John D. Ratliff Jr.
ABINGDON -- John Dewey Ratliff Jr., 78, formerly of Buchanan County, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Va.
He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late John Dewey and Buggie Looney Ratliff. He had lived in Buchanan County several years before moving to Pennsylvania and Abingdon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the 91st Infantry Division serving in the European Theater. He was a retired employee of the Army Depot in Tobyhanna, Pa., and the widower of Mary Agnes Mooney Ratliff.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jean Wiley of Southhampton, Pa., and Charlene Bearden of Gambrills, Md.; a son, Paul Ratliff of Hayes; four sisters, Virginia Boyd of Vansant, Latragna and Lorene Jantzen, both of Bristol Virginia, and Loretta Albert of Annapolis, Md.; six brothers, Curtis E. Ratliff and Frank H. Ratliff, both of Abingdon, Ralph C. Ratliff of Rosedale, Clinton G. Ratliff of Vansant and Claude Ratliff of Falls Church; eight grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. Evangelist Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Ratliff Family Cemetery on Deskins, Vansant, with full military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
Mr. Ratliff was also preceded in death by two sisters, Faye and Ruth Ratliff.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Ratliff, James Ratliff, Butch Bearden, Jim Ratliff, Bryan Ratliff and Jeffery Wiley.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel, where a service will be held at 7 p.m.

Daisy Reynolds
FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Daisy Reynolds, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000.
She was born in Tazewell County, Va., a daughter of the late Charles E. and Dovie Harman. She had lived in Fort Pierce, Fla., for the past 45 years. Before retirement, she was employed with Dan McCarty School for 21 years in the food services department. She was the widow of Tase Reynolds.
Surviving are two daughters, Carol Davis of Cedar Bluff and Jon Webb of Fort Pierce; a sister, Earlene
Brown of Bluefield, Va.; three grandchildren, Steve Davis, Kim Ringstaff and Melissa Woodford; and four great-grandchildren, Jonah and Trent Davis and Cain and Cassie Ringstaff.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell by Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands. The Rev. Eddie Noe will officiate.
Mrs. Reynolds was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosa Mae Harman; and a brother, Charles E. Harman Jr.
Among survivors are sons-in-law, Ralph Davis of Cedar Bluff and Bob Webb of Fort Pierce.
There will be no visitation in the funeral home. The family may be contacted at the home of Ralph and Carol Davis in Steelesburg, Va., after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Richard L. Robinette Sr.
CINCINNATI -- Richard Lee Robinette Sr. died in early December 1999.
He was a son of the late Daniel and Irna Salyers Robinette. He was an instructor and trustee of Plasterers Apprenticeship Program for more than 25 years. He served as president of Plasterers Union Local 1.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret McConnell Robinette; a son, Richard Robinette Jr. of Cincinnati; a daughter, Joan Schumacher of Cincinnati; two sisters, Betty R. Fogleman and Linda Robinette, both of Cincinnati; and a brother, Jerry Robinette of Georgia.
Burial was held in Springdale, Ohio.

Carolyn Rutherford
Carolyn "Connie" Rutherford, 64, of 100 Robin Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in Wellmont Hospice House.
She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a daughter of the late Willard Kennedy and Margaret Kennedy Barker. She taught in Bristol Virginia Public School System for 34 years and was a member of Virginia Avenue Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Floyd Rutherford; a son, Steve Rutherford of Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Chris Lewis of Bristol Virginia and Pam Shelton of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Bill Kennedy of Huntington, N.H.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church by Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Dilks and pastor Lloyd J.
Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Among survivors are grandchildren Tyler and Lauren Rutherford, both of Bristol Tennessee; a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Rutherford of Bristol Tennessee; and her stepmother, Mary Kennedy of Huntington, N.Y.
Pallbearers will be Bart Poe, Phil Simmons, Bill Rutherford, Greg Fleenor, Bert Jasper and Ted Ball.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in Oakley-Cook Funeral Home.
Lucille B. Surber
GLADE SPRING -- Lucille Blevins Surber, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was born in White Top, Va., and lived most of her life in Glade Spring. She was a member of Glade Spring Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 30 years.
Surviving are her husband, Berkley Surber; two sons, Fred Surber and Jeff Surber, both of Bristol Virginia; a sister, Gay Poston of Marion; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Stephen Turner and Paul
Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery.
Among survivors are grandchildren, Gary Surber, Jason Surber and Wesley Surber.

William N. Sword
SALTVILLE -- William N. "Bill" Sword, 70, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was a son of the late Walter B. and Gertrude Sword of Saltville. He was a U.S. Army veteran and employed with Olin Corp. for 18 years.
Surviving are his wife, Wanoka "Oakie" Sword; two sons, Kyle Sword and Richard Sword, both of Saltville; three daughters, Carol Nutter and Kay Frye, both of Saltville, and Cindy Sword of the home; a sister, Freda Olinger of Saltville; four brothers, James Sword, Pete Sword and Eddie Sword, all of Saltville, and Jerry Sword of North Carolina; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home. The Revs. David Mumpower and Robert Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Elizabeth Cemetery.
Mr. Sword was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter "June" Sword; a sister, Lois Comer; and a grandson, Joshua M. Sword.
Among survivors are sons-in-law Rusty Nutter and Jody Frye, both of Saltville; daughters-in-law Lesa Sword and Stacy Sword, both of Saltville; grandchildren Tim Nutter, Valerie Nutter, Ryan Nutter, Jordan Sword, Kylie Sword and Kelli Frye, all of Saltville; and special friend Ernie Montgomery of Saltville.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Olinger, Ernie Montgomery, Jeff Comer, Brandon Gates, Ronnie Harris and Mike Olinger.

GLADE SPRING -- Jason Todd "Jay Tee" Taylor, 19, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was a son of John and JoAnne Brannon Taylor of Glade Spring, a freshman at Virginia Intermont College and a 1999 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, where he was a participant in the school athletic program. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving, besides his parents, are a sister, Amanda Leigh Seymore of Glade Spring; grandmother, Marie Polly "Mamaw Polly" Bowers Brannon of Abingdon and Hazel W. "Nannie Taylor" Taylor of Meadowview.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Glade Spring Presbyterian Church by Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon. The Rev. Timothy O. Bird will officiate. Burial will be in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery.
Among survivors are a special friend, Sara Stiltner of Meadowview; and several cousins, aunts, uncles, great-aunts and great-uncles.
The family is especially appreciative of all the teachers, coaches and friends that touched Jay Tee's life.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Farmer, Andy Puckett, Lance McGlocklin, Chad Pennington, William Trogdon, Jonathon McGlocklin and Josh Saddler. Honorary pallbearers will be very special cousins and teammates and classmates of Patrick Henry High School and Virginia Intermont College.

Harold Lee Trivett
Graveside services for Harold Lee Trivett will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Glenwood Cemetery with military honors by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975 of Bristol Tennessee. Those attending may meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
Mr. Trivett, 65, of Bristol Tennessee, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at his home.
Pallbearers will be Timothy Trivett, Mark Peltier, Ricky Trivett, Corey Callahan, Joey
Jones and Gail Jones.
