Souli James "Tooter" Shanklin
Born in San Antonio, TX on January 6, 1935

Souli James Shanklin, better known as Tooter, passed away July 16, 2004 at his ranch home with his family with him. Tooter was a lifetime rancher and a descendent of the pioneer Shanklin ranching family who came to  Texas before 1850. His great-great-grandfather, Gordon Shanklin (1799-1888) settled on the Lampasas River near Belton. His great-grandfather, Samuel James Shanklin, Sr. (1827-1901) ranched in Lampasas and Goliad Counties. His grandfather, Samuel James Shanklin, Jr. (1863-1956) came to Edwards County as a teenager with his brother-in-law, M.M. Bradford. He ranched on the South Llano and then bought land in 1905 ten miles northwest of Rocksprings. His father, Souli Samuel Shanklin (1899-1975), bought adjoining land in 1927.
Tooter was born January 6, 1935, in the Nix Hospital in San Antonio,  Texas. His parents were Souli Samuel and Alice Hampton Thompson Shanklin. Tooter graduated from Rocksprings High School,  Texas Tech University, and the United States Naval Officer Training School in Newport, Rhode Island. While at  Texas Tech, he received two letter jackets for being on the rodeo team. Tooter continued to rodeo while he was in the service and maintained a vital interest in rodeoing throughout his life.

On February 22, 1957, Tooter and Lillie Tomlinson were married at the ranch home of Lillie’s maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Talbot. Tooter was preceded in death by his parents and a half-sister Myrtie Gene Thompson Weatherford. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lillie; one daughter, Martha Alice Spraberry and her husband, Danny of Anson; two sons, Souli Asa Shanklin and wife, Patty, and Jake Roger Arthur Shanklin and his wife, Hillary of Rocksprings; seven grandchildren: Donna Kayln Spraberry of Roanoke, Travis Charles Spraberry and Jamie Rebecca Spraberry of Anson, Thomas Asa Shanklin, Souli Ryan Shanklin, Seth Taos Shanklin, and Tucker James Shanklin of Rocksprings.

Tooter was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church where he served as Trustee chairman. He served as president of the American Angora Goat Breeders Association. He was also active in the  Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association where he was an Honorary Director for life, and was a supporter of the West  Texas Boy’s Ranch and many 4-H and FFA activities in Rocksprings and across the state. He served on the advisory board for Pedernales Electric Cooperative, was a member of the Edwards County Fair Association, the Mohair Council of America, and the  Texas Mohair Producers Board.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 19, 2004, 4:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Rocksprings with the Rev. Nancy Littlefield officiating. Burial will be in the Rocksprings Cemetery. Tooter will be out for viewing at 10:00 a.m. on July 19, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Rocksprings until service time.

Pallbearers will be Keith Wallace, Johnny Whitworth, Todd Varga, Wylie Rudasill, Sid Evans, Trey Smart, Randy Clark and Sam Cowden.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Smith, George Donnell, Clay Evans, Sid Johnson, Jerry Springer, Glen Richardson, George Wallace, Joe David Ross, Vernon Dutton, Gene Graham, Douglas McNealy, Jack Harris, Bill Baker and Jimmy Rudasill.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to GRIMES FUNERAL CHAPELS of Kerrville.

Thomas P. Sharp
Born in New York City, NY on February 16, 1951
Departed on August 13, 2004, and resided in Kerrville, TX

Mr. Thomas Patrick Sharp, Age 53, of Kerrville,  Texas, died on Friday, August 13, 2004, in a Kerrville hospital. Thomas, a resident of Kerrville since 1982 and a prior resident of Hondo,  Texas, was born on February 16, 1951, in New York City, New York, to Jack Dan Sharp and Josephine Lorraine Schiffers Sharp. They preceded him in death.
He married Donna Breiten in Hondo,  Texas, in August 1973, where they lived until the family moved to Kerrville in 1982.

Tom had a 25 year career with Ford dealerships where he received numerous awards for excellence and outstanding achievement in service and parts management.

He was employed by James Avery Craftsman for five years before he was forced to retire due to illness.

Tom was instrumental in forming Cub Scout Troop 139, where he went on to serve as scoutmaster for several years. He was a lifetime member of NRA and was involved with the 4-H Rifle Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors, Wife, Mrs. Donna Sharp of Kerrville; daughter, Abby Christine Sharp of Kerrville; son, Joshua Thomas Sharp and wife Brandy Raina of Kerrville; aunt, Doris Koch of Conroe; two grandchildren,  Jackson Thomas Sharp and Autumn Christine Sharp; numerous cousins.

