Stephen K. Roberts
ROANOKE -- Stephen Kenneth Roberts, 47, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998.
He retired as a chief warrant officer with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge No. 324, the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Kazim Temple.
Mr. Roberts was formerly a Federal Aviation Administration pilot examiner and an accident prevention counselor. He was a lighter-than-air, free balloon pilot (hot air balloon).
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca D. Roberts; a son, Jason C. Roberts, Roanoke; his mother, Bess Roberts, Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. John (Sue) Wolfe, Roanoke, and Mrs. Tim (Mary) Mize, Raleigh, N.C.; several nieces and nephews, two great-nephews; and a great-niece.

Elsie B. Statzer
Elsie Pearl Barker Statzer, 90, of Leisure Park Towers, Bristol, Va., died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Washington County, Va., had assisted her husband while he pastored churches in Colorado, California, Arizona and Kansas, and returned to Bristol 15 years ago.
She was a member of Fellowship Chapel.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Isaac M. Statzer; three daughters, Jean Dye, Columbus, Ohio, Barbara Graham, Florence, Colo., and Mary J. Jones, Emory, Texas; three sons, Johnathan E. Statzer, Bristol Virginia, the Rev. James T. "Jim" Statzer, Meadowview, and Paul M. Statzer, Phoenix, Ariz.; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

N. Kelly Vaughan
N. Kelly Vaughan, 86, of 1152 Pemberton Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Nashville and had lived in Bristol for the past 60 years. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and an Eagle Scout in a Nashville troop.
He was a member of the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder and trustee, and was a retired engineer.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Pemberton Vaughan; a daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Mary Sue) Leeton, Knoxville; two sons, Thomas P. Vaughan, Bristol Tennessee, and Robert K. Vaughan, Birmingham, Ala.; and 8 grandchildren.

Sadie L. Brown
JEWELL RIDGE, Va. -- Sadie L. Brown, 83, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Buchanan County, a lifelong resident of the Jewell Ridge area and a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was the widow of Joe D. Brown.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Shelby) Maxwell, Whitewood, Va., and Mrs. Alfred (Betty) Whited, Richlands; a son, John "Jack" Brown, Morrow, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Lucy Evans, Kissimmee, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Arthur Cantrell
POUND -- Arthur Cantrell, 78, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, and attended Lone Pine Chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Baker Cantrell; two sons, Greg Cantrell and Chris Cantrell, both of Big Stone Gap; a sister, Mary Cantrell Stevens, Richmond; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert W. Grosjean
Robert Wayne Grosjean, 47, of 23418 High Point Road, Bristol, Va., died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, from injuries sustained in a construction accident.
He was a native of Port Clinton, Ohio, a U.S. Army veteran and an employee of
Jones Brothers Construction Company.
Survivors include his wife, Sheryl Russell Grosjean; two daughters, Stephanie Marie Grosjean of the home, and Patches Clinkhimer, Ohio; three sisters, Judy Hensley and Sharon Russell, both of Bristol Virginia, and Darlene Rhodes, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Rollin Grosjean, Oak Harbor, Ohio; and a grandson.

Della M. Hartsock
MARTINSVILLE -- Della Mae Grigsby Hartsock, 94, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in Martinsville Health and Rehabilitation Center, Martinsville.
She was a native of Scott County, of the Baptist faith and the widow of Claude F. Hartsock Sr.
Survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. Junior (Maudie) Vaughn and Ms. Judy Hartsock, both of Kingsport, Mrs. Emory (Shirley) Price and Mrs. Leonard (Linda) Hall, both of Bassett, Va., Mrs. Bernard (Pauline) Lewis, Nickelsville, Mrs. Charles (Phyllis) Harter, Martinsville, and Mrs. John (Patricia) Clark, Mt. Carmel, Tenn.; five sons, James R. Hartsock and Claude F. Hartsock Jr., both of Kingsport, Ray Hartsock, Blountville, Guy Hartsock, Bassett, and Fred Hartsock, Surgoinsville; a half-brother, Joe Bill Grigsby, Marion, N.C.; two half-sisters, Bertha Redman, Piney Flats, and Judy Mace, Morganton, N.C.; 32 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth K. Marshall
Elizabeth Knight Marshall, 77, of 130 Tyler Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in NHC Health Care of Bristol.
She was a native of Washington County, Tenn., and a member of Central Presbyterian Church.
She received a bachelor's degree in music from East Tennessee State University and a master's degree from Vanderbilt University.
Mrs. Marshall had a long career as Director of Music in Bristol Tennessee elementary schools. Prior to her work in Bristol schools, she was the band and choral director in Morristown city schools. She was also a church organist.
She was active in various organizations where she held leadership roles, including Bristol Music Club, Bristol Genealogy Association, the Sullivan County Genealogy Society, Bristol Retired Teachers Association, Bristol University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Friendship Dance Club and Around Town Dance Club.
Survivors include her husband, Walter C. Marshall; a brother, Richard F. Knight, Jonesborough; and several nieces and nephews.

David W. Norton
David Wesley Norton, 40, of Bristol Virginia, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Bristol Tennessee and had lived most of his life in this area. He was employed with Tri-City Opticians for 20 years, retiring in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Wesley Allen Norton, Bristol Tennessee; his parents, Charles and Betty Campbell Norton, Bristol Tennessee; a sister, Betsy Norton Rose, Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, Charlie Norton and Tim Norton, both of Bristol Tennessee; his maternal grandmother, Lucy Campbell, Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

LEBANON -- Clara Ball Ray, 78, of Cross Roads Community, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Buchanan County and had lived in Russell County most of her life. She was the widow of Alvie Ray and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Audrey Ray, Cleveland, Va.; four sons, Iven Ray, Wise, Otis Ray, Lebanon, Kyle Ray, Bristol Tennessee, and Gary Winfred Ray, Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Cora Ray, Davenport, Va., Jerlene Bowman, Horse Pin, Va., and Iolet Arrington, Lebanon; two brothers, Henderson Ball, Warsaw, Va., and Floyd Ball,
Johnson City; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
