Smith

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 30, 2004 for James Donald 'Doc' Smith, 80, of Liberty, at the First United Methodist Church in Liberty. Burial followed in Oak Shade Baptist Church in Tarkington Prairie.
He was known throughout the region as 'Doc' and was born November 6, 1923, to James Wyatt Smith and Ida Elaine Donaho. The youngest of 10 brothers and sisters, Doc spent his early years with his family at their homestead in Hightower, Texas.
After graduating from Tarkington Independent School, among a class of only six students, Doc joined the United States Navy. In the SEABEES unit, he served his country from Alaska to the Pacific in World War II.
After retiring from the war, Doc married his sweetheart, Norma Finley, on February 24, 1946. Both were baptized at Oak Shade Baptist Church soon afterwards. Doc then attended Sam Houston State University, then University of Texas Dental School, graduating with honors. He opened his private dental practice first in Cleveland, then Anahuac, and finally settled in Liberty in 1958. He and his family joined the First Methodist Church in Liberty, where they were active members for decades.
He spent his years in private practice in Liberty where he and his wife raised their three sons, Jimmy, Mike and Randy. He was then called to teach at the University of Texas Dental College where he served as a beloved professor for 18 years, retiring at the age of 62. The Texas Dental Association awarded Doc the "50-Year-Award' in May of 2002.
After his retirement, Doc was still active in various land development projects including the Red Arrow Campground, which was later re-named Chain-O-Lakes Resort and several other locations in Texas and New Mexico.
Known for his quick wit and beaming smile, Doc never met a stranger. He was a dedicated family man, married to his beloved wife for over 58 years. According to the family, their relationship was a sincere inspiration to anyone who knew them. He served as a true patriarch to his sons and their children. A man of dignity, grace, empathy and morality, he was genuinely revered in the community. A life-long student of insatiable curiosity. Doc enjoyed a variety of interests including philosophy, the sciences and the arts. He was as likely to talk about recent findings regarding black holes in space, or corporate ethics, or the ancient Anasazi civilization. His very special connection with children and animals was legendary.
Smith died on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at his home.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Norma Finley Smith; his three sons, Jimmy, Mike and Randy; four grandchildren, Stacy Kristen, James Wyatt, Kristen and Michael Donald; sister, Pauline Lewis and her children, Melvin Hunt and Peggy Robinson; and numerous friends and extended family members.
Stowe

Funeral services for Floyd Lee Stowe, 90, were held Monday, March 29, 2004, at the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Frank Hood and Bobby Crawford officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Hill Cemetery in Segno. military honors were provided by the VFW Post 8568 Honor Guard.
He was born July 15, 1913 in New Caney, the son of Perry and Minnie Lee Poor Stowe. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, having attained the rank of Tec 5. He enlisted on April 26, 1945 in Houston and was discharged on November 5, 1946 at Fort Sam Houston.
Mr. Stowe died Friday, March 26, in Memorial health System of East Texas in Livingston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; his father, Perry Stowe; mother, Minnie Lee Poor Stowe; father, Bill Platt; brothers, J.W. Platt, Elmer Platt, Oscar Platt, Coot Platt and Arthur Platt; and sisters, Frances Hopkins and Pauline Murphy.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Elsie and Larry Fleetwood of Livingston, Imogene and Neal Klawinsky of Willis and Polly and Pete Stanford of Cleveland; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Morris and Jean Platt of Livingston; brother, Curtis Platt of Livingston; brothers-in-law and wives, Floyd and Ruth Cain of Segno, Earl and Faye Cain of Livingston, Leamon Roy and Shirley Cain of Segno, Donald and Sue Cain of Segno, Frank and Betty Bullock of Livingston, Billy and Diane Cain of Hearne, Bobby Joe Caine of Hearne and Charles Ray Cain of Segno; and sister-in-law, Hazel Thomas of Houston.
Pallbearers were Larry Fleetwood Jr., Timothy Fleetwood Sr., Jeff Allen Mitchell, Paul Cain, James Stanford, Kevin Stanford and Don Bullock.

