James B. Farris of 8389 Wagner Road, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at his home.

Thomas L. Fletcher
CASTLEWOOD -- Thomas Leland Fletcher, 85, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
He was born in Dickensonville, a son of the late Henry and Rachel Davis Fletcher. He was a Russell County farmer.
Surviving are a sister, Ruth Gibson of Bristol Virginia; three nephews; and two great-nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Leonard Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be Gaines Wade Dickenson, Mark Redman, Brian Kiser, Bill Higgins, Allen Jessee and Beecher Mays.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in Castlewood Funeral Home.

Joe B. Fugate Sr.
Joe Bowlin Fugate Sr., 81, of Route 3, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Scott County, a son of the late Thomas H. and Ella Bowlin Fugate. He was a retired machinist from the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Mendota and Charity Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Dora Salyers Fugate; three daughters, Pat Moore of Kingsport, Linda Laughlin of Bristol Virginia and Frances Harris of Abingdon; a son, Joe B. Fugate Jr. of Bristol Virginia; three sisters, Peggy Templeton of Gate City, Flo Stafford of
Johnson City and Lucille Hobbs of Kingsport; and a brother, Freddie Fugate of Hiltons.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City. The Rev. Johnnie Bowlin will officiate. Music will be by the Bowlin Family. Burial will be in Spurrier Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Fred Barker, Michael Grizzle, Darrell Gardner, Howard Gardner, Ricky McMurray, Regan McMurray, Dennis Franklin and Virgil Piercy.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home or any time at the residence.

LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- Funeral services for Ida Mae Ingle will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Fleenors Memorial Church by Akard Funeral Home of Bristol Tennessee. The Rev. Roger Ball will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Ingle, 91, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000.

Charles B. Orr Jr.
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Charles Bradley Orr Jr., 75, formerly of Richlands, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at the home of a son in McLean.
He was of the Protestant faith and the widower of Helene Frances Greene Orr.
Surviving are two sons, Everette B. Orr of McLean and Robert A. Orr of Fairfax; a daughter, Frances Ann O. Krell of Ellicott City, Md.; two sisters, Cleo Antone of Richmond and Patty Hichak of Alexandria; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in Wise Cemetery. Dr. Ray
Jones Jr. will officiate.

Brandon Scott Perkins
HONAKER -- Funeral services for Brandon Scott Perkins will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Gerald Lester and Luther Bowman will officiate. Burial will be in the family cemetery near the home.
Brandon Scott Perkins, 13, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Messer, Donnie Messer, Tim Baldwin, David Baldwin, David Robinette, Jeff Kinder and Jarred Hughes. Honorary pallbearers will be Josh Hess, Ryan Miller and the eighth-grade basketball team.

Dana Shipley

Johnson City Medical Center.

Dr. Joshua Sutherland Sr.
GRUNDY -- Dr. Joshua P. Sutherland Sr., a Grundy civic leader and one of the founders of Buchanan General Hospital, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was 86.
He was born in Dickenson County, a son of the late Dr. T.C. and Emma Yates Sutherland. He was a member and elder of Grundy Church of Christ. He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School and served his internship in Charleston, W.Va. He practiced medicine in Southwest Virginia from 1943 until retirement in October 1996.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a captain during World War II. He was captured Dec. 21, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge in an offensive known as the Belgium Blitz. At the time, he was a battalion surgeon for the 106th infantry. He spent the remainder of the war at a prisoner of war camp until his release in April 1945. For his service, he received the Bronze Star, the Victory Medal and the European Occupation Theater Medal. He was a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion and the Childs Gentry Post 7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Dr. Sutherland was a member of the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce, a founding member of Buchanan General Hospital, for which he served as chairman of the board of directors for more than 15 years. He was a member of Mountain Mission School Board of Trustees, Buchanan-Dickenson Medical Society and the Virginia Medical Society. He was medical examiner for Buchanan and Dickenson counties for several years. He also was a member of the Southern Medical Society and the Virginia State Board of Medicine. He served on the board for the Buchanan County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
He attended Emory & Henry College and the University of Alabama. He was a member of Sandy Valley Lodge 17 AF&AM and Kazim Temple of Roanoke. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Lonesome Pine Council of the Boy Scouts of America and a supporter of the Sequoyah Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Dr. Sutherland was a recipient of the William and Martha DeFriece Award and, in December 1976, was inducted into the Buchanan County Hall of Fame.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Nell
Smith Sutherland; two daughters, Emily S. Biddle and Betty Sutherland, both of Cynthiana, Ky.; three sons, Dr. J.P. Sutherland Jr. of Abingdon, Dr. Franklin Joel Sutherland of Grundy and Dr. William "Bill" Sutherland of Willaimsburg; two sisters, Ruth Watkins of Grundy and Blanche Arrington of Tampa, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Church of Christ. Evangelists Clarence Greenleaf and Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock with full military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
Dr. Sutherland was also preceded in death by three brothers, William Sutherland, T.C. Sutherland Jr. and Buster Sutherland.
Pallbearers will be elders and deacons of Grundy Church of Christ. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles M. Sublett, John Astor Rife, T.C. Mullins Jr., Tyler Yates, Grant Shrader, Lonnie Clevinger, Omer Bunn, Robert L. Neeley, Woodrow W. McGlothlin, Nicholas Persin, H.A. Street, Carl Puckett, Dr. Mel Heiman, Dr. Todd H. Nairn, Dr. Patrick C. Wallace, Dr. Emory H. Robinette and members of the Board of Directors of Buchanan General Hospital.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday in the church and after 1 p.m. Friday in the church, where Masonic services by Sandy Valley Lodge 17 AF&AM will be held at 7 p.m.
