William Leon Keys, Jr.
William Leon Keys, Jr., 75, of Camp Wood,  Texas died July 30, 2005 at Cedar Hills Geriatic Center in Camp Wood.
He was born December 20, 1929 in Santa Rita, New Mexico to William Leon Keys, Sr. and Irene Francis Benson Keys.
He is preceded in death by one daughter Robin Keys.
Survivors are his daughter, Teresa Keys of Camp Wood,  Texas; step-son Kenneth Herlacher of Houston,  Texas; eight grandchildren: Sasha Olsen, Cody Williams, Kenneth Herlacher III, Brian Herlacher, Kasandra Herlacher, Anthony Reyna, Christopher Reyna and Mandy Easter; sister Nancy Matthews of Homer, Alaska and brother Bud Keys of Yuma, Arizona.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, August 3, in the Nelson Funeral Home Chapel in Camp Wood.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Camp Wood EMS in care of the Camp Wood City Hall.
Cremation arrangements were by Nelson Funeral Home of Camp Wood.

Emma Sue Guthrie Findley
Emma Sue Guthrie Findley was born on March 15, 1919. She passed away April 4, 2006. Funeral services were April 8, under the direction of Gentry-Fife Funeral Home.
She came into this world in her grandmother’s home on North 10th in Junction. She later moved to that same address with her husband May 1 - Rachel Gallegos, Nadine Zamudio, Nitza Benavidez, Oscar Arredondo Jr., Carlos A. Balvantin, Wade Dunbar and Bertha Venegas; May 2 - Sierra Oines, Cheyenne Arispe, Juan Venegas and Javier Vanegas; May 3 - Tricia Fry, Daniel Guardiola, Ryan Adame, Bianca Vage, Juan Enriquez, and Lulo Hernandez; May 4 - Rachel Perez, Camille F. Hernandez and Fermin Venegas Sr.;Happy Anniversary: May 2 - Mr. & Mrs. Juan H. Patino; May 3 - E.T. and Billie J. Matthews;until his death when she entered the Hill Country Care Center. Her childhood was spent on a ranch between Junction and Rocksprings. She and Milton retired to the ranch owned by her Guthrie grandparents and lived there until 2000, when they moved to town. She loved living on the ranch and being out of doors.
She wanted very much for her children and grandchildren to love the ranch like she did, and they and their friends were always welcome there. She and Milton provided the grandchildren with a horse called Tigger and a go cart named the “Hot Tamale.” Both of these provided many hours of fun and many stories to be repeated.
Emma Sue graduated from Abilene Christian College in 1940, with a bachelor degree. Her first year of teaching was spent in Roby. She later moved to San Antonio, and she and Milton were married May 21, 1943. Her beloved Milton died April 7, 2005. They would have been married 62 years.
She taught high school English at Los Fresnos, Colorado City, Gatesville Boys School and Gatesville High School. While living in Gatesville, she attended Baylor University and received her Masters degree. In 1967, she began teaching freshman English at Abilene Christian College. She retired from there in 1984.
She was a “Super Woman” who did it all; family and career, before the feminist movement coined the phrase.
She was dearly loved by her children and their families.
Her surviving children are Jean Bryant and husband, Earl, of Junction, Jerry Findley and wife, Martha, of Boyd and LaJuana Findley Peeples and husband, Pat, of Austin. Evelyn Findley died 10 days after birth in 1954.
Her grandchildren and two great-grandchildren are Chris Harrison of Michigan, David and Janice Findley and Zoe and Ben of Frisco, Heather and Wallid Obeid of Forth Worth, Chris Findley of Frisco, Spencer and Megan Peeples of Austin and Amanda Peeples of Abilene, Jeffrey Bryant and Kendyl Bryant of Farmington, Michigan.
She is also survived by her sisters, Dean Stewart and her husband, Lloyd, and Samoa Pepper along with their children: Irmadean and Buddy Martin, Sherry and Henry Lewis Welge, Monica and Paul Milton, Mike and Cindy Stewart, Yvonne and Jim Newark, Sharon and Andy Stark, Pam and Brian Kilmain, Darlene and Frank Loza, and nephew, Earl Price. Her brother, Perry Guthrie, died on September 23, 2005. She is survived by many great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Modesta Verdusco Samora
Completed her earthly journey of 76 years on Monday, April 17, 2006. She was born in Uvalde,  Texas, on November 4, 1929.
She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Luz Verdusco Samora and Felipe Samora and loving siblings, Virginia Samora Ramirez, Maria Inez Samora Ruiz, Manuela Samora Hernandez and Magdalena Samora Palacio.
She is survived by her daughters, Nora Samora Ruiz and Josephine Samora and husband, Larry Paiz; grandchildren, Adrian Ruiz and wife, Christina, Trisha Ruiz and Diego Coronado; great-grandchildren Steven, Shawn and Brianna Ruiz; one brother Eloy Samora; one sister Genoveva Samora Van Winkle and many loving nieces and nephews and her loving puppy, Peanut.
Services are Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. with interment in Rocksprings Cemetery. Father Ken Dakin will officiate.
Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Home of Rocksprings,  Texas.

