Garza
Jesus Garza, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, following a long illness. Mr. Garza was born in George West. He retired from Harkins Company as a heavy equipment operator.
A prayer service was held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Templo El Sacrificio Church in Alice. The funeral was held Friday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the same location. Burial followed at the Collins Cemetery.
Mr. Garza was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, and a son, Abelardo Garza.
Survivors include five sons, Alejandro (Nellie) Garza and Jose Abel (Mary Jane) Garza, all of Alice, Enrique (Teru) Garza and Henry Garza, all of Pleasanton, and Jesus (Cheva) Garza Jr. of Dallas; three daughters, Gloria (Melvin) Schumacher and Elfida (David) Garcia, all of Alice, and Aurora “Gogie” (Robert) Garcia of Dallas; one brother, Victoriano Garza of Edinburg; five sisters, Eva Muñoz, Tila Cantu and Martha Lopez, all of Edinburg, Petra Garza of Alvin and Ciprana Negrite of Rosenburg; 28 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.

Hermes
Ida Marie Hermes, 91, of Pleasanton died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Pleasanton. She was born March 4, 1911, in Hickory, Okla., to B.O. and Olive Ann (Shaw) Edwards. Mrs. Hermes was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Hermes; and three sons, Clarence “Bud” Hermes, George Hermes and James Hermes.
Survivors include two sons, Henry H. (Jo) Hermes and F. Paul (Clara) Hermes of Pleasanton; a daughter, Jean Brown of Dilley; two daughters-in-law, Peggy (Hermes) Gilmore of George West and Edna Hermes of Henderson, Ky.; 28 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home in Cotulla.
A graveside service will be held Thursday (tomorrow) at 1 p.m. at the Dilley Cemetery with Pastor Evelyn Glazener-Cooney officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Peters Funeral Home, Cotulla.
Sliva
Boyce Sliva, 63, of Devine died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Edward Sliva Sr. (killed in World War II); his mother, Erna Sliva; and a brother, Eddie Edward Sliva Jr. (killed in the Korean War).
Survivors include his wife, Collie Sliva of Devine; sons, Dick (Twyla) McGee of San Antonio and Dwayne Eddie and April Sliva of Premont; a daughter, Shana Thompson of Devine; a brother, Royce Sliva of Three Rivers; a sister, Ernell Meyer of Three Rivers; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation was held Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Devine. The funeral was conducted Friday in the chapel of the Hurley Funeral Home with the Rev. Craig Sturm officiating.

Stewart
Sue Terry Stewart, 96, of George West died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Live Oak Nursing Center.
Visitation will be held tomorrow (Thursday) from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Galloway Funeral Home chapel in George West.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in George West, with the Rev. Mel Hazlewood officiating. Burial will follow at the George West Cemetery.
Mrs. Stewart was born on Nov. 28, 1905, to George W. and Martha (Terry) Terry in Odessa. She married Luther Hampton Stewart in Beeville on May 4, 1931. She was a retired bookkeeper at First National Bank in George West and was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Live Oak Study Club as well as several other Live Oak County organizations.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband on April 23, 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Margie Stewart George and husband Joe of Goliad; two sons, James Stewart and wife Elizabeth and Lonnie Stewart and wife Addie, all of George West; seven grandchildren, Susan Hilsman of Warrenton, Mo., Kay Merkel of Merrill, Wis., Stephen Stewart of George West, Melissa Hall of Beeville and Crystal, Kenneth and Kayla Stewart, all of George West; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Verastegui
Martina Verastegui, 95, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at her residence. She was born in Oakville on Oct. 22, 1906, to Santos and Catarina (Bustos) Nerios. She was a housewife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
Mrs. Verastegui was preceded in death by her husband; three sons; her parents; and one granddaughter.
Survivors include three daughters, Petra Verastegui and Florentina Moya of George West and Dominga V. Perez of Lamesa; one brother, Nicolas Nerios of Mathis; one sister, Guadalupe Chaves of Lamesa; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary was recited Friday at 8 p.m. at St. George Catholic Church in George West. Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. George.
Interment followed at the George West Cemetery.

Dickens
Elsie May (Ham) Dickens, 76, of Whitsett died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in Richmond.
Mrs. Dickens was preceded in death by her husband, James Willie Dickens.
Survivors include two sons, Mike (Kathy) Dickens of Wallace and Tony (Diane) Dickens of George West; a sister, Vera Jackson of Jourdanton; two brothers, Clarence Ham of San Saba and Lindy Ham of Alvin; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 2 to 8 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton. The funeral will be at Whitsett Baptist Church at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday). Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Whitsett.

