Served in the R.A.F. during World War II and survived four years as a Japanese Prisoner of War, before becoming a Director at Wormald's and Walker's Mill, Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury and later Landlord of the Old Three Tuns in Thirsk. Worked with Clare for many years as a volunteer in successfully creating specialist provision for Autism and supporting people with learning disabilities within Thirsk and across Yorkshire.
