ABINGDON -- The Rev. John Franklin Greer Jr., 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Dungannon and a graduate of Emory & Henry College and Candler School of Theology.
He was a former teacher and coach and served for 44 years as a minister in numerous churches in the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church.
He was a former president of the Abingdon Civitan Club and Emory & Henry Gold Club.
Survivors include his wife, Madge Candler Greer; one son, John F. Greer III, Abingdon; one daughter, Suzanne Greer Lay, Abingdon; and three grandchildren, Sarah Lay Sapeta, David M. Lay and Megan C. Greer.

Margie S. Hicks
BLUFF CITY -- Mrs. Margie S. Hicks, 79, of 501 Weaver Branch Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in North Side Hospital,
Johnson City.
She was a native of Texas and had lived in Bluff City for 47 years.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Hicks; one daughter, Stella Salters, Arizona; and one brother, George Dalton, Texas.

M.M. Hidalgo-Gato
MARION -- Mercedes Miyares Hidalgo-Gato, 89, of Panarama Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at her home.
Survivors include two daughters, Mercedes Blattner, Marion, and Elana Diaz, Chicago; one grandson, Alexander Blattner, Marion; one great-grandson, Christopher Blattner; and one step-grandson.

Jim N. Humphreys
WISE -- Jim N. Humphreys died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Eisenhower Memorial Hospital, Rancho Mirage, Calif.
He was a native of Lee County, had lived in the Norton-Wise area since 1966, and was a graduate of Jonesville High School, Emory & Henry College and the University of Virginia.
In the 1960s, he was employed as an administrator with the Russell County School System where he coached football and basketball at Lebanon High School.
He held several positions with Clinch Valley College, including Dean of Students and head basketball coach. Most recently, he was vice-president of Humphreys Enterprises, Inc., and related companies.
He was a member of Norton United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.
His abilities as a basketball player earned him a place in the Emory & Henry College Sports Hall of Fame.
He served on the Board of Directors for Miners Exchange Bank, was a former member of the Board of Directors for the American Mining Congress and was a member of several civic organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Mise Humphreys; one son, James N.L. Humphreys, Kingsport; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Minor, Jonesville, Va., and Mrs. Vivian H. Todd, Kingsport; one brother, Bill G. Humphreys,
Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

Virgil L. Klaiber
COEBURN -- Virgil Leo Klaiber, 62, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at his home.
He was a former resident of Marion, Ohio, had lived in Coeburn for over 20 years, and was a former employee of Pollock Steel Company.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Community Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Maude B. Klaiber; one son, Michael Klaiber, Coeburn; one daughter, Shauna Klaiber, Coeburn; three brothers, Eugene Klaiber, Richwood, Ohio, Russell Klaiber, Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and Chuck Klaiber, Caledonia, Ohio; four sisters, Faye Smith, Ft. Myers, Fla., Linda Williams, Sycamore, Ohio, Margaret
Williams and Donna Smith, both of Tiffin, Ohio; one grandson; one step-grandson; one step-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Hazel T. Larimer
ERWIN -- Hazel T. Larimer, 73, of Erwin Health Care Center, 100 Stalling Lane, formerly of 804 Dogwood Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in Erwin Health Care Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Erwin, was employed with Southern Pottery for 15 years as a designer//painter, and was employed as a cashier with United Telephone Company, retiring after 26 years of service.
She was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Duncan and Gene Duncan, Erwin; one sister-in-law, Chestine Larimer, Erwin; one nephew, Craig P. Larimer; one niece, Mary Elizabeth Duncan Jones; one great-nephew, Patrick N. Larimer; and several cousins.

Richard V. Nutter
SALTVILLE -- Richard Van Nutter, 67, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his home.
He was a former Olin employee and a retired employee of Westinghouse Corporation.
He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Bristol, Tennessee. He was a deacon in the church for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Zelda Routh Nutter; three sons, Richard W. "Dicky" Nutter, Blountville, Ricky Nutter, Saltville and Mickey Nutter, Bristol, Virginia; his mother, Mary Exie Nutter, Glade Spring; two brothers, Malcolm Nutter, Cleveland, Tenn., and Harold "Jim" Nutter, Woodlawn, Va.; two sisters, Janet DeBord, Abingdon, and Mary McFarlane, Meadowview; three daughters-in-law; his mother-in-law; six grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and several aunts, nieces and nephews.

Donnie Owens
VANSANT -- Donnie Owens, 60, of Webb Branch section, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital.
He was a native of Dickenson County, had lived in Buchanan County for several years, and attended the Primitive Baptist church.
He was a disabled coal miner and a member of United Mine Workers of America.
Survivors include his former wife, Gretta Johnson, Council; two sons, Michael Donnie Owens and Christopher Aaron Owens, both of Council; one sister, Nellie Pruner, Haysi, four brothers, Otis Owens, Big Rock, Gordon Owens, Doran, Otto Owens, Oakwood, and Trinkle Deel, Rosedale; and one grandson.

Cora B. Presley
OAKWOOD, Va. -- Mrs. Cora Belle Presley, 99, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in Rileyville, Va.
She was a native of Council, Va. and was a graduate of Radford College.
She taught 34 years in Buchanan County public schools and was a member of Oakwood Presbyterian Church.
She was the widow of Norman Presley.
Survivors include two sons, Masel Presley, Oakwood, and Henry Presley, Burke, Va.; four daughters, Mrs. Charline McClary, Ft. Pierce, Fla., Mrs. Pauline Davis, Rileyville, Mrs. Maxine Mark, Antioch, Ill., and Ms. Sue Presley, Falls Church; one sister, Mrs. Carmie Davis, Salem, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
