Charlotte L. (Peay) Moore, age 54, of Richmond, died Monday, July 2, 2001. In spite of prolonged health problems, she was a devoted and a hard working secretary covering three different offices with the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services for twenty years as well as a long time employee of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. She was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma B. Denton and her husband, George Moore. She is survived by her brother, Phillip Terry Peay of Oakland, Calif.; three aunts, Ellen Bawsell, Annie Albright, Eva Davidson; mother-in-law, Ethel Moore; and her two devoted shelties, Sable and Topaz; and many friends. Carolyn Ann Muse, 58, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, July 9, 2001. She was preceded in death by two sons, Herman "Stuart" Chiles Jr. and Rickie Lee Chiles. Helen A. Nantz, age 86, of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2001 while in residence at Elizabeth Adam Crump Manor. She was preceded in death by her husband, I. Rufus Nantz and is survived by her children, Joy N. Starkey, Jeannie N. Clayton, I.R. (Rudy) Nantz Jr., and Bonnie N. McAllister; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and her sister Anne A. Orren of Cornelius, N.C. Mrs. Nantz was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Jonathan Oskinis, J.R. Tucker graduate and Clemson University student, departed this life on Saturday, July 7, 2001. He was just short of his 22nd birthday. His life will be honored with a service on Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 11220 Nuckols Rd. at 6:30 p.m. His remains will be put to rest in Connecticut at a private ceremony. Jonathan was loved by many and will be missed dearly. May God bless his soul with eternal life.

Julian D. Peace, age 86, of King William, died July 9, 2001. Preceded in death by his wife, Alma M. Peace. Survived by a son, James D. Joseph Randolph Pittman Sr., 76, of Dunnsville, passed away July 10, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Glenyss Grizzard Pittman; three sons, Dr. Rev. Joseph Randolph Pittman Jr. of Oxford, N.C., Jimmie Lee Pittman Sr. of Glen Allen and Michael Glenn Pittman of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters. He was a member of Ephesus Baptist church, Dunnsville and served as a deacon at both Glen Allen Baptist Church, Glen Allen and at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Beaverdam. He retired from Lawrence Motor Company after 36 years of service as parts manager. He served faithfully in the United States Navy during World War II upon both the Battleship USS New York and the Heavy Cruiser USS Canberra. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 12 at Ephesus Baptist Church. Elisabeth Katherine Ross, 88, of Varina, died Monday, July 9, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert A. Ross. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Ross Ward Matro; four grandchildren, Jennifer Fugman, Robert Adams-Ward, Mary Israel and Victoria Matro; four great-grandchildren, Julliet, Egan, Ricelen and Joshua; one brother, John Offerman. Mrs. Ross was a retired employee of Miller & Rhoads and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 233. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Cora Mae Shearin, 68, of Richmond, died Sunday, July 8, 2001. She is survived by two brothers, Charles Lee Shearin and George Shearin, both of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and a special circle of friends. Miss Shearin was retired from the City of Richmond and was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Ella Davis Stephens, 91, of Bumpass, passed away July 10, 2001. She was the widow of Ralph H. Stephens. Hope "Betty" Harris Stirling passed away at CJW Medical Center on July 10, 2001. Betty grew up in Biddeford, Maine and during WWII married her high school sweetheart and for the next 20 years traveled with him around the world as a military wife. She was one of the first American wives to travel to North Africa after the war was over and gave birth on November 25, 1946 to the first American baby born in Algiers, Africa. She was a faithful Gray Lady of the Red Cross at various military hospitals, was active in the Officer's Wives Clubs, to include modeling in various fashion shows, a Communicant of Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, the Old Dominion Garden Club and an accomplisher hostess who loved to entertain her friends. She leaves her huband of 58 years, Major James R. Sterling (U.S. Army ret.); two sons, James H. Stirling and wife, Julianne, Robert M. Stirling and wife, Dorotha; her sister, Mae Barlow; her brother, Frank Harris; two grandchildren, Elissa Thompson and Brad Field and many friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday the 13 of July at 11 a.m. at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church with Rev. David Teschner, Rector and Rev. Dr. Boston M. Lackey Jr. Rector Emeritus officiating.
