Annie Mae, or "Sister" as she was called, was born June 6, 1910 in Camp Verde, TX. She had one brother, Jack, and was the eldest of six daughters born to the eastern Kerr County Pioneer family of Del and Clara Dugosh Reeves. She grew up on the family farm located on Upper Verde Creek where she attended Blackett School, a one room schoolhouse. She also attended school in Camp Verde and Kerrville’s Tivy High School. She returned to Camp Verde where she enjoyed working at the Camp Verde General Store for several years.

On May 15, 1937, she married Prentice Witt of Center Point. They were married in San Antonio, TX by a family friend and minister. They bought a farm outside of Center Point where she worked side by side with her husband. To this marriage four children were born, Gerald, Gloria, Joe Dell and Kathy. After Prentice’s death in 1964, she continued to work and live on the farm. She cherished her 62 years there.

Upon accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior at the First Baptist Church in Center Point, she and Prentice were baptized on October 15, 1951 in the pond on Skyline Drive. She passionately accepted her call as a humble servant by teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and was a long time participant in the Women’s Missionary Union. Lifelong friendships established in the church were a special blessing to her that continued throughout her life.

Active in the community, she was a supportive member and officer in the PTA. She was a sponsor and faithful fan of the band and athletic programs all the years her children and grandchildren attended Center Point High School. As a member of Kerr County Extension Homemakers for over forty years and the Center Point Garden Club, she enjoyed being an officer and hosting meetings in her home.

As a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she poured love into quilting, crocheting, baking cookies and tending to her flowers. Whether the children roamed the hill, played at the water trough, worked puzzles or played games with her, each visit was special.

When declining health made it necessary to leave the farm, she moved to an apartment in Kerrville where she still enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. The last few months of her life were spent under the loving care of the nurses and staff at Hilltop Village.

Fred Woodell
Born in Ft. Worth, TX on March 7, 1916
Departed on November 3, 2003, and resided in Kerrville, TX.

Service Date: November 7, 2003
Service Location: Grimes Funeral Chapels

Fred Woodell, who was born to Albert Frederick and Beaulah Keith Woodell in Fort Worth,  Texas, on March 7, 1916, passed away Monday, November 3, 2003, in a Kerrville hospital. He attended Center Point Schools until his junior year. He came to Kerrville where he boarded with Mrs. Forrest Salter, the owner and publisher of the Kerrville Mountain Suns Newspaper, graduating from Tivy High School in 1934, at the top of his class as an outstanding student. He was one of the first sports players to receive a letter jacket in both football and track. After high school graduation, Fred attended  Texas Tech on a football scholarship.

After a year of college, Fred started riding the rails as a hobo. After two years of this adventure, he decided that he needed to have a purpose in life, more than jumping trains and wondering where his next meal was coming from–at least more than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Fred jumped off his last rail car as it traveled over the Colorado River at Austin,  Texas and he hitched a ride to Dallas. His next step in life was working as a gun smith at Davis Gun Works. It was there where Fred met and worked on Bonnie and Clyde’s machine gun–a day or two before the big shoot out and their demise.

In the early 1940's, Fred and his brother Toddy Leon Woodell formed a business called W & W Machine Works. After the death of his brother, Fred went onto manufacturing and formed a company called Rotex Soverign Instruments in Dallas. Rotex designed and manufactured the power tools for Sears, called the Craftsman. After more than 28 years he sold this company to Black & Decker. After leaving the contract of Sears, the company manufactured electric erasers used by drafting professionals which are still being made in the Dallas plant. During the years of manufacturing he also made shotgun reloaders called the Texan.

During World War II, Mr Woodell was commissioned by the government to manufacture machine guns, which he tested at the plant and parts for airplanes. He also held a commission as an officer.

Fred was an avid pistol shooter and participated in the Nationals and held the top title for pistol competition for several years in the handicap division.

He was of Christian faith and was baptized in the Guadalupe River, behind the Blue Bonnet Hotel during a summer revival when he was a child of twelve.

On December 27, 1962, he married Bonnie Vaughan Woodell in Guadalajara, Mexico. They purchased property on the Guadalupe River in Center Point. The Woodells had their home built and lived their until the later 1971 when they moved into the Kerrville area and purchased a ranch on Goat Creek Road, called the Cabrabra. Mr. Woodell enjoyed being a gentleman rancher and kept the ranch for almost 30 years, when it was recently sold. He enjoyed all the little animals from grasshoppers to the biggest whitetail. He moved back into Kerrville with his wife Bonnie and his three little buddies, Samantha, a Boston Terrier, Daisey, a Snazzer and Booker "T", his newest Boston. Friends will miss seeing his little blue car headed west with his buddies which was a daily adventure until his last trip on Sunday, November 2, 2003. Mr. Woodell was a reader, writer of great works and loved the arts and fine music. Some of his letters will always be cherished for those who were lucky enough to receive one as they were masterpieces of wisdom and love of life.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie Woodell of Kerrville; Son, Fred Woodell and wife Nancy of Dallas; Daughters, Sharon Ann Lord and husband Dennis Lord of Red Oak, Patricia Frazier and husband Nevill of Dallas; Melinda Woodell of Taos, New Mexico and Sandra Rekwood of  Washington State; sister, Bettijo Palmer and husband Bill Palmer of Dallas; two extended family daughters, Susan Searcy of Tow and Karen Rogers Marion of Kerrville. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren survive their loving grandpa Fred. He is also survived by many loving employees in the Rotex Company, still operating in Dallas. He also leaves his constant companions Samantha, Daisey and Booker T and his favorite cats, Joe Mike and Tommy Tucker. Bedtime will never be the same for these loving animals. He will be missed by each of us who had the joy and pleasure of knowing this quiet and sweet man. He was preceded in death by a son Brooke Woodell; brother Toddy Leon Woodell and sister Beryl McCoy.

Funeral services honoring the life of Fred Woodell will be at 11:00 a. m. Friday, November 7, 2003, at Grimes Funeral Chapels, with Rev. Charlie Burgin, Officiating. Interment to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
