CHRISTIANSBURG -- Helen Allen Williams, 84, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999.
She was a native of Blacksburg, Va.
She was a graduate of Blacksburg High School, attended Virginia Tech and graduated from St. Lukes School of Nursing, Richmond. She practiced nursing in several hospitals throughout the United States, and retired in 1976 as Director of Nursing at Park Avenue Hospital, Norton.
She attended the Edgemont Christian Church and was a member of the Belmont Community Club.
Survivors include her husband, James E. Williams; a daughter, Deborah Whitt, Big Stone Gap; a son, Allen "Zeke" Williams, Christiansburg; five grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Elmore, Wytheville and Virginia Crockford, Richmond; two brothers, Dan Allen, Salem, Hugh Ledford Allen, Bristol, Tenn.; a brother-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

MARION -- John Charles Zingale, 34, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Survivors include his mother, and step-father, Betty and Thomas Harrison, Marion; two sisters, Laura Dygert, Charleston, S.C., and Christy Robin Campbell, Marion; and an uncle.

Harold L. Benfield Sr.
MENDOTA -- Harold Lloyd Benfield Sr., 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Ingalls, N.C., had lived in Mendota most of his life, was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended King College.
He was a retired construction millwright and a member of Local Union 1544, of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
Mr. Benfield was a member of Washington County Democratic Committee and was active in Mendota Community affairs. He was a member of Mendota Masonic Lodge No. 174, a member of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Virginia, Lodge 78, and a member of
Johnson Commandery No. 14.
He was a charter member of Mendota Community Association and a member of Mendota United Methodist Church for 45 years.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Millard Benfield; two daughters, Mrs. Oscar (Laura K. Benfield) Harris, Mendota, and Mrs. Ronald (Lisa Benfield) Edwards, Gate City; a son, Harold L. "Benny" Benfield Jr., Kingsport; three sisters, Pauline Greer and Frankie Cornett, both of Elizabethton, and Lee VanderSteel, Alpine, N.J.; two brothers, Samuel Benfield, Mohton, Pa., and Berlin Benfield, Marietta, Ga.; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Miss Ida Mae Boling, 89, of 254 Cedar Lane, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Cambridge House.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a retired employee of the American Thread Company and a member of Beidlemen Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three sisters-in-law; three nieces; three nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Giles E. Combs Jr.
WISE -- Giles E. Combs Jr., 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at his home. He was the former owner of Combs Supply Company, a former employee of Lonesome Pine International Raceway, Coeburn, and a retired employee of Austin Powder Company.
He was a member of Wise Baptist Church, a member of Suthers Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 259, Norton, and a member of the Wise Lions Club.
Mr. Combs was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Horne Combs; two sons, Charles Edd Combs of the home, and Giles "Smokey" Combs III, Madison, W.Va.; a sister, Margaret Blanche Combs, Wise; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

ABINGDON -- Vernon Edwards, 88, of 18088 Black Hollow Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Dickenson County, a retired coal miner and a member of the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Counts Edwards; a son, Roger Edwards, Laurel, Md., two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a native of Mitchell County, N.C., had lived in
Johnson City most of her life and was a homemaker.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of United Methodist Women. She was the widow of James Franklin Good.
Survivors include a son, James F. Good Jr.,
Johnson City; a daughter, Mrs. Rudolph Brinkley, Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Madeline Whitson, Florida, and Laura Buchanan, South Carolina; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

SALTVILLE -- Mrs. Gladys Elizabeth Grogg, 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
She was the widow of Clarence W. Grogg and attended Midway Memorial Chapel Church.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Grogg and William E. Grogg, both of Saltville; two daughters, Anita Johnson, Sarasota, Fla., and Patricia Stiltner, Mountain Home, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

CLINCHCO -- Bill Harrison, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Dickenson County Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
He was a member of Clintwood Masonic Lodge No. 66, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of UMWA Local No. 7170.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Harrison; two sons, Donnie Harrison and Dennis Harrison, both of Clinchco; a sister, Pearl Raines, Clinchco; a brother, Johnny Harrison, Bristol Virginia; a granddaughter; two step-grandsons; and a great-grandson.