Quinn

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004 for Eugene 'Gene' Quinn, 55, of Cleveland, at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Interment followed at Linney Cemetery in Dayton.
He was born on January 10, 1948 in Bald Knob, Arkansas, the son of Willie Alvin Quinn and Sinnie Agnes Finch. He had been a trucker all of his life before settling down in Cleveland for the last four years.
Quinn was a very spontaneous person who loved to hit the road with his family and go wherever the road took them. He loved Disney World and visited often. He liked to go to the casino and play nickel slots with his wife. He loved his grandchildren and always enjoyed spending time with them. He was always busy and enjoyed working around the house. According to his family, he had an unusual but terrific sense of humor and loved to tell bad jokes and watch bad movies.
Mr. Quinn died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Earnestine 'Ernie' Rhodes Quinn of Cleveland; daughters, Misty Leigh Holland and husband, Cevin, of Kountze, Brandy Lynn Addington and husband, Glen, of Dayton, Lillian Michelle Snyder and husband, Jared, of Richwood; sisters, Rosie Arnell Quinn of Bald Knob, Arkansas, Mary Lee Linderman of Paragould, Arkansas, Emma Lee Cook of Leesville and Geraldine Vaughn of Judsinia, Arkansas; brothers, Alfred Quinn and Melvin Quinn, both of Bald Knob, Arkansas, Clinton Quinn of Evening Shades, Arkansas, Leo Quinn of Bangor, Maine, and James Quinn of Lake Whales, Florida; grandchildren, Blake and Dakota Holland, Bri and Kendal Addington of Dayton, T.J. and Rebecca of Richwood; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Costlow

Graveside services were held Friday, April 2, 2004, at Ryan Chapel Cemetery in Diboll for Melvin Orvis Costlow.
He was born October 23, 1920 in Murchison. Mr. Costlow served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 during World War II, fighting for the country in the Marshall Islands.
He died March 29, 2004 in Dallas. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; and his wife, Edna Holcomb Costlow.
Survivors include his daughter, Nikki McCurdy and husband, William; grandson, Scott and wife, Carolyn and children, Scott and Tara; grandson, Timothy and wife, Regina, and children, Kallie and Will; step-daughter, Earline Smith and husband, Glen Smith and their children, Becky, Robby, David and Kevin; sister-in-law, Louise Crawford and husband, Randy Crawford and their children, Michael, Donald, Nancy and Barbara; brother-in-law, Charles Holcomb and wife, Sarah, and their children, Judy, Charlene, Louise and Richard; niece, Josephine 'Jodi' Waltman and many, many friends at the Preston AA Chapter.

Edmonds

Funeral services for Lee C. Edmonds, 84, of Liberty, were conducted Friday, April 2, 2004, in Allison Funeral Service Chapel, with the Revs. Jimmie Clemmons and J.O. Hendricks officiating. Interment followed at Fairlawn Cemetery in Liberty.
Edmonds was born September 17, 1919 to Connie Brice and Cora Walston Edmonds in Cameron, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. He retired as the postal officer of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Edmonds was a Baptist and a former member of American Legion Post 313 at Fort Belvoir. He thoroughly enjoyed retired life with his wife, Ruth, of 28 years and their large family and friends in Liberty.
Edmond's hobbies included gardening, making specialty hot sauces from his garden, hunting, fishing, barbecuing -- as all Texans do -- collecting memorabilia and spending time with loved ones.
During his teen years in Liberty, he joined Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) where he served in Globe, Arizona, and later in Woodville, Texas. He fought forest fires and built hiking trails and rest areas while serving with CCC.
Mr. Edmonds was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alvin Edmonds, Fran Edmonds, Elton Carl Edmonds and Roy Lee Edmonds; granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Allen; and long time best friend, Robert L. Haas.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Edmonds of Liberty; son, David O. Edmonds and wife, Maria, of Liberty; daughter, Janyce Lee Lee and husband, Michael, of Livingston; brothers, Earnest Edmonds and wife, Maxine, of Dayton, and Clarence Edmonds of Liberty; sisters, Lucille Fregia of Fregia of Moss Hill and Opal Lee of Liberty; 10 grandchildren, Steven Lucas and wife, Patty, Darren Lucas and friend, Shelly, Ricky Lucas and wife, Shyanne, Ginger Hendricks and husband, Olyn, Brian Edmonds and wife, Angela, Davie Lee Edmonds, Lisa Ames and husband, Greg, Angel Renee Edmonds, Jennifer Lee and Valerie Berry and husband, Vance; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Jemison

