Buerger
Robert Wilson Buerger, 73, died Sunday, March 9, 2003.
Visitation was held Tuesday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel. Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at the same location, with the Rev. John Fluth officiating. Special music included “Just As I Am” and “Old Rugged Cross,” with organist Mary Ellen Thoms. Burial followed in the Papalote Protestant Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ken Brown, Jim Kirk, Hardy Collier, Geoff MacDonald, Jimmy Boullard and Robert Jr., “Tut” and John Scott Buerger. Honorary pallbearer was Vernon Ludwig.
Mr. Buerger was born on May 29, 1929, in Gonzales to Hughes Lee and Mary Elizabeth (Owens) Buerger. He served in the Air Force for 20 years before his retirement. He married Betty Jean Risner in 1950 in California. He resided in Papalote and was the owner of German Auto Parts. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and volunteered with the Papalote Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Jean Buerger; a sister, Mary Jean Witten; and two brothers, Hughes Lee and T.C. Buerger.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ann Gebhard and Nancy MacDonald, both of Papalote; a son, Robert Wilson Buerger Jr. of Papalote; a brother, Breymann “Tut” Buerger of Skidmore; two sisters, Edith Lou “Potsy” Gottard of North Carolina and Annie Laurie Kunetka of Temple; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Hammons
Freda Juenger Hammons, 99, died Saturday, March 8, 2003.
Visitation was held Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel. Rosary was recited that evening at 7 o’clock at the same location. Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with Father Patrick Donohoe officiating. Special music included “Ave Maria,” with organist Sister Julie Macaraeg. Burial followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus served as pallbearers.
Mrs. Hammons was born in Beeville on Jan. 16, 1904, to Anton and Marie (Michalek) Juenger. She was a retired teacher and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and an honorary member of the Altar Society.
Mrs. Hammons attended Poesta School and completed her education at St. Mary’s Academy. She earned a diploma from the University of Texas and was an English teacher and librarian in Fredericksburg. She transferred her interests to a gift shop that she operated for 30 years, Freda’s Gift Shop. She was a member of Zonta International and the Music Study Club, the Historical Society and Gemischter Saenger Chor. She was president of the Legion of Mary and was active in Catholic Daughters of America. She was active in the American Association of University Women, Beeville Garden Club and Beeville Art Association.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Boenig of Richmond, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hardgrave
Walter F. Hardgrave, 86, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Chase County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Cottonwood Falls, Kan.
A former resident of Beeville, Mr. Hardgrave taught for a short time at Bee County College.
A celebration of his life was held Feb. 10 in the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rick Smith of First Baptist Church of Cottonwood Falls officiating. Cremation followed the service.
Mr. Hardgrave was born on July 20, 1916, in Dalhart to Walter (Harry) and Frances (Atkinson) Hardgave. He married Della Ellen Ake on Aug. 16, 1941, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was a registered professional electrical engineer and spent a good part of his career in the aerospace industry making significant contributions to proximity fuses during World War II and missile guidance systems during the space race.
He was employed by Sandia Corporation and LTV Aeronautics Division. He worked at General Electric, where he helped develop the first radar tube. He was a professor in the physics department and taught in the electrical engineering department at the University of New Mexico.
Survivors include his wife, Della; a son, Terry Hardgrave of Bethesda, Md.; two daughters, Judie Windler of Clearfield, Utah, and Cynthia Downs of Dallas; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials to the Chase County Senior Center may be sent in care of the funeral home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, Kan. 66845.

Lytle
Ida Louise Lytle, 82, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, in Alice.
She was born in Beeville on Jan. 5, 1921, to Lovest August and Ida Willie Hinderman. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class at Lott-Canada. She was married to Cleo Lytle on Dec. 7, 1939, and they had three children. Mrs. Lytle was a past member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Beeville, in which she was active as a member of the Women’s Circle and Mission Society. When the family moved to Alice, she became a member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church and was active in Bible school and supported special church functions.
