Charles E. Sowder
ABINGDON -- Charles Edward "Eddie" Sowder, 53, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., a son of Minnie Stophel of Abingdon, and president of Damascus Archery Club.
He was owner and operator of Sowder Backhoe Service.
Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Alice Stevens Sowder; a son, Timmy Sowder of Abingdon; a daughter, Tammy Phillippi of Abingdon; three brothers, Johnny Sowder of Marietta, Ga., Frankie Stophel of Abingdon and Jerry Stophel of Meadowview; a sister, Ginger McIntyre of Abingdon; his grandmother, Mrs. Charles W. (Jessie) Carmack of Abingdon; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Holston Valley Baptist Church by Farris Funeral Service. The Rev. John Wesley Price and pastor Paul Ketron will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law, Vicki Sowder of Abingdon; son-in-law, Aaron Phillippi of Abingdon; and grandchildren, Justin Phillippi and Haley Phillippi.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday in Farris Funeral Service.
Radford R. Stacy
MAXIE, Va. -- Funeral services for Radford Roy Stacy will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Slate Creek Primitive Baptist Church at Hobbs Branch in Slate Creek. Elders Ezra Davis Jr., Bufford Stacy, Don Matney and Henry Mullins will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park.
Mr. Stacy, 67, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Compton, Shawn Compton, Sammy Looney, Johnny Looney, Ronnie Dales, Jimmy Dales, Roger Stacy, J.D. Adams, Ron Adams, Hassel Dotson, Michael Bailey, Freddie Maggard and Eddie Maggard. Honorary pallbearers will be James Kennedy and Dewayne Bailey.

Patricia Ann Stafos
Patricia Ann Stafos, 53, of U-7 Rice Terrace, Bristol, Va., died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at her home.
She was born in California and had lived in Bristol for the past few months.
Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie Windsor; and two sons, Troy Eugene Savoie and James Savoie.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Rick Light will officiate. The body will be cremated.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday in Weaver Funeral Home.
Clarence E. Steele
SWORDS CREEK, Va. -- Clarence E. Steele, 90, of the Pine Creek Road section, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
He was a lifelong resident of Swords Creek, Va., a son of the late James Walter and Ida B. Houchins Steele, and was a member of Pine Creek Pole Church.
He was a retired farmer and a coal miner, formerly employed with Red Ash Coal Co.
Surviving are his wife, Gaynell Miller Steele; two sons, Ralph E. Steele of Honaker and Fay A. Steele of Asheville, N.C.; three daughters, Doris Hale of Orange, Va., Glenda La Force of Pounding Mill, Va., and Ruth Chambers of Honaker; a sister, Marie Caron of Spring Hill, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. Leslie Ritchie and the Rev. Lawrence Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va.
Mr. Steele was also preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.
Pallbearers will be the following grandsons, Terry K. Hale, Garry N. Hale, Darrell G. Hale, Curtis E. Steele, Todd M. La Force, Timothy D. La Force, David Steele and Matthew Steele.

Mrs. Sykes, 84, of Route 2, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, in Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport.

EAST BERLIN, Pa. -- Zella F. Wallen, 80, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at her home.
She was born in Darwin, Va., a daughter of the late Logan P. and Sarah Arrington Mullins, and was the widow of the Rev. Kemp W. Wallen.
She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Spring Grove, Pa.
Surviving are five daughters, Gwyn D. Henson of East Berlin, Vicki B. Taylor and Debra S. Rodriguez, both of Palacois, Texas, Esther A. Devereaux of Fort Worth, Texas, and Karen J. Leighty of Union Town, Pa.; ten sons, E. Wayne Wallen of New Oxford, Pa., Anthony L. Wallen of Spring Grove, Steven D. Wallen and Dennis J. Wallen, both of East Berlin, David L. Wallen of Hanover, Pa., Jefferson P. Wallen of Fallston, Md., Paul B. Wallen of Converse, Texas, Larry J. Wallen of Aurora, Ill., Philip M. Wallen of Churchville, Md., and Donald W. Wallen of Shrewsberry, Pa.; a brother, Cecil Mullins of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Garnett Large of Clintwood, Va., Hattie Wallen of Abbottstown, Pa., and Jewel
Johnson of Blacksburg, Va.; 57 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday in East Berlin.

MEADOWVIEW -- Memorial services for Ila Headley Zanzinger will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Highlands in Meadowview by Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon.
Mrs. Zanzinger, 75, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at her home.
She was a native of Pennsylvania and had lived in Meadowview since October 1990. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Emory Women's Club. She was a tutor in literacy programs in Pennsylvania and Virginia and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Highlands.
Surviving are her husband, William Anthony Zanzinger; a son, Keith Zanzinger of Evanston, Ill.; a daughter, Dayle Zanzinger of Meadowview; and three grandchildren.

Wilma W. Barr
ABINGDON -- Wilma W. Barr, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Smyth County, a daughter of the late Wade Walker and Kathryn Mattie Weaver of Troutdale, Va., and lived most of her adult life in Abingdon. She was the widow of James E. Barr.
She retired from the
Johnson City School System, where she held several positions, and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty B. Chalkley of
Johnson City; three brothers, Kelly Weaver and Carver Weaver, both of Troutdale, and Dick Weaver of Smyrna, Del.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon by Farris Funeral Service. Pastor Frank Honeycutt will officiate. A memorial service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in St. John Lutheran Church.
Among survivors are grandchildren, Christopher D. Chalkley and Jennifer C. Chalkley, both of
Johnson City; and great-grandchild, Christopher Dylan Chalkley of Bristol.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Farris Funeral Service.