Haverlah
Lee Henry Haverlah, 95, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in San Antonio. He was born in New Brehman to William and Ida (Baring) Haverlah on May 18, 1907. As a student, he exhibited his Jersey cattle at the Dallas State Fair and in later years raised registered Angus.
Mr. Haverlah married Anna Alma Matheaus at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Poth on Dec. 21, 1927. They made their home in the Three Oaks area. He was previously a resident of Live Oak Nursing Center in George West and Roma Memorial Nursing Home in Three Rivers before moving to Retama Manor North in Pleasanton. Mr. Haverlah was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jourdanton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, on Aug. 7, 1995; his parents; three brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include a daughter, Leanna (John) Koemel of George West; two sons, Dr. Gene (Toni) Haverlah of Del Rio and William (Peggy) Haverlah of Santa Rosa, N.M.; one sister, Ivy Lieke of Kenedy; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jourdanton on Friday with Pastor Dawn Silvius officiating. Interment followed in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Poth.
Services were under the direction of Tri-City Funeral Home, Thomas A. Lange, funeral director.
Krietsch
Roland Krietsch, 79, of George West died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at his residence. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Galloway & Sons Funeral chapel in George West. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the George West Cemetery, with the Rev. W.C. Ahlrich officiating.
Mr. Krietsch was born on April 11, 1923, to William and Henrietta (Hahn) Krietsch in Runge. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II. He was a retired rancher and butcher, having been employed at Canfield’s Grocery in George West. He was a member of the Lutheran church.
Survivors include three sisters, Elvira Scheel of Alice, Anita Hammock of Premont and Linda Crawford of Alice; one brother, Raymond “Button” Krietsch of Corpus Christi; eight nephews and one niece; and several great nieces and nephews.

Velma June (Anderson) Lewis, 67, a resident at Denham Springs, La., died on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Summit Hospital in Baton Rouge, La. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 93.
Visitation was held Saturday at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, followed by a service at 10 a.m. conducted by Brother Dennis Terry.
Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Gussettville.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her parents, Arma Robertson Kraintz and George Washington Anderson; her husband, James Hilton Lewis; and a son, James Charles Lewis.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan (Neil) Swilley; two sons, Wm. Robert (Madeline) Lewis and Patrick (Dodie Lynn) Lewis; and 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Lewis DiGiovanni, Jeannine June Lewis, Jeannee Anne Lewis, Justin Martin Lewis, Joshua Hugh Lewis, Jacob Michael Lewis, Ashley Nicole Swilley, Samantha Jo Swilley, Hilton Wise Lewis and Miranda Paige Lewis.

Estanislado “John” Saenz, 66, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002. Visitation was held Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home chapel in Beeville.
Prayer service was held that evening at 7 p.m. at the same location.
Graveside services were held today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at Beeville Memorial Park.
Mr. Saenz was born in Three Rivers on May 6, 1936, to Aniseto and San Juanita (Carreon) Saenz.
He married Dora Navarro on Sept. 6, 1955, in George West. He resided in Beeville and was a rancher.
He is survived by his wife, Dora Navarro Saenz of Beeville; two daughters, Maria Magdalena Peña of Italy, Texas, and Rose Marie Saenz of Beeville; two sons, Edward Saenz of George West and Henry Saenz of Odem; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Santos Saenz, Esperanza Dominguez, Delores Rodriguez and Mary Alice Dominguez, all of Three Rivers, Consuelo Amaya of Houston, Felipa Hernandez of San Antonio and San Juana Aguilar of Florida; and five brothers, Fidencio and Jose Saenz, both of Oakville, Jesus and Alberto Saenz, both of Three Rivers, and Victor Saenz of Pleasanton.

Mrs. Nina Jean (Chapin) DeLong, 81, of George West died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Live Oak Nursing Center. Visitation was held Monday at the Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West. The funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Irving officiating. Burial followed at the George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Reagan, N.S. McNeill, George Norris, Wayne Norris, Marshall Stautzenberger and Lawrence Perkins.
Mrs. DeLong was born April 29, 1921, to Hayes and Beulah (Greene) Chapin in Breckenridge. She married Cecil DeLong on May 2, 1946, in Jourdanton. She was a retired court clerk in district court and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Mrs. DeLong was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Cecil DeLong, on March 21, 2002.
Survivors include two sons, Gene C. (Dee Ann) DeLong of George West and Larry J. (Kelly) DeLong of Quanah; one brother, Hayes A. Chapin of Hilltop Lakes; four grandchildren, Marshall Stautzenberger, Nikki DeLong, Jacque DeLong and Rebakah DeLong; and numerous nieces and nephews.
