Charles D. Edwards

Graveside services for Charles D. "Tootie" Edwards will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. in The National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn., with military honors by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975 of Bristol. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.
Mr. Edwards, 77, of 412 Mount Area Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Bristol Tennessee and a retired employee of Raytheon. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of the First Church of God.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Deel Edwards; two daughters, Debra Edwards of Bristol Tennessee and Kathy Hager of Bluff City; a son, Richard Edwards of Blountville; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Among survivors are son-in-law Lynn Hager of Bluff City and daughter-in-law Melissa Edwards of Blountville.
Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, friends, doctors at Midway Medical and his church family.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alta H. Fields

LEBANON -- Funeral services for Alta H. Fields will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in Russell County Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Fred Minnick will officiate. Entombment will be in Ketron Memorial Mausoleum.
Mrs. Fields, 78, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Russell County Medical Center.
She was a daughter of the late Sam and Minnie Harmon and a member of Bascom United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Curtis F. Fields; a son, James A. Fields of Chilhowie, Va.; a sister, Helen Hughes of Fredericksburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Beverly Simmons and Jason Fields, both of Dallas, and Cathy Fields of Manassas, Va.; and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Fields was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Kendall Fields, Doyle Fields, Jerry Fields, Randy Herndon, Robbie Herndon, Bill Sam Price, Harry Ferguson Jr., Billy J. Rhea and Kenneth Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Dwight Bailey, John Boardwine, Bill Akers, Billy Dean Fields, Carter Ferguson and Claude Robert Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Russell County Funeral Home.

Worley L. Franks

GLEN BURNIE, Md. -- Worley L. Franks died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.
He was born in Dante, Va., a son of the late John Lloyd and Martha Stanford Franks, and lived in Maryland for the past several years. He was a former employee of Consolidated Coal Co.
Surviving are his wife, Venus J. Franks; five daughters, Margaret M. Gray, Janet L. Woodridge, Rebecca P. Ellers, Kathy D. Kamsch and Regina A. Vougt; a son, Worley C. Franks of Maryland; three brothers, Jerry and Benny Franks of Maryland and Wiley Franks of Castlewood, Va.; two sisters, Pauline Kilgore of Bland, Va., and Bertha Rose of Clintwood; eight granddaughters; a grandson; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Elkridge, Md.

Edith D. Hale

Funeral services for Edith Darter Hale will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Blevins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Fred Dearing will officiate. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Hale, 89, of Bristol Tennessee, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. before the service Friday in Blevins Funeral Home.

Ella J. Helton

BLUFF CITY -- Funeral services for Ella Joan Helton will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church by Weaver Funeral Home. The Rev. Bill Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Rooty Branch Cemetery.
Mrs. Helton, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in Wellmont Hospice House.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Lester, Johnny Woodby, Charles Harris, Richard Blaylock, Dan Alan Helton and Donald Collins.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary S. Miller

Funeral services for Mary Sexton Miller will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel in Abingdon. The Rev. Herman Cress will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Miller, 71, of Anderson St., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at her home.
Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Clyde T. Moore

BLOUNTVILLE -- Graveside services for Clyde Thomas Moore will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Tri-Cities Memory Gardens by Akard Funeral Home of Bristol. The Rev. John Rayburn will officiate.
Mr. Moore, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James S. Moore

ABINGDON -- Graveside services for James Samuel "Sam" Moore will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Mr. Moore, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at his home.
Farris Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Etta Ray

OAKWOOD, Va. -- Funeral services for Etta Ray will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy. Pastor Gerald K. Lester and evangelist Peerman Lester will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va.
Mrs. Ray, 72, of the Dismal Section of Buchanan County, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
She was born in Pike County, Ky., a daughter of the late John Ray and Lizzie Tackett Ray, and attended Living Word Outreach Church in Pilgrim Knob, Va.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Angle Ray; two sons, James Edward Ray and William Melvin Ray, both of Oakwood; a sister, Mary Damron of Caney Creek, Ky.; a brother, George Ray of Caney Creek; and a grandson.
Mrs. Ray was also preceded in death by a son, Sammy Ray; a granddaughter, Valerie Anne Ray; and three sisters, Edna Damron, May Ray and Alice Ray.
Among survivors are daughters-in-law, Rosalie Ray and Sharon Ray, both of Oakwood; and grandson, James Samuel Ray.
Pallbearers will be Peck Ray, David Hagerman, Leslie Damron, Wendall Damron, Gerald Collins and Noah Newsome. Honorary pallbearers will be Feddie Newsome, Robert Damron and James Samuel Ray.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home, where services will be held at 7 p.m. in the chapel.
Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Rhoten