Memorial services, 4:00 P. M., Wednesday, August 18, 2004, Grimes Funeral Chapels.

Memorial remembrances may be made to Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, 710 Water, Kerrville,  Texas 78028.

Peter K. Shaver
Born in San Diego, CA on July 7, 1950
Departed on January17, 2004, and resided in Bandera, TX

Service Location: St. Stanislaus Catholic Church

Peter K. Shaver, age 53 of Bandera, died Sunday, January 17, 2004 at his residence. He was born July 7, 1950 in San Diego, CA to Robert Griffith Shaver and Patricia Kane Shaver. On January 27, 1977, he married Teresa Maynes in Balboa Canal Zone, Panama.

He was a retired Master Machinist and he was a local Antique Gun Dealer. In addition to his wife, Teresa of Bandera, survivors include his parents, Robert and Patricia Shaver of Falls Church, Virginia; daughter, Katie Shaver of Bandera; sons, Kane Shaver and Pete Shaver of Bandera; sister, Nancy Shaver of Denver, CO; and brother, Robbie Shaver of Watertown, MA.

A rosary will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2004, 7:00 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Bandera. Funeral mass will be Wednesday, January 21, 1:00 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, with Father Wojciech Reisch officiating. Interment will follow in the Bandera Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be George Maynes, Michael Maynes, Robert Shaver, Sean Murphy, Alex Murphy and Sean Bennett.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to GRIMES FUNERAL CHAPELS of Bandera.

Blanche Shepperd
Born in Mason County, TX on November 20, 1904
Departed on July 21, 2004, and resided in Kerrville, TX

Mrs. Blanche Shepperd, age 99, a resident of Kerrville since 1985, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at a local care center. She was a prior resident of Rocksprings, TX. Blanche was born November 20, 1904 in Mason County, TX to Silas and Lou (Harris) Turner. On November 20, 1922, she married Robert William Shepperd.
Mr. and Mrs. Shepperd operated Shepperd Dry Goods in Rocksprings for 27 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Rocksprings.

Survivors include daughter, Mrs. Ron "Lavonne" Coryell of Kerrville; grandchildren, Beverly Zummo of Houston, Robert Shepperd of Boise, ID and Janet Gesslin of Center Point; great grandchildren, Casey and Kevin Gesslin, both of Center Point.

She was preceded in death by husband, Robert William Shepperd, Sr. on May 1, 1976 and son, Robert William Shepperd, Jr. on September 18, 1984.

Services will be held Monday, July 26, 2004, 10:30 a.m., Grimes Funeral Chapels, officiated by Dr. Warren Hornung. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Rocksprings Cemetery, Rocksprings, TX.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to GRIMES FUNERAL CHAPELS of Kerrville.

Virginia Skillern
Born in Baldwin City, KS on September 27, 1919
Departed on September 14, 2003 and resided in Kerrville, TX.

Mrs. Virginia Skillern, age 83 of Kerrville, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2003 in a San Antonio hospital. She was born September 27, 1919 in Baldwin City, Kansas to Loren Milton and Edna Mae (Fleshman) Williams. She married Edwin Skillern in Denver, CO on June 17, 1986.

Virginia was a homemaker and a volunteer at the Air Space Museum in  Oklahoma City, OK. She was a member of the "SOON AIRES" in  Oklahoma City, OK and the Riverhill Women’s Golf Association and Riverhill’s Women’s Association.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Skillern of Kerrville; a daughter, Becky Greenwade of Huntsville, TX; and two step daughters, Karen Mackie of Baton Rouge, LA and Nancy Skillern of Ft. Worth; son, Greg V. Burton and wife Nancy of Grand Prairie, TX; sister, Lorene Smith of Long Boat Key, FL; three Step Grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday, September 18, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with Rev. F. William Mackie officiating. A private interment will follow.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 17, 2003, 4-6 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of GRIMES FUNERAL CHAPELS of Kerrville.

Don R. Slape, Sr.
Born in Fairfield, Ill. on June 12, 1940
Departed on August 16, 2003 and resided in Kerrville, TX.

Don R. Slape, Sr., of Kerrville, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2003. He was born June 12, 1940 in Fairfield, Ill. to Ethel and Don A. Slape, Sr.

