Brown
Doris VanCleave Sowell Brown, 64, of Three Rivers died Tuesday, July 27, 2004.
Visitation was held Wednesday, July 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Galloway and Sons Chapel in Three Rivers. The funeral was held on Thursday at 2 p.m. Burial followed at the Three Rivers Cemetery.
Mrs. Brown was born on May 20, 1940, to Douglas Faye and Frankie Mae (Stewart) VanCleave in Three Rivers. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas Faye and Frankie Mae (Stewart) VanCleave; two brothers, Charles VanCleave and Dennis VanCleave; and one daughter, Brenda Sowell.
Survivors include two sons, Doug (Tina) Sowell of Katy and Rick Sowell of Bandera; two daughters, Laurie Sowell of Giddings and Michelle (Travis) Sowell Preston of Groesbeck; one sister, Lois (Joe) Vinning of Oak Grove, La.; one brother WR “Jack” (Beverly) VanCleave of Flour Bluff; seven grandchildren, Koery Green, Colton and Cameron Holloway of Giddings, Forrest Sowell of East Bernard, Codi Sowell of Groesbeck and Aaron and Tristin Sowell of Katy; and one great-grandchild, Kade Green of Giddings.
Chapa
Lena (Chapa) Garcia, 92, died Thursday, July 29, 2004.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Anna Rose on June 1, 1912, to Romano and Regina “Pinky” (Weston) Chapa. She was a lifelong resident of George West. She and her husband, Ramiro Garcia Sr., owned and operated the T&T Café in George West for many years. Mrs. Garcia was an active member of the George West American GI Forum Ladies Auxiliary during the 1950s. Her efforts toward various projects greatly benefited the community. As a descendant of the Weston and Chapa families, alongside her family, she contributed to the success of the Chapa Dance Hall (La Posta), one of the first and most popular dance halls in South Texas.
Mrs. Garcia was foremost a loving, nurturing mother who found great joy in her family. Kind, generous and unselfish, she had a love for all things good and beautiful. She always had a true appreciation for joyful living, which was reflected by her vibrant love for music and dancing. The wonderful memories she leaves her family will forever bring happiness and smiles.
Survivors include two daughters, Narcie (Gene) Secrist of Cedar City, Utah, and Mackey (Chon) Alvarez of George West; a son, Ramiro Jr. (Mary) Garcia of Kirby; three stepchildren, Raul (Ine) Garcia, Griselda Valverde and Edebelia Garza, all of Three Rivers; two sisters, Emilia (Chapa) Franco of Corpus Christi and Otila (Chapa) Martinez of Defiance, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Francisco, Gilberto, Guillermo and Ernesto Chapa; two sisters, Leonor Chapa and Olivia Mandel; and three stepchildren.
A rosary was held Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Galloway & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in George West.
Church services were held Monday, Aug. 2, at St. George Catholic Church in George West with interment following at the George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chon Alvarez, Randy Garcia, Ruben Alvear, Shawn Ray Alvarez, Jason Alvarez, Josh Likens, Lloyd Wientjes and Bobby Cuevas.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Live Oak County Boys & Girls Club.

Anderson
Pauline Anderson, 85, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, following a long illness. She was born Feb. 16, 1918, in Fort Worth. She lived in Three Rivers for 17 years.
Survivors include a son, Charles (Barbara) Roberson of Alice; a daughter, Betty (Ronald) Mankel of Hurst; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held at noon on Monday, Nov. 24, at the Bluebonnet Hill Cemetery in Colleyville.
Arrangements were under the direction of Forrest Ridge Funeral Home, Hurst.
Ginn
Murel Cook Ginn, 93, of George West died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003. She was born Dec. 9, 1909, in Abilene to Jesse and Mable (Walling) Cook.
Mrs. Ginn married Ray Ginn in Plano on June 30, 1924. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church, George West.
Mrs. Ginn was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Ginn; her parents; and a son, John Ginn.
Survivors include two daughters, Margie Kendall and Mildred James, both of George West; a son, Ray Ginn Jr. of Beeville; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Friday at the Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West.
The funeral was held Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in George West with the Rev. Bruce Irving officiating. Burial followed in the George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ellis Nubbin Ginn, Rodney Ginn, Billy Burris, Mark Ginn, John Ginn Jr. and Will Kendall.

Landis
Robert Daniel Landis, 83, died Monday, Nov. 24. He was born May 5, 1920 in Arnold, Pa., to Emma Frances and Daniel Rufus Landis.
He graduated from Arnold High School and retired as store manager for Wilson Supply in Alice.
Mr. Landis was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy E. Landis, and his parents.
Survivors include Sheila K. and John Ayers of Howe, Kathy Lunaas and husband of Corpus Christi, Carol and Rusty Merritt of Palestine, Susie and Ernie Whitson of Three Rivers and Mike and Rusty Burchett of El Campo; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Lynn Koessler of Oakmont, Pa.; a brother, Jack (Nita) Landis of Lower Burrell, Pa.; and one niece and two nephews.
The funeral was held Friday at the Roberson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at the Alice Cemetery.