BIG STONE GAP -- Paul Rhoten, 84, of the Wildcat Community, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at his home.
He was born in South Carolina, a son of the late Henry Rhoten and Alice Maynard Rhoten, and came to Big Stone Gap at age 19. He worked for Stonega Coke and Coal Co. and retired from U.S. Steel in Lynch, Ky., with 36 years of service.
He was a member of UMWA District 20, Local 7425, and a member of Robinette Chapel Church in Big Stone Gap.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Irene C. Rhoten; two daughters, Brenda R. Cornett of Big Stone Gap and Teresa Coffman of Kingsport; three sons, Roy Rhoten of Kingsport and Ricky Rhoten and R.W. Rhoten, both of Big Stone Gap; three sisters, his twin Pauline Lawson of Kingsport, Ida Lawson of Big Stone Gap and Eva South of Eden, N.C.; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Robinette Chapel Church, Route 3, Big Stone Gap by Holding Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Childress and pastor Greg DePriest will officiate. Burial will be in Flores Cemetery, Route 3, Big Stone Gap. The body will be at the church one hour before service.
Mr. Rhoten was also preceded in death by several sisters; and a brother.
Among survivors are sons-in-law, Jerry Cornett of Big Stone Gap and Larry Coffman of Kingsport; daughters-in-law, Debbie Rhoten of Kingsport and Edie Rhoten and Dianna Rhoten, both of Big Stone Gap; grandchildren, Kellie Rhoten-Garcia, Tabbatha Cornett Hurd, Todd Russell, Brad Coffman, Trina Coffman Hanzlik, Nikie Rhoten, James Rhoten and Natasha Rhoten; great-grandson, Kristopher Rhoten-Garcia; four special caregivers, Susan Davis, Laverne Meade, Barbara Mosier and Rebecca Cooper; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers will be members of Robinette Chapel Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Russell, Brad Coffman, James Rhoten, Bobby Joe Dotson, Ralph Lawson, Ronald Lawson, Lonnie Lawson, Clark Lawson and Kristopher Rhoten-Garcia.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Holding Funeral Home.

Richard Edwin Alvis Sr.

MACON, Ga. -- Richard Edwin Alvis Sr. died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at the home of a daughter.
He was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., a son of Mabel Fugate Alvis and Oscar B. Alvis Sr. He had lived in Kingsport most of his life and in Macon for the past two years. He attended Litz Manor School and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. armed forces, retiring from the U.S. Naval Reserves after 26 years. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Co. after 36 years of service and was a member of Wheeler United Methodist Church in Blountville, where he held executive offices. He was a life member of VFW Post 3382 of Kingsport.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mary Ellen Cole Alvis; two daughters, Pamela A. Cox of Blountville and Linda A. Rothwell of Macon; a son, Richard E. Alvis Jr. of Olathe, Kan.; a brother, Oscar B. Alvis Jr. of Kingsport; three sisters, Louise A. Dickson of Johnson City, and Georgia A. King and Dolores A. Perkins, both of Kingsport; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 8 p.m. in Oak Hill Funeral Home in Kingsport. The Rev. Dennis Loy will officiate. military graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery by VFW Charles DeWitt Byrd Post 3382.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home or any time at the residence of daughter Mrs. John A. (Pamela) Cox of Blountville.

Clyde Bailey

HURLEY -- Clyde (Strong) Bailey, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in a Kingsport hospital.
He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Green and Susie Marrow Bailey. He was a retired coal miner and a member of Knox Creek Church of God.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Kathleen Gibson Bailey; three sons, Corkey Bailey, Hassell Bailey and Larry Bailey, all of Hurley; three daughters, Mrs. Ray (Anita) Blankenship and Mrs. Jerry (Retia) Hall, both of Hurley, and Mrs. Timmy (Bubs) Nichols of Wardell; two sisters, Edith Litchfield of Hurley and Millie Marcum of Red Jacket, W.Va.; a brother, Zeldon Bailey of Mentor, Ohio; four granddaughters; 10 grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at noon in Knox Creek Church of God by Virginia Funeral Home in Grundy. The Revs. Doug Blankenship, Randy Belcher, Henry Rowe and Charlie Kennedy will officiate. Burial will be in Eli Blankenship Cemetery in Hurley.
Pallbearers will be James Gibson, Luther Gibson, Ray Blankenship, Jerry Hall, Timmy Nichols, Randy Cole, Roger Hagerman, Benny Lester and Edgar Blankenship Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons and a great-grandson.
The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church, where a service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Virginia Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