Mrs. Lytle enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing, crochet and collecting coupons, which she gave away to friends and family. She always took an interest in her community wherever she lived, participating in and bringing attention to any improvements that she deemed were needed.
She was a former president of the Carver Elementary School PTA, Booster Club volunteer, Camp Fire Girls guardian, room mother and chairman of the Southside Crusade for the American Cancer Society for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lovest and Ida Willie; three brothers, Lovest,Harold and Calvin; and two sisters, Mary Alice and Beatrice (Beadie).
Mrs. Lytle is survived by her husband, Cleo Lytle; three daughters, Evelyn (Earvin) Taylor, Patricia (Frank) Hosey and Terri Lytle; four grandchildren, Eric Q. (June) Taylor, Chris A. Lytle, Pamela L. Hosey, Monica N. (Bradley) Parkzes; one great-grandson, Jacob Taylor; two sisters, Nellie J. (Bill) McLeod and Gayola Adams; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home chapel in Alice. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at the True Light Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Collins Cemetery.

Peña
Elida “Leli” G. Peña, 62, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Fort Worth.
Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Chapel. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Keller. Burial followed in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Peña was born on Feb. 6, 1941, in George West to Jose B. and Carolina Gonzales. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Cathedral for 35 years and a member of the Altar Society. She owned and operated her own business for more than 10 years.
She was preceded in death by Stella Rene Peña and a brother.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Ray Peña; a daughter, Sandra (Frank) Peña-Hernandez of Fort Worth; four sons, Ruben Peña and Richard Peña, both of Fort Worth, Oscar (Angela) Peña of San Antonio and Robert Peña of Corpus Christi; two granddaughters, Stormi Layne Hernandez and Sidney Renee Hernandez of Fort Worth; a grandson, Nicholas Peña and Jennifer; three sisters, Gloria Gonzales, Elda Gonzales and Elvira Ybañez; and four brothers, Benny Gonzales, Soilo Gonzales, Abline Gonzales and Raul Gonzales.

Lula Mae Fridge Young, 103, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003.
Visitation was to be held Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel. Funeral services will be held today (Saturday) at the same location at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Bill Duke officiating. Special music will include “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Young was born on May 2, 1900, in Guy (Fort Bend County), Texas, to John Thomas and Fannie Virginia (Watson) Fridge. She married Warren E. Young on Aug. 31, 1919, in Beeville. She resided most of her life in Beeville, working at the family business, Young Auto Company. She also lived in Midland for eight years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Beeville and was the oldest living member. She was involved in many church activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren E. Young, in 1973; her parents; five brothers; one sister; and a daughter, Inah Mae Ritz.
Survivors include two sons, John Young and wife Margaret of Midland and E.W. Young and wife Rosalie of Beeville; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Arrisola
Petra Diaz Arrisola, 87 died Sunday, November 9, 2003. Rosary was recited by Deacon Manuel Carranco Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Burial was held at Arrisola Ranch Cemetery in Mineral.
Pallbearers were Carlos Cantu, Carlos Rodriguez, Albert Diaz, Matthew Arrisola Jr., Christy Gomez, Joe A. Rodriguez, and Felix Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren, Monica R. Martinez, Vanessa Rodriguez, Angelica Maria Rodriguez, Brenda Arrisola, Joe Arrisola Jr. and Jeremy Arrisola.
Mrs. Arrisola was born on January 1, 1916 in Mineral to Alejos and Vicenta (Hernandez) Diaz. She married Pablo Arrisola on May 19, 1941 in Bee County. She resided in Beeville and was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and was a Homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 61 years, three brothers, Rodrigo Diaz, Zacarias Diaz and Pedro Diaz; one sister Dolores De La Rosa.