Rosa Maria Hidalgo-Hernandez
Rosa Maria Hidalgo-Hernandez, 52, of Rocksprings,  Texas went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 14, 2007. She was born October 21, 1955 in Uvalde,  Texas to Gaudencio and Lucinda Hidalgo.
Rosa was one of nine brothers and sisters. She was the proud mother of Robert, Caroline, Erby, Amaro, Oscar and Gandy Hernandez and the ever-loving grandmother to Alicia, Leandra, Joseph, Matthew, Nikolas and Jonas. Other survivors include an aunt and great-aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Everyone knew her for her fun-loving free-spirit, giving nature and honest but open mind. Her wit would always catch you off guard, but her smile would melt your heart. She will forever be remembered for her enduring strength and her magnanimous character. Although her time to pass came all too quickly, she will forever be in our hearts and prayers, We thank God for the gift of our Rosa and the time we all shared with her.
Rosa was preceded in death by her sister Manuela “Nellie” Hidalgo-Vasquez.
Services were held Saturday, November 17, 2007 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Camp Wood,  Texas.
Arrangements were under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home of Camp Wood,  Texas.

George Douglas Miles
George Douglas Miles, 67, of Vance,  Texas died November 10, 2007 at his home in Vance. He was born July 26, 1940 in Spokane,  Washington to Earle and Suzanne Curtis Miles.
George was married to Doris Elizabeth Miles for 41 years. They moved from San Antonio to Nueces Canyon in 1971 and George was the foreman of the Hackberry Ranch for 12 years before he became a  Texas Government trapper in 1983. George retired from trapping in 1999. He was active for many years with the Nueces Canyon EMS and the Nueces Canyon School Board.
George was preceded in death by his son Aaron Miles; brother Teddy Miles and his parents Earle and Suzanne Miles.
He is survived by his loving wife Doris Elizabeth Miles of Vance; sons: Mark Miles of Muldoon,  Texas and Nathan Miles stationed in Korea; sisters: Sue Dyson and Jean Slagle; brothers: Kurt, Lee and Richard Miles along with grandchildren Trent and Alexis Miles.
George will be missed by his family and many friends in the community.
Services were held Friday, November 16, 2007 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Camp Wood,  Texas. Father John Fiala officated and burial was in the Miles Family Cemetery in Vance. military Honors were provided by the United States Marine Corp.
Arrangements were under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home of Camp Wood,  Texas.

William Iryl ‘Ott’ New
William Iryl ‘Ott’ New, 92, of Camp Wood died October 25, 2007, at Cedar Hills Geriatric Center in Camp Wood.
He was born January 29, 1915, in Camp Verde,  Texas, to Jacob Jake Joseph and Lena Elizabeth Ham New. He married Cloma G. Merritt.
New was proud to have served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Floyd New, Eual New and Clayton New; and five sisters, Ola Thompson, Ilda Merritt, Elva Mills, Lilian Reed and Fay Sietz.
New is survived by his wife of 60 years; one daughter, Debra New Brown and husband, Jimmy, of Camp Wood; two sons, Stanley Michael New of Camp Wood and Bill New and wife, Wanda, of San Antonio; seven grandchildren, Tray New and wife, Nita, of San Antonio, Kaid New and wife, Christianna, of Comfort, Tully Brown of Camp Wood, Casey Wardlaw and husband, Dutch, of Del Rio, Dobie New and wife, Ashley, of Liberty Hill, Colt New of Tomball and Dakota New of Liberty Hill; seven great-grandchildren, Uriah, Mackenzie and Micah New of San Antonio, Serenity and Luke Brand New of Comfort, and Cuatro and Cinco Wardlaw of Del Rio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held October 29th at the First Baptist Church in Barksdale.
Interment followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Camp Wood.
The Rev. Greg  Johnson officiated.
Pallbearers were Tray New, Kaid New, Tully Brown, Dobie New, Dutch Wardlaw and Colt New.
Honorary pallbearers were Dakota New and Casey Wardlaw.

