Edgar Bacon
JONESVILLE, Va. -- Edgar Bacon, 82, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Lee County, a son of the late Drury L. and Patsy Ely Bacon, attended school in Lee County and graduated from Flatwoods High School in 1935. He attended Hiwassee College, where he was a member of the student council, the debating team and manager of the basketball team. After graduating with honors from Hiwassee in 1937, he returned to Lee County and taught school for three years before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. A year later, he relieved his commission as a second lieutenant and began pilot training in June 1943, receiving his wings in February 1994. In June 1994, he began a tour of duty in the Pacific Islands and in January 1945 his plane was shot down over Russia. He became a prisoner of war for five months.
In 1948, he received his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School in Charlottesville, graduating order of the coif. He opened law practice in Jonesville and retired in 1996 after 48 years of practice. He served on both state and district bar councils. He was elected commonwealth attorney of Lee County in 1951 and appointed to a second term in the mid 1950s. In 1965, he was elected to the first of three terms in the Virginia House of Delegates. He did not seek re-election in 1971.
In 1984, he was appointed to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for the first of two four-year terms, the maximum allowable. He was on the Board of Directors of
Powell Valley National Bank, advisory committee for Clinch Valley College and taught Sunday School at First United Methodist Church of Jonesville, where he was a member.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; three daughters, Diane Bruner and Jan Mosley, both of Jonesville, and Gwen Pendergraft of Corbin, Ky.; a brother, Drury Bacon of Duffield; a sister, Mary Porter of Radford, Va.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in First United Methodist Church of Jonesville by Arney-Mullins Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. John W. Bardsley and the Rev. Brad Scott will officiate. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in C. Bascom Slemp Auditorium at Lee High School.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Jonesville First United Methodist Church Building Fund, University of Virginia at Wise, Hiwassee College or the Jonesville Rescue Squad.

Jeffrey Blevins
Funeral services for Jeffrey Paul "Hoss" Blevins were conducted Friday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Walter Statzer officiated. Burial was in Mendota Cemetery.
Mr. Blevins, 46, of 11297 Goose Creek Road, Bristol, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his home.
He was employed by R.M. Rhea Painting for 26 years.

Helen M. Bowser
GLADE SPRING -- Graveside services for Helen Gobble Bowser will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery by Farris Funeral Service. The Rev. Wayne Parsons will officiate. Those attending should gather at the cemetery for the service.
Mrs. Bowser, 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at her home.

Stella Bradley
RICHMOND -- Stella Bradley, 87, formerly of Castlewood, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999.
She was a daughter of the late B.B. and Callie Cox Keith and lived in Richmond for several years. She was the widow of James Russell Bradley.
Surviving are a daughter, Janice Hock of Richmond; three sons, James H. Bradley of Florida, Donald R. Bradley of Colonial Beach and David M. Bradley of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Thelma Ruff of Bristol Virginia and Edith Holland of Augusta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Huff-Cook Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood. The Rev. Johnny Branch will officiate. Burial will be in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday in Huff-Cook Funeral Home.
Mae C. Chafin
CASTLEWOOD -- Graveside services for Mae C. Chafin will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Temple Hill Memorial Park.
Mrs. Chafin, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, in Russell County Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be Buford Jessee, Allen Jessee, Don Chafin, Dean Chafin, Bernard Chafin and Mike Chafin. Honorary pallbearers will be Dewey Chafin, Wilson Jessee, Woody Hackney, Rick Hackney, Clayton Chafin, Eddie Chafin, Allen Chafin, Mark Hackney, Roger Meade and Elmer Saddler.

Earl C. Coalson
Funeral services for Earl C. Coalson will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the graveside in Shelby Hills Cemetery. The Rev. John A. Thrasher will officiate.
Mr. Coalson, 88, of Grand Court, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 29. 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Fred Crumley
ABINGDON -- Fred Crumley, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in
Green Springs Rest Home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Farris Funeral Service.
He was born in Bristol Virginia and had lived in New York City most of his adult life before moving to Abingdon 10 years ago. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he was organist. He served in the armed forces.
There are no surviving family members.
Sudie F. Gray
Sudie Frances Gray, 93, of 1000 Barker St. Extension, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and retired from Big Jack Manufacturing Co. She was of the Baptist faith and the widow of Dennis E. Gray.
Surviving are two sons, Paul Gray of Watauga, Tenn., and Fred J. Gray of Bristol Tennessee; three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Margie) Francis, Mrs. Billy (Helen) Staubus and Ruth Ann Morton, all of Bristol Tennessee; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Johnny Dillard will officiate. Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Glenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. before the service Sunday in the funeral home or any time at the home of daughter Margie Francis, 1003 Barker St. Extension, Bristol, Tenn.

Worley H. Grizzel
GATE CITY -- Funeral services for Worley H. Grizzel will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday in Prospect United Methodist Church by Weaver Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Large will officiate. The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Saturday. Graveside services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Holston View Cemetery. The Rev. Wrightly Salling will officiate.
Mr. Gizzel, 79, of the Yuma community, Route 3, Box 58, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Indian Path Hospital.
He was born in Russell County, Va. He was a retired line foreman with Appalachian Power Co. in Gate City and attended Prospect United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of Yuma Ruritan Club and served twice as Southwest Virginia district governor of Ruritan National, where he initiated membership of 20 new Ruritan Clubs in Southwest Virginia. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He served on the Board of Directors of Scott County Farm Bureau and was a former supervisor with the Scott County Board of Supervisors, representing District One.
Surviving are his wife, Sallie Edwards Grizzel; a son, Hugh Grizzel of Kingsport; a sister, Lillie Ball of Bristol Tennessee; a brother, Tivis Grizzel of Cleveland, Tenn.; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law Barbara Grizzel of Kingsport; granddaughters Mrs. Jason (Deana) Moore and Kara Grizzel, both of Kingsport; and great-grandson Christian Moore of Kingsport.
Pallbearers will be Edsel Bellamy, Johnny Thacker, Ivan Taylor, Hagan Hartgrove, Burl Jones, N.W. Wininger and Doyle Alley.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in Prospect United Methodist Church.

William Grizzle
LEBANON -- William "Will" Grizzle, 91, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Russell County Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a retired farmer.
Surviving are a sister, Loney Sutherland of Grundy; and two brothers, Frank Grizzle of Cleveland and Ranzy Grizzle of Lebanon.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 8 p.m. in Russell County Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Duane Musick will officiate. Burial will be Monday in Grizzle Family Cemetery on Weavers Creek.
Mr. Grizzle was preceded in death by two brothers, Ollie Grizzle and Steve Grizzle; and three sisters, Virgie Koggoss, Bertie
Jones and Nannie Sutherland.

Oma S. Johnson
SCOTT COUNTY, Va. -- Funeral services for Oma S.

Mrs. Johnson, 98, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at the home of a granddaughter in Church Hill, Tenn.
