ST. PAUL, Va. -- Laura Thelma Minton, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
She was born in St. Paul, a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah Cooper Jessee, and was the widow of Ira Minton.
Surviving are a son, Gene H. Minton of St. Paul; a sister, Mary Couch of Castlewood; a granddaughter, Wendee Minton of St. Paul; two step-granddaughters, Aimee Rash of Olin, N.C., and Caree Krider of Statesville, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Chace and Sabastian.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Jeff Bush and Herbert Scott will officiate. Burial will be in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.
Pallbearers will be Bill Bradley, Jimmy Jessee, David Jones, Todd Greear, David Rudder and Larry Joe Minton.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday in Castlewood Funeral Home.

SALTVILLE -- James "Jim" Mutter Sr., 65, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Grover C. Skaggs Jr.
Graveside services for Grover C. Skaggs Jr. will be Monday at 3 p.m. in Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel.
Mr. Skaggs, 82, of 1800 Carolina Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Helen Estep Skaggs; a son, Joel Steven Skaggs of Bristol Tennessee; a daughter, Melita Denton of Bristol Tennessee; five sisters, Lola Hughes of West Jefferson, N.C., Ruth Houck of Chattanooga, Tenn., Maxie Hutson of Kingsport, Lena Duncan of Buffalo Gap, Texas, and Peggy Houck of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandsons; a step-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Skaggs was preceded in death by a brother, Glynn B. Skaggs; and a grandson, Brian Davis Skaggs.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law, Diana Skaggs of Bristol Tennessee; son-in-law, Wayne Denton of Bristol Tennessee; grandsons, Joel Steven Skaggs II of Bluff City, Erik Jerome Skaggs of Lexington, Ky., and Brandon Wayne Denton of Bristol Tennessee; and step-grandson, Zed Daniel Shipley of Fort Benning, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Virginia Avenue Baptist Church or to Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Miss Smith, 87, of Bristol Virginia, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at her home.

Charles R. Wallace
GRUNDY -- Charles Ralph Wallace, 51, of Route 1, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of Alta Mae
Smith Wallace of Grundy and the late Robert Wallace. He was a disabled heavy-equipment operator and a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for the past three years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving three tours during the Vietname War, where he received several service awards, including three Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star and the Army Commendation Medal. He also served in the Army National Guard from 1986-92.
Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Donna Marie Hammons Wallace; a sister, Ruth W. Altizer of Grundy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Willard Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va., with full military graveside rites by American Legion Post 164 of Grundy.
Mr. Wallace was also preceded in death by a brother, Ernie Steve Wallace.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Hall, Donnie Hall, Delmer Hall, Kenny Hall, Lee Altizer, Billy Altizer, Ronald Coleman, David Clevinger and Gary Coleman. Honorary pallbearers will be Leon Altizer, Garnie Sykes, Allen Anderson, William Hammonds, Benny Hammons, and deacons and Adult Men Sunday School Class of Harman Memorial Baptist Church.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel, where a service will be held at 7 p.m.

MARION -- Annie Wymer, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of Matson Chapel of the Stone Memorial Presbyterian Church and the widow of William "Bill" Wymer.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. C.L. (JoAnn) Shuler of Marion; a granddaughter, Michelle Shuler; and a grandson, Rick Shuler.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Bradley's Funeral Home. Pastor Rick Shuler, grandson, will officiate. Burial will be in Roland Cemetery.

Mrs. Boyd, 69, of the Gardner community, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Pauline Cornett Brown, 86, of 321 South Cherokee Road, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in
Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cornett of Marion. She attended school in Laurel Springs, Va., and received a bachelor science degree from William & Mary College in Williamsburg, Va.
She taught home economics at Marion Virginia High School. She, along with her pastor husband, served in Methodist churches in Massachusetts, Indiana, New Jersey, Virginia and Tennessee, teaching all age levels from kindergarten to adult. She served as children's director for the Oak Ridge District of Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. She served as pastor's wife at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in
Johnson City from 1973-79, where she was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She served as a delegate to three World Methodist Conferences in London and Oxford, England, and Denver.
She was a member of Bible Study Fellowship in Kingsport and Gold Club of William & Mary College. She served as an officer in the United Methodist Women locally and as a conference officer. She was twice awarded a life membership in the Holston Conference for United Women for the service. She served as Dean of Holston Conference School of Missions.
Surviving are her husband, Paul E.

Reception of friends and family will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and again following the Service of Celebration. The Service of Celebration will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the church. The Revs. John Ripley and Wayne Cummings will officiate.

Arthur Clinton Dirlam Sr.
Arthur Clinton Dirlam Sr., 88, of 122 Churchill Circle, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Jan 24, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He had lived in the Bristol area for 10 years and retired as director of engineering with Ball Corp. in Muncie, Ind. He served as a board member for Family Life Ministries and participated in the Appalachian Trail Club. He was a member of Central Christian Church and the widower of Edith K. Dirlam.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur Clinton Dirlam Jr. of Southborough, Mass., and Dr. David Dirlam of Carlsbad, Calif.; two daughters, Sharon Dirlam of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Elise Dirlam-Ching of Richmond, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Central Christian Church by Weaver Funeral Home. Dr. Dan McCall and the Revs. Sid Tiller and Ross Dampier will officiate. Burial will be in Shipley Cemetery.
Among survivors are grandson and wife David and Aida Dirlam and daughter Nicole of Bristol Tennessee.