Funeral services for Lee Jemison, 69, were held Saturday, April 1, 2004, at the First Assembly of God Church in Onalaska, with the Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska.
He was born January 25, 1935 in Summitt, New Jersey, the son of LeRoy E. and Leonie T. Perrot Jemison, both of whom preceded him in death.
Mr. Jemison died Wednesday, March 31, in Livingston.
Survivors include his sons, Chris Jemison of Starksboro, Vermont, Todd Jemison of Swanton, Vermont, Timmy Jemison of Forked River, New Jersey, Wes Maat of Westfield, New Jersey and Owen Maat of Monroe, Louisiana; daughters, Liza Jemison of Houston and Wendy Hernandez of Irving; brothers, Roy Jemison of Acton, Massachusetts and Bill Jemison of Ocracoke, North Carolina; sister, Helen Springob of Leonia, New Jersey; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Sanders

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 1, 2004 for Weldon Arthur Sanders Sr., 95, of Hull, at First United Methodist Church in Daisetta with the Revs. Gene Lovering and Gideon Watson officiating. Interment followed at Guedry Cemetery in Batson.
A native of Pine Hill, Texas, he had lived in Hull for 58 years. He married Edna Lee Wilson on October 3, 1942, in Paris, Texas. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II with the 42nd Rainbow Division in Europe. he was a retired television technician. He was also an active member of First United Methodist Church in Daisetta, and a former member of the Rotary Club of Hull. He enjoyed camping and gardening.
Mr. Sanders died March 30 in Liberty. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Gilbert and Soleta Cole Sanders; daughter, Diane Casal; sisters, Pauline Burch and Marie Beck; and granddaughter, Kammy Beard.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Lee Sanders of hull; sons, Weldon A. Sanders Jr. of Seagoville, Texas, Frank Gilbert Sanders and wife, Cindy, of Irving; daughter, Weldeen Tolliver of Pittsburg, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Adair

Graveside services for Ellen Joyce Adair, 72, of Rye, were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2004, with the Rev. Carl Wheeler officiating.
She was born in Pasadena, Texas, the daughter of Roy Ernest Jackson and Lela Ellen Wheeler Jackson on August 3, 1932. She graduated from Pasadena High School in 1977. She was a foster parent to many children and at one time had the state's largest foster home located in Texas City. Adair was a loving role model and parent to all who came through her home.
Survivors include her daughter, Lela Ellen Adair, of Rye; son, Wesley Jordan; ad a friend, Dot Foster of Rye.
Gautreaux

Funeral services were held Friday, September 17, 2004 for Berne Gautreaux, 46, of Batson. Interment followed at Guedry Cemetery in Batson.
A native of Houston, he had lived in the Batson area for 27 years and was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Mr. Gautreaux died Wednesday, September 15, at his home in Batson. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Gautreaux.

Mills

Graveside services for Robert Wesley Mills, 66, were held Thursday, September 16, 2004, in Peebles Cemetery, Livingston.
He was born October 3, 1937 in Livingston, the son of Addie Rankin and Robert H. Mills, both of whom preceded him in death. He was an only child. Mr. Mills was a life-long resident of Polk County and a heavy equipment operator. He made many of the roads in Canyon Park and Kickapoo Forest in Onalaska. He was an active member of Winnie Street Baptist Church in Livingston until failing health forced his retirement. He married Ellen Murphy Johnson on October 16, 1959. The marriage ended in divorce after 19 years.
Mr. Mills died Saturday, September 4, 2004, in Village Health Care Center, Houston.
Survivors include his children, Susan Debra Mills of Dayton, Rebecca Sue Mills of Livingston and Kathy Mills Brown and husband, Kenny, of Livingston and Leslie Mills of Abilene.

Parker

Funeral services were held Friday, September 17, at Pace Funeral Home Chapel for Priscilla M. Parker, 85, of Huffman, with the Rev. Barry Jeffries officiating. Interment followed in Peebles Cemetery.
She was born May 26, 1919 in Colgate, Ohio, the daughter of Walter and Winnie Ferguson Gaskey. She married Floyd Parker on February 19, 1937 in Woodville. He preceded her in death in November 1985. She had been a Houston area resident since 1941, moving from Polk County.
Mrs. Parker died Wednesday, September 15, 2004, in Houston. In addition to her parents and husband; two sisters, Gracie Connor and Lula Mae Shotwell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her three children, Floydene R. Jackson of Huffman, Jack T. Parker and wife, Nancy, of Lake Jackson and Juanita L. Graham and husband, Leonard, of Houston; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
