Johnson CITY -- Hazel T. May Rainey, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Cambridge House, Bristol Tennessee.
She was a native of Elizabethton and had lived most of her life in the
Johnson City area. She was a homemaker and a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church,
Johnson City.
Survivors include a son, Gordon Steven Rainey, Bristol Tennessee; a brother, Herman May, Florida; a granddaughter, Kellie Danielle Rainey, Bristol Tennessee; four grandsons, John Orr, Michael Orr, Randy Orr and Mark Orr, all of Spartanburg, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Cleva Leonard Smiley, 81, of Bristol Virginia, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a retired employee from Big Ben and a member of the Beech Grove United Methodist Church.
She was the widow of James E. Smiley.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Jean Smiley, Mars, Pa.; two sons, James Kenneth Smiley, Bristol Virginia, and Joseph Wayne Smiley, Kingsport; a sister, Lucille Warren, Bristol Virginia; three brothers, Conley Leonard, Huntsville, Ala., Ray Leonard, Denver, Colo., and Don Leonard, Salisbury, N.C.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ernest C. Snow Jr.
Ernest Cecil Snow Jr., 70, of 19605 Greenbrier Drive, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Logan County, W.Va., had lived in Bristol Virginia for the past eight years and was retired from Powelton Coal Company, Mallory, W.Va.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving with the 5th Air Force, 8th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group. He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife, Iola M. Snow, Bristol Virginia; a stepson, James K. Gillespie, Kingsport; three sisters, Anna Mae Wilds, West Palm Beach, Fla., Daisy Baisden, Crown, W.Va., and Geraldine Dyson, Blowing Rock, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Earl C. Stuart
Earl C. Stuart, 64, of 104 Ridgedale Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998.
He was a native of Washington County, Va., a retired road salesman for Mitchell Powers Hardware Company and a charter member of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, youth worker and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annis Vance Stuart; three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Gail) Hollon, Abingdon, Mrs. John (Debbie) Durham, Bristol Virginia, and Mrs. Becky Riley, Bristol Tennessee; a son, Kelsey Stuart, Lebanon, Tenn.; three sisters, Jamie Burnett, Bristol Virginia, Frances "Tootsie" Black, Palmyra, Tenn., and Mrs. Sam (Shirley) Jackson, Kewanee, Ill.; a brother, Wilbur Stewart, Bristol Tennessee; and six grandchildren.

MORRISTOWN -- Josephine S. Wolford, 84, of Heritage Center, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Paul Wolford, White Pine; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Camilla) Musick, Shady Springs, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, John Paul Burton, Lewis Burton, Maria Wolford, Jane Buhl, Lisa Meidl, Joseph Musick and Matthew Musick; and six great-grandchildren.

Ruby C. Absher
NORTON -- Ruby Collier Absher, 98, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap.
She was a member of the First Church of God, Norton, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for over 57 years. She was past president of the Norton Literary Club, past president of the Wise County Democratic Women, a former member of the Norton Garden Club and a former member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Survivors include two sons, Charles A. "Bud" Absher Jr., Big Stone Gap, and Creed C. Absher, Norton; a daughter, Ella C. Cox,
Johnson City; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three nieces; and a nephew.

Harry M. Barker
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Harry McNeil Barker, 75, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in Jacksonville.
He was a native of Dante, Va., a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired as chief hospital corpsman. He was a member of VFW Post 7909, and the American Legion Post 137.
He was founding member of St. Albans Episcopal Church, now Church of the Nativity.
Survivors include two sons, James M. Barker, Seminole, Fla., and John E. Barker, St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister, Lydia Rae Coiner, Arlington, Va.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Saturday in Florida. Town & Country Funeral Home, Jacksonville, is in charge.
Wallace Blankenship
AUGUSTA, W.Va. -- Wallace Mathias Blankenship, 82, formerly of Mavisdale, Va., died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Jolo, W.Va., had resided in Augusta for the past three years, moving there from Mavisdale.
He was a former coal miner employed with Jewell Valley and Clinchfield Coal Corporation and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Mr. Blankenship was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Hagerman Blankenship.
Survivors include three daughters, Marie Grindler, Helen Phelps and Mildred Friedrichs, all of Elkton, Md.; a son, Wilson Blankenship, Augusta; two sisters, Linda Blankenship, Tazewell, and Martha De Turk, Rochester, Ind.; a brother, Ervin Blankenship, Augusta;. 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

BLOUNTVILLE -- Etta M. Blair Goodman, 86, of 206 Oakwood Road, formerly of Lime Hill Road, Bristol Virginia, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Walnut Cove Health Care Center, Walnut Cove, N.C.
She had lived most of her life in the Bristol area and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Benhams Baptist Church and the widow of James E. Goodman Sr.
Survivors include four daughters, Eugenia Ruth Booher, Blountville, Juanita Sue Greer, Bristol Virginia, Lois Bernice Cook, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Linda Mae Jacobs, Bluff City; a son, James E. Goodman Jr., Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Ella Mae Blair, Bristol Virginia, and Alice Howard, Bristol Tennessee; 13 grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Anna B. Jones, 60, of 1247 Virginia Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
She was a native of Bluff City, a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Bristol Tennessee, and the widow of Alvin B. Jones.
Survivors include a son John Jones, Bluff City; his stepmother, Ruby Kaylor, Bluff City; and several nieces and nephews.