Summerville
Schelly Wayne Summerville, 53, of Joshua, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at a Granbury hospital. He was born Feb. 7, 1950, in Lampasas to R.D. and R.V. (Hodge) Hester. Mr. Summerville was a heavy equipment operator.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Danny Summerville; and a daughter, Gloria Hoiyt.
Survivors include his wife, Debora Summerville of Joshua; two sons, Nathan Summerville of Orlando, Fla., and Ryan Summerville of Joshua; a daughter, Elizabeth Summerville of Austin; a brother, Bobby Summerville (Alice Jackson) of Valley View; and three sisters, JoAnn (Jack) Davidson of Lampasas, Loretta Jean (Ruben) Crawford of Palestine and Nicky (Dan) Wilkinson of Denton.
A memorial service was held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Lampasas Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Mountain Valley Funeral Home, Burleson.
White
D.J. “Cuz” White, 66, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at his residence in the Simmons community.
He was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Three Rivers to Floyd and Monnie (Wood) White. He was an oilfield worker.
Mr. White was preceded in death by a brother, Charles White.
Survivors include two sons, Danny L. White of Seattle, Wash. and Jason White of Simmons; two daughters, Debbie Flournoy of Georgia and Barbara Ganter of Simmons; a brother, Paul White of Simmons; two sisters, Dorothy Fischer of St. David, Ariz., and Winnie Gorden of West Columbia; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Friday at the Galloway & Sons Chapel in Three Rivers.
The funeral was Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Simmons Community Church with the Rev. Ed Gentry officiating.
Burial followed in the Simmons Cemetery.
Pallbearers were C.W. “Bugs” Wood Jr., Kenny Powell, R.C. Bellows, Wade Wood, Robbie Conn and R.D. Bellows.
Montgomery
Dr. Robert “Bob” A. Montgomery, 74, of Wimberley, died in San Antonio on Saturday, July 16, 2005.
Dr. Montgomery was born and raised in Three Rivers where he became class valedictorian at Three Rivers High School in 1947.
He received his bachelors of arts degree from South-western University in Georgetown and continued his education, receiving his master’s and later his doctoral degree in educational psychology from The University of Texas at Austin.
Over the years, Dr. Bob served as junior high school teacher and assistant Deputy Commissioner of Education for the State of Texas, as well as superintendent of schools in Andrews, Education Service Center director in Abilene and Texas Education Agency assistant commissioner for Special Education in Austin.
After retiring from the state, he worked as a psychologist at the Austin State School, taught evening classes at Park College and was a psychology professor at St. Edward’s University in Austin. In all, Dr. Montgomerygave more than 52 years in direct service to education in the state of Texas.
He was instrumental in developing the Texas State Migrant Program at St. Edward’s University educating high school-aged children of migrant farm workers from throughout Texas. He held a lifetime membership in the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) and was honorary Gold Key Member of the Language Learning Disability Association, as well as a lifetime member of the University of Texas Ex-Student Association and Texas Democratic Party.
He and his family have presented 38 Jon Mark Montgomery Scholarships (awarded to Hays High School seniors in memory of his son) and more than seven Jack and Lillian Montgomery Scholarships (awarded to Three Rivers High School seniors in his parents’ honor).
Mr. Montgomery enjoyed helping his wife at area craft shows, spending summers in the mountains of Ruidoso, N.M., and taking annual trips to Las Vegas with his sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lillian Montgomery of Three Rivers; and youngest son, Jon Mark Montgomery.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Olna Montgomery of Wimberley; a daughter, Melayne Montgomery-Knezek of Austin; a son, Matthew Montgomery and his partner, Steve Merola, of San Antonio; a sister, Patsy Moyer; nephews, Monty Moyer and Dr. Steve Moyer of Oklahoma; and a “special brother,” Dr. Alejo Salinas Jr. of Hidalgo.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at Buda United Methodist Church in Buda. A remembrance reception will follow at the Montgomery home in Austin.

Dunn
Ruth E. (Miller) Dunn, 81, of Belton died Friday, July 15, 2005. Visitation was held Monday at the Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West. The funeral was held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in George West, with Pastor Bruce Irving officiating. Joe Dunn and A.J. Viertel provided music.
Burial followed at Beeville Memorial Park. Pallbearers were James and Lonnie Stewart, Gary Gillett, Joe Dunn, Bill Litle and Stewart Brinkoeter.
Mrs. Dunn was born May 22, 1924, to Sylvester William and Callie Blanche (Williams) Miller in San Patricio County. She married Warren A. “Gus” Dunn on March 24, 1948, in Beeville. She was a member of First Baptist Church in George West and was a rancher.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren A. “Gus” Dunn on May 21, 1980.
Survivors include her daughter, Janie Dunn (Larry) Smith of Conroe; a son, Dr. Warren (Susie) Dunn of Belton; five grandchildren, Jason Smith, Janette McDonald, Jana Smith, Cheryl Ragan and Matt Dunn; two great-grandchildren, Jamie and Jaden; and two sisters, Rose Brinkoeter of Sinton and Susie Riesinger of Woodville.

Stark
Thomas R. Stark, 53, a former Three Rivers resident, of Brazoria died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005. Mr. Stark was born to Fred Stark and Ruby (Samford) Payne on Oct. 7, 1951, in Kingsville. He was an independent truck driver for many years.
Survivors include his parents, Ruby and James Payne of Three Rivers; a son, Wesley Kolb of Antioch, Tenn.; four brothers, Fred Stark III of Ingleside, Earl Stark of West Columbia, James Stark of Tuleta and Roy Payne of Woodsboro; and four sisters, Karen Lois Brown of Austin, Nancy Coquat and Sharon Jones, both of Three Rivers, and Rita Trojcak of Refugio.
Visitation was held Friday, Sept. 9, at Roberson Funeral Home. A memorial service was held Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Three Rivers.