He attended Georgia military Academy and served in the US Army. He was a driller for Don Slape Drilling Company and then moved to  Texas in 1972. He went to work at Holiday Corner and met his life long best friend, Jim Muck. He became District Manager for Circle K Stores of South  Texas. He also worked for Moore Services as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic. He became disabled and then retired.

Don is survived by wife, Winifred and four children, Trisha Love, Don Slape, Jr., Kelly Slape, and Shelly Danley; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and life long friend, which became his brother-in-law, Timothy Drew and son Tod Drew. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Services will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2003, 2:00 p.m., at Grimes Funeral Chapels with Father Carl Gockley. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Ashlock, Bret Love, Eddie Reyes, Mike Piper, Kevin Enderlin, and Victor Aguirre.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Hubble, Bud McCrary and Jim Muck.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of GRIMES FUNERAL CHAPELS of Kerrville.

Gail Anne Smelker
Born in Denver. CO on May 11, 1956
Departed on November 28, 2004, and resided in Ingram, TX

Gail Anne Smelker, age 48 of Ingram, passed away Sunday, November 28, 2004 at her residence. She was born May 11, 1956 in Denver, CO to Franklin and Helen (Torline) Smelker.
Gail served in the United States Navy and worked for the Department of the Interior. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Harper.

Survivors include fiancé, Dave Lemmon of Ingram; daughters, Christina Lynn Sandoval of California and Cathleen Patrice Sandoval of Center Point; brothers, Bob, Mark and Tony Smelker, all of Colorado; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sandoval.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Thursday, December 2, 2004, 6:00 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with Deacon Curtis Klein officiating.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 3, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harper, with Father John Fiala as celebrant.

Burial will be Monday, December 6, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at the Calvary Cemetery in Stratton, CO.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SIDS Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to GRIMES FUNERAL CHAPELS of Kerrville.

Dorothy J. Smith

Dorothy J. Smith, age 71, of Pipe Creek, passed away Friday, March 2, 2007 in a San Antonio Hospital. She was born on November 11, 1935 in Monticello, Illinois to Everett O. And Mary A. Settles Bledsoe. On May 29, 1964 she married William Stephen Smith in San Antonio. Dorothy was a dedicated mother and grandmother and loved her family very much. She was also a dedicated member and very active in the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband William Smith of Pipe Creek, children, Paul T. Watson, Carol Ann Saldana, Cynthia R. Blandford & Husband Ben, and Thomas Lee Smith; grandchildren, Brandon Blandford, Benjamin Ed Blandford, Ashlea Blandford, Mirella Saldana, Christian Saldana, and Zoie Camille Saldana great grandchild, Keely Faith Blandford. She is also survived by nephews Westley Bledsoe Jr., Jerry Bledsoe, James Smith and Larry Smith, and nieces, Kathy Beinek and Holly Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at 2 PM at Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church with Reverends Raymond and Becky Powell officiating.

George F. "G.F." Smith
Born on June 26, 1923 in Soper, OK

George F. "G.F." Smith, age 84 of Kerrville, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008 at his residence. He was born June 26, 1923 in Soper, OK to Claude and Delphia (Baughier) Smith. On June 28, 1947, he married Clarene Knox in Kerrville.
Mr. Smith served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked as a switchman at Kerrville Telephone Company for 40 years. He was a member of the Baptist Faith and had served as a deacon in the Baptist Church and was a member of the Kerrville Masonic Lodge #697 A.F. & A.M.

Survivors include wife, Clarene Smith of Kerrville; daughter, Sheree Love of Kerrville; sons, Randy Smith of Kerrville and Richard Smith of Grapevine; daughter in law, Bettie Smith of Wimberley; sisters, Emma Gene Norwood and Audrey Zumwalt, both of Kerrville; grandchildren, Shawn Toth and wife, Becky, Amanda Emshoff and husband, Michael, Rebecca Love, James Love and wife, Tabitha and Cara Smith; great grandchildren, Mitchell Toth, Emily Toth, Brinton Hockenberry and Charlie Love.

His son, Ronald Smith, his brothers, Raymond, Winford and James Smith and his sister, Joy Builta preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 8, 2008, 5-7 PM at Grimes Funeral Chapels.

Services will be held Monday, June 9, 2008, 10 AM at Grimes Funeral Chapels under the auspices of the Kerrville Masonic Lodge #697 A.F. & A.M. and officiated by Rev. Bill Moseley. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Mountain Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Special Opportunity Center, 200 Francisco Lemos, Kerrville, TX 78028, Peterson Hospice, 1121 Broadway, Kerrville, TX 78028 or to a charity of one’s choice.
