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Stephan Adams. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Hattie Carter, 215 Holly St., Franklin. Entrusting Hands Funeral Home is in charge.

Jean H. Campbell

ELIZABETH CITY -- Jean .Hopkins Campbell, 76, of the 900 block of Riverside Ave., died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at her residence.

She was born in Portsmouth, and was the daughter of the late Leroy and Mary Julia Greene Hopkins and the widow of Charles Walten Campbell. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City Music Club, Pasquotank Arts Council, Guild of Museum Friends, North Carolina Museum of History Associates Inc., Falls Church Women's Club and the Shillelaghs Travel Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Roy Campbell Golden of Falls Church, Va., Jane Campbell Cooksey of Fairfax, Va., and Sarah Campbell of Herndon, Va.; two sons, Charles Walter Campbell III of Gaithersburg, Md., and Stephen Hopkins Campbell of Philadelphia; a brother, Beverly Greene Hopkins of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Christ Episcopal Church, 200 S. McMorrine St., Elizabeth City NC 27909. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Elevator Fund at the church.