Halley Allison
Halley Allison, known to friends and family as “Babs”, passed away quietly in her sleep on October 25, 2007. She was 86.
Born in Ballinger,  Texas on March 01, 1921 to David and Fannie Epperson Eaton, she later moved to Decatur,  Texas. Upon graduation from Decatur High School in 1939, Babs pursued higher learning at Decatur Baptist College prior to graduating from  Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
Babs was a keen observer of the natural beauty found in Nature and used her teaching skills to introduce others to the world of art, which she so dearly loved. For 17 years, she taught art in the Pampa,  Texas school system. In 1960, she married Lee F. Allison of Rocksprings and became his ranching partner and helpmate. She was an active member of the Rocksprings United Methodist Church and served for many years as a Cub Scout leader and all-around mom for her son, Will, his many friends, and her eight nephews. Babs later enjoyed the role of being grandmother to her beloved granddaughters Hanna and Serena Lee Allison.
Even as health problems became more of an issue in later years, Babs continued to teach others lessons by example. Her faithfulness to family and friends, as well as her belief in God never wavered. Others noted her quiet courage and determination and were encouraged.
Babs was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, her two brothers, and three of her sisters. Her surviving sister, Gene Holt, resides in Cody, Wyoming. Babs will be missed by her family and friends and the many people whose lives she touched.
A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church of Sonora, followed by a graveside service in Rocksprings on Sunday, October 28. The family greatly appreciates the love shown them during this difficult time and requests that friends wishing to make donations in memory of Babs send them to the Rocksprings Cemetery Association, Box 462, Rocksprings,  Texas 78880, or to a worthy charity.

Word Bell Sherrill
Word Bell Sherrill, 92, of San Antonio, former longtime resident of Uvalde, died Oct. 21, 2007, in San Antonio.
Sherrill was born April 4, 1915, in Rocksprings to a pioneer ranch family, Walter Word and Mary Bell Sherrill.
He graduated from high school at the age of 16 and worked his way through  Texas A&M, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, and received a commission in the United States Army as lieutenant.
His first job after the military was as county agent in Sonora, where he met and married Joyce McGilvray.
They were married 68 years before she died in 2005.
They moved to San Angelo, and then to Uvalde in 1938, where Sherrill continued his work as a county agent.
He quit work as an agent to ranch full time. His third career, as a Ranch Broker Realtor, began in the 1970s. Sherrill kept an office and worked every day until age 90.
Many of his civic activities were associated with agriculture. He was superintendent of the Uvalde County Livestock Show for over 30 years. He was a member and director of the  Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and a member of  Texas Cattle Raisers. Sherrill was an ardent conservationist. His curiosity and love of the land and its resources were an important part of his ranching life.
He is survived by one son, Word Sherrill and wife, Patty, of Boerne; two daughters, Martha Eakin and husband, Jimmy, of Hondo and Linda Sherrill Watts of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Parker officiating.
Arrangements were by Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary of Uvalde.

Ramon "Pache" G. Perez
August 20, 1950 - January 21, 2010
Ramon G. “Pache” Perez of Uvalde passed away on January 21, 2010 in Amistad Nursing Home at the age of 59. He was born on August 20, 1950 in Batesville,  Texas to Reymundo and Maria Perez. He is survived by seven sisters; Alma Diaz and husband, Beco, Linda Capuchin and husband, Larry; Rosie Longoria and husband, John; Birdie Garcia and husband; Gilbert Jr., Lydia Cruz and husband; Adam Jr., and Sylvia Ann Perez all of Uvalde,  Texas; Emma Cano and husband; Ramiro T. of Kerrville,  Texas; one brother; Raymundo Perez Jr. of Uvalde,  Texas; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Evangelina Perez. A rosary will be held on Thursday and Friday at 7:00 PM at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robbie Rosales, Beco Diaz, Raymundo Perez III, Eric Musquiz, Anthony Talamantez, Donny (Adam) Cruz III, and Ramiro Cano Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Polanco, Eduardo Hernandez III, Shaq Longoria, and Tiffany Garcia.

Rosa Garcia Gomez
August 30, 1918 - January 21, 2010
Rosa Garcia Gomez of Uvalde passed away on January 21, 2010 at her residence at the age of 91. She was born on August 30, 1918 in Terrell,  Texas to Victoriano and Asencion Garcia. She is survived by three daughters; Veronica Annabel Gomez of Uvalde,  Texas; Amparo Isaac and husband, James of Beeville,  Texas; and Crusita Rodriguez of San Angelo,  Texas; two sons; Armando Gomez and wife, Esther of Wisconsin; Tomas Gomez and wife, Dora of San Antonio,  Texas; two sisters; Maria Gonzales of Uvalde,  Texas; Margarita Garcia of Piedras Negras; two brothers; Jose Garcia of San Angelo; Benin Garcia of Crane,  Texas; thirteen grandchildren; daughter-in-law; Alicia Gomez. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jose Salvador Gomez; and grandson, Armando Gomez Jr. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.