Survivors includes two sons, Matthew Arrisola of Beeville and Joe Arrisola of Grand Prairie; twin daughters, Maria Luisa Arrisola and Maria Elena Rodriguez both of Beeville; two brothers, Cruz Diaz of Corpus Christi and Jose Diaz, his wife Adela of Ennis; one sister, San Juana Nunez of Houston; eight grandchildren, Brenda, Monica, Jeremy, Vanessa, Angelica, Joe, Jr., Felix and Matthew, Jr.; five great-grandchildren Christy, Christopher, Crystal, Ashley and Adian.

Barrera
Frank “Pancho” Barrera, 65, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville, following a sudden illness.
Rosary will be recited this evening (Wednesday) at Treviño Funeral Home at 7 o’clock. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery No. 2.
Mr. Barrera was born on Jan. 29, 1938, to Fernando Sr. and Matiana (Perales) Barrera in Beeville. He was a lifelong resident of Beeville and a construction worker. He was a member of the Catholic church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died on June 24, 2001, his parents, a sister, Virginia Villarreal, and two brothers, Jimmy and Ramon Barrera, and one grandson, John Ernest Alvarado Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Martina (John R. Loya) Barrera; a son, Ernest (Darla) Barrera; two stepsons, Robert and Luis Arredondo; three stepdaughters, Della (Larry Benavidez) Arredondo, Terri (Ray) Ortiz and Alicia (David) Villagran; a sister, Rafaela Gonzales, all of Beeville; four brothers, Ernesto and Baldemar Barrera, both of Houston, and Fernando and Rudy Barrera, both of Beeville; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Virginia Longoria Garcia, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, in Huntsville, Ala.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Skidmore, with Father Paul Rajareegam officiating. Burial followed in Skidmore’s Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Skidmore on March 22, 1920, to George and Rafaela Longoria. She had resided in Alabama for the past four years, moving there from Skidmore. She was a housewife and a Catholic.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, Elvira Serna, Carolina Garcia, Irene Longoria, Micaela Perez and Oralia Vasques, and a brother, Emilio Longoria.
Survivors include a daughter, Irma (Severo) Contreras of Madison, Ala.; a son, Johnny (Ofelia) Garcia of Huntsville, Ala.; two sisters, Guadalupe Amador of Skidmore and Ofelia (Jesse) Aranda of Corpus Christi; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Harris
Morris Ray Harris Sr., 83, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003.
Visitation will be held Thursday at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sinton. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville.
Mr. Harris was born on Nov. 15, 1919, in Mineral to the late Rufus Calvin Harris and Pearl Stroman Harris. He graduated from Pettus High School, attended Schreiner Institute and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1941. After working for CPA firms in Tyler and Corpus Christi, he became associated with Goldston & Harris, Inc., a marine construction firm in Corpus Christi and served as president until the firm was sold in 1944. Commissioned an ensign in the Navy in May 1944, he served in the South Pacific and Aleutian islands and was discharged in Seattle, Wash., in March 1946. After the war, he and his family moved to George West where he went into the sand and gravel business with his brother, Stroman. He became a certified public accountant and started a CPA firm which became known as Harris, Havins & Company.
After serving eight years as county auditor in Live Oak County, Mr. Harris became the San Patricio County auditor in 1959, serving until his retirement in 1984. He was active in the Texas Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs, where he was awarded a 50-year honorary membership in 2002. He also served as president of the Texas Association of County Auditors in 1980 and 1981, and was instrumental in setting up the Standardized Accounting System used in Texas counties today.
Mr. Harris was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sinton and the Sinton Rotary Club. He was a member of the San Patricio County Airport Board and served as president of the Sinton Municipal Golf Association from 1983 through 1985. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman, especially enjoying visits with his family at the Harris Ranch on the Nueces River.
Survivors include his wife, Joye Thomas Harris; his sons, Ray (Jan) Harris Jr. of Olney, John C. (Betty) Harris of Austin, James E. (Terry) Harris of Sugar Land and Richard C. (Kathleen) Harris of Houston; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
