HAZEL PARK, Mich. -- Pauline Evelyn Whitaker Baer, 67, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998.
She was the widow of Ted Baer.
Survivors include three daughters, Tina Teed, Vickie Baer and Mrs. Peter (Katherine) Evangelista; a sister, Peggy Cormeir; a brother, Robert Whitaker; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday in Michigan.

RICHLANDS -- Lenward C. "Hook" Ball, 82, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in a Richlands hospital.
He was a native of Tazewell County and was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA Local No. 1640.
He was a member of Richlands Tabernacle Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Margie Helen Webb Ball; five daughters, Mrs. Samuel (Shirley) Smith, Glen Allen, Va., Mrs. Hobert (Phyllis) Stilwell, N. Tazewell, Va., Mrs. Roger (Sue) Newberry and Mrs. Ronald (Judy) Bales, both of Richlands, Mrs. Marvin (Connie) Houchins, Pendleton, S.C.; three sons, Ronnie Ball, Graham, N.C., Donnie Ball, Greensboro, N.C., and Dean Ball, Cedar Bluff; a sister, Mrs. Roy (Charlotte) Compton, Mansfield, Ohio; a brother, Sterling Ball, Kernersville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Naomi R. Bays
LEBANON -- Naomi Ruth Bays, 84, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Heritage Hall, Tazewell.
She had been a resident of Heritage Hall for many years, was the widow of Austin B. Bays; and was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Kasparian, San Antonio, Texas, Ruby Kane, Mechanicville, N.Y., and Mary Romer, Rock Hill, S.C.; three sons, Harold Bays, Lebanon, Bobby Bays, Vidalia, Ga., and Charles Bays, Salem, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

William Coltrane
EMORY, Va. -- William Coltrane, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
He had been a resident of Emory since his retirement, a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and, most currently, a member of Emory United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Men.
Mr. Coltrane was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, and retired from U.S. Gypsum after 45 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hill Coltrane; three daughters, Rebecca Greening, Lexington, N.C., Ann Hurt, Danville, and Elizabeth "Bettie" Coltrane, Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Rebecca Gobble
ABINGDON -- Mrs. Rebecca "Ann" Gobble, 51, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Russell County, had lived most of her life in Washington County, Va., and was a member of the Barnes Chapel Church.
She was a former employee of Columbus McKinnon Corporation.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Dean Gobble; two sons, Gary Dean Gobble and Eddie Lynn Gobble, both of Abingdon; a daughter, Lisa Ann Lane, Abingdon; a brother, Jimmy Fields, Abingdon; and seven sisters, Loretta Reynolds, Eileen Poston, Joyce Keith, Sheila Spencer and Virginia Fields, all of Abingdon, Sue Fields, Meadowview, and Marie Wooten, Lebanon.

Charmie S. Gross
BLUFF CITY -- Charmie Lucille Shaffer Gross, 81, of 162 Old Silver Grove Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County.
She attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was the widow of C.W. "Doc" Gross.
Survivors include five daughters, Lakie Rowena Taylor, Nokomis, Fla., Margie Laeuna Case, Nell Chapman, Gerry Dollar and Christine Dollar, all of Bluff City; four sons, Cecil O. Gross, Kenneth A. Gross, Dallas Gross and Mike Gross, all of Bluff City; a sister, Bertha Connatser; 34 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary R. Hensley
KINGSPORT -- Mary Ruth Hickam Hensley, 82, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1998, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a member of Arcadia United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and a member of United Methodist Women. She was active in the PTA and the Arcadia Ruritan Club.
She was employed with Holston Defense during World War II, and later co-owned and operated Jack's Market on Bloomingdale Road.
Mrs. Hensley was the widow of Charles "Jack" Hensley.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Emma "Sis" Brackett, Kingsport; a son, Tom Hensley, Troy, Tenn.; two sisters, Mabel Nottingham and Grace Blackburn, both of Kingsport; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Melville L. Kress
PINEY FLATS -- Melville Lewis Kress, 92, of 5461 Carlton Lane Extension, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Wellmont Hospice House.
He was a native of Pittsburgh and had lived in Piney Flats for the past 51 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Marie Kress; a son, Kenneth Kress, Hollywood, Fla.; a stepson, Ray J. Smith, Michigan; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and three step-grandchildren.
A private service will be held at a later date by the family.

Claude Lasley
LEBANON -- Claude Lasley, 75, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a retired foreman with Virginia Department of Transportation after 47 years of service.
He was a charter member of Hansonville Baptist Church serving as assistant pastor, Sunday school superintendent and trustee.
He was also a member of Russell County Gideon Camp.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rosa Monk Lasley, Lebanon; five daughters, Virginia Hubbard, Richmond, Jean Davis and Geneva Baldwin, both of Abingdon, Patricia Beavers, Honaker, and Barbara Bailey, Lebanon; three sons, Bernard Lasley, Abingdon, Claude A. Laslie and Jeff Lasley, both of Lebanon; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Hughes and Betty Robinson, both of Lebanon, and Mary Hess, Spartanburg, S.C.; three brothers, Earl Lasley, Wheeling, W.Va., and Robert Lasley Jr. and George Lasley, both of Lebanon; 26 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
