VIRGINIA BEACH -- Joyce Ann Hatley, 59, passed away on Sept. 6, 1999.
Joyce was a native of New Jersey and had lived in the Tidewater area for most of her life. She attended the Day Support Program through the City of Virginia Beach. She was a loving mother, sister and friend who will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her son, Robert E. Hatley; and three brothers, Richard, Frank and Michael Mikovits.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mattie L. Rawlings
FRANKLIN -- Mattie Lee Rawlings, 78, of the 300 block of Madison St., died Sept. 5, 1999.
She was born in Southampton County and was the widow of Frank V. Rawlings. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Courtland.
Survivors include three daughters, Zonia Rawlings, Fannie Rawlings and Roxie Rawlings; three sons, Matthew Rawlings, Frank Rawlings Jr., and Miller Rawlings; a sister, Mary Darden; two brothers, Willie Flythe and Clyde Flythe; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Eloise Rawlings.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, Courtland, by the Rev. Johnnie Lyons. Burial will be in Care Memorial Gardens, Courtland. Engram Funeral Home, Courtland, is handling arrangements.
Peggy N. Washburn
ZUNI -- Peggy Northrup Washburn, 67, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in Maryland.
She was the widow of Ruben E. Washburn and was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.
She is survived by daughters, Leigh Northrup and Judy Washburn; sons, Chris, Jerry, Terry and Timmy; and grandchildren, Elton, Chrissy, Cassie, Steven, Michael, Shawn and little Timmy. She was predeceased by two children, Evie Hope and Jimmy Washburn.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Tucker Swamp Church Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Donations to assist the family may be made in care of Purviance Funeral Home, P.O. Box 727, Wakefield, VA 23888.

Brown of the 1500 block of Hopkins Drive died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Guardian Care Nursing Home.
She was born in Pasquotank County, the daughter of the late John Anderson and Jennie Hill Parker. She was the widow of Ralph Brown, and a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Jurado and husband, John, of Liberty, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Brinson of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Walter Edward Brinson.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., with the Rev. Glen Greenway officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today and also immediately after the service, and at other times at the residence.

Annie M. Rutherford
SCOTLAND NECK -- Annie Mutts ``Ann" Rutherford died Sept. 5, 1999, at Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C.
Mrs. Rutherford was born in Scotland Neck, and retired as a teacher from the Scotland Neck School Board after 32 years of service. She also retired as a funeral director from E. Mutts and Son Funeral Home. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Scotland Neck. She was a former member of the Scotland Neck Teachers Association, the National Teacher Association, and the North Carolina Funeral Directors Association. She was a graduate of Bennett College, Greensboro, N.C., and she pursued additional studies at Hampton University.
Survivors include a son, Carlton Dale Rutherford of Durham; a sister, Ethel Mutts Vaughan and brother-in-law, Elvin N. Vaughan; and her nieces, Karen Norletta Vaughan of Franklin, Va., and Scoletta Mutts Stewart of Charlotte, N.C.; her great-nieces, Tameshia S. Brace and Tondra Stewart of Charlotte; her great-great-niece, Erin Brace also of Charlotte; her sisters-in-law, Clementine Mutts and Essie L. Fitzgerald; and a foster son, Carl Patterson of East Providence, R.I. She was predeceased by her parents, Annie Mitchell Mutts and Ephraim Mutts Sr., and her brothers, Ephraim Mutts Jr. and Clarence E. Mutts.
A funeral will be held at noon Thursday in Shiloh Baptist Church, Scotland Neck, by the Rev. Cooper. Burial will be in Scotland Neck Cemetery. Willoughby and Mutts Funeral Home, Scotland Neck, is handling arrangements.
Ronald D. Sawyer
RICHMOND -- Ronald Dennis ``Pete" Sawyer, 71, of the 4000 block of Britannia Road, died Sept. 6, 1999, in McGuire Veteran's Hospital, Richmond.
Born in Washington County, N.C., he was a member of Warwick Baptist Church in Richmond. He was the widower of Irene Conner Sawyer. He was a retired ceramic tilesetter and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Woodard of Chester, Va., and Diane Branham of Sandston, Va.; a son, Ronald S. Sawyer of Richmond; his mother, Dorothy Lassiter of Ahoskie, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Ronald McSwain. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Diane Wimbish
GLENDORA, Calif. -- Diane Wimbish, who lived in Virginia Beach from 1981 until 1991, passed away in Glendora on Sept. 3, 1999, after a valiant 15-year battle against cancer.
Mrs. Wimbish was born in Globe, Ariz., on June 6, 1950. She was employed by NDC Medical Center in Norfolk, and was a member of Avalon Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, David; three children, Steve, Shelley and Adam, all of Glendora; her mother, Martha Piper of Ellettsville, Ind.; and a sister, Rita Foley of Farmington, N.M.
A service was held at Oakdale Mortuary Chapel in Glendora. Memorial donations may be made to City of Hope National Medical Center, 1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010-3000.

Edward Bush
CHESAPEAKE -- Edward Bush, 78, of the 4000 block of Sun Valley Crescent, died Sept. 6, 1999, at Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.
Born in McLain, Miss., Mr. Bush was retired from Norfolk Naval Air Rework Facility after 43 years of service. He was a member of Fellowship United Church of Christ, Chesapeake, where he was an usher and member of the Men's Chorus.
He is survived by his wife, Rubye L. Bush; a son, Toeshane Bush and his wife, Delpheen A. Bush, both of Portsmouth; two sisters, Alberta Bush of Chicago and Angie
Johnson of McLain, Miss.; a brother, Hildred Bush of Chicago; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be held at noon Friday at Fellowship United Church of Christ, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Winston E. Waugh. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Friday.
